    We’re hiring an Assistant Director of Retail to Live. Work. Explore. in Columbia Falls, Montana!

    Job Summary:
    Help lead the daily operations of a diverse mix of retail locations in Glacier National Park—including gift shops, general stores, a coffee shop, and a quick-service food outlet. You'll also support operations at our distribution center in Columbia Falls. This role touches every part of the retail experience, from training and merchandising to inventory management, data entry, employee relations, and contract compliance. Flexibility is key, especially during the busy summer season, which includes regular travel throughout the Park and occasional overnight stays.

    The Details:
    Position Type: Full-time, year-round with an 8-week furlough period in late-November/mid-January each year

    Pay: $2,420 bi-weekly

    Responsibilities

    • Support the hiring of supervisory and management positions across all store locations.

    • Help develop staffing guides, review management structures, and create succession plans where possible.

    • Contribute to performance evaluations for store managers.

    • Mentor store leadership to support their professional development.

    • Coordinate the development and implementation of training programs covering guest hospitality, product knowledge, food safety, responsible alcohol sales, retail systems, best business practices, and workplace safety.

    • Provide training and ongoing support to the Retail Administrator.

    • Oversee day-to-day store operations, including setup, scheduling, inventory, and troubleshooting.

    • Partner with store managers and staff to meet all contractual requirements of the NPS Concessions Agreement, ensuring timeliness of initiatives and reporting.

    • Work with the Distribution Center Manager and store managers to ensure timely product shipments, accurate inventory levels, and effective merchandise presentation.

    • Collaborate on establishing operational policies and priorities with the Distribution Center Manager.

    • Execute retail product placement and planogram strategies with a focus on operations, inventory, and visual appeal.

    • Maintain inventory accuracy through periodic audits and contribute to loss prevention planning.

    • Coordinate department meetings, vendor visits, trainings, and other retail functions.

    • Resolve guest and employee issues in accordance with Xanterra policies.

    • Other duties as assigned.


    Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Strong coaching and employee development skills
    • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision; excellent attendance, punctuality, and a proactive management style
    • Skilled in developing and leading management teams, with a focus on analyzing sales and labor budgets, POS reports, inventory, staff performance, and sales techniques
    • Ability to foster a collaborative environment and effectively lead a diverse seasonal workforce
    • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with guests, department management, and retail staff.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, along with problem-solving abilities.
    • Strong financial and analytical skills.
    • Must be able to pass both a ServSafe Food certification and a certified alcohol training program to train staff.
    • Valid driver's license and ability to operate company vehicles in seasonal mountain conditions

    Experience:

    • Minimum 2+ years of retail management experience in a high-volume, seasonal environment.
    • Resort or tourist retail experience, merchandising, or buying would be a plus.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, POS systems, and other hospitality software.
    • Bachelor's degree in Business, Retail, Hospitality, or a related field is preferred, but not required. Equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.

    Supervisory Responsibility:

    • Oversee seasonal management positions

    Physical Requirements include:

    • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and drive for long periods of time.
    • Must be able to lift, carry, and load maximum 50lbs.
    • Must be able to push wheel carts with load capacity of 300lbs.
    • Frequent lifting and carrying of supplies, boxes, bags, bundles of firewood and ice.
    • Frequent trips up and down steep narrow stairs.
    • Must be able to bend, kneel, stretch, and reach for extended periods of time.

    Responsibilities

    • May be assigned as Host, Food Runner, or Table Maintenance positions. All roles require employees to provide exceptional guest service, superior teamwork with your co-workers, and be responsive to the direction of your floor manager. The ideal candidate must be flexible to work in all areas of the role.
      • Host:
        • Greet, organize, and communicate with guests assigning them a wait-time and providing a guest pager.
        • Control the flow of guests into the dining room to enhance their experience and assure the kitchen and service staff achieve the expected service standards.
      • Food Runner:
        • Organize, garnish, tray and transport the menu items and beverages promptly to guests.
      • Table Maintenance:
        • Interact with guests to assess their needs, set cleared tables with the appropriate tableware and glasses, clear occupied tables of extra equipment and used plates, and respond immediately to any needs expressed by the section server and/or the guest.
    • Maintain cleanliness of Dining Room/Lounge and service areas, including the buffet; and maintain organized and fully stocked server stations within the Dining Room/Lounge.
    • Serve and re-fill water to guests; clear and set tables in accordance with all sanitation and service standards; assist servers as requested and transport dirty tableware from the Dining Room to the dish drop area.
    • Aid in organizing, moving, connecting, and disconnecting draft beer kegs.
    • Follow Xanterra and NPS environmental practices, safety practices, and policies and procedures.
    • Assist in other departments or with other job duties as requested or necessary in line with the overall success of the outlet, location, and company.

    Qualifications

    • Must have a working knowledge of all menus: Specials, features, food, and beverages, and of general guest information.
    • Ability to work within and consistently build the service team and will be asked to help other team members as necessary.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with guests, co-workers, and supervisors.
    • Certification in the TIPS alcohol awareness program is required; workshops will be provided if not currently certified.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide general maintenance skills necessary for repair and maintenance of facility.
    • Conduct routine inspections of facilities and ensure department compliance to the Animal Exclusion Program at Glacier National Park.
    • Performs mixed duties in diagnosing and repair for the proper maintenance and operation of buildings at location relating to animal exclusion.

    Qualifications

    • Previous experience with pest elimination and control techniques highly preferred.

    • Must have the background knowledge in carpentry and landscaping and be skilled in the use of tools and equipment common to the trade.
    • Must be able to read, understand and comply with all current company policies and procedures.

    Qualifications

    • Ability to work with minimal supervision and leadership skills.
    • Knowledgeable about vehicle repair techniques and have an extensive mechanical aptitude.
    • Knowledge of DOT Regulations concerning the maintenance of a commercial fleet.

    Responsibilities

    • Hands on leadership required for opening, operating and closing the lodge and complex.
    • Leading and organizing a crew to offer 15 hours of coverage a day, 7 days a week, in-season. Ensuring quick professional response and communication amongst all departments and personnel.

    • Acts as Xanterra’s representative and professional liaison with vendors, outside service contractors and consultants, the National Park Service and other departments as needed.
    • Scheduling and overseeing preventative maintenance in all guest rooms and public areas

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Must possess the administrative and technical knowledge and 2 year’s experience to effectively manage related responsibilities and staff. Must possess strong organization skills and be knowledgeable of applicable codes as they relate to planning and scheduling repair and maintenance activities.
    • Must be proficient in supervising personnel in accordance with Xanterra’s policies and procedures. Must be able to mentor and develop existing personnel and ensure that staff attends all training as required.
    • Knowledge of OSHA (General Industry (1910) and Construction (1926) safety and health standards in cooperation with Xanterra’s policies, procedures and programs.
    • Must be able to efficiently communicate and coordinate working relationships with all Xanterra’s departments and NPS personnel through effective writing and speaking skills.
    • Must be proficient with Word and Excel computer programs.
    • Must have a general knowledge of procurement and computerized maintenance programs.
    • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints.

    Responsibilities

    • Supervises the Lodge’s maintenance personnel, ensuring adherence to company policies and standards.
    • Clean and maintain Lodges exterior spaces (parking lot, patio, sidewalks) and interior common areas including lobby, hallways, public bathrooms, fitness room, entry ways, and stairways.

    • Ensure all maintenance requests and work orders are completed in a timely and professional manner, and in accordance with applicable laws and the best use of resources.
    • Supports hotel departmental maintenance programs and executes daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual checklists.
    • Basic repairs include plumbing, electrical, heating/cooling, ventilation, furnishings, fixtures, painting, drywall, light carpentry, door, and window repairs.
    • Preventative maintenance on all maintenance tools and equipment.
    • Preventative maintenance of all rooms and common areas by following the established maintenance program.
    • Performs mixed duties in diagnosing and repair for the proper maintenance and operation of building and the systems on property.
    • Snow and Ice removal as needed, spreading ice melt, shoveling, and snowplowing.
    • Overseeing the inventory and use of materials needed for job completion or inventory replacement. Coordinating orders with the Location Manager.
    • Responsible for adhering to Xanterra’s Ecologix program.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Knowledgeable in the following areas and the ability to use tools and equipment common to the trade:
      • Heating & Electric, Plumbing, and Carpentry.

    Responsibilities

    Responsibilities

    • Provide support to the Glacier HR team during the employee check-in and onboarding process during the early part of the season (April through early June).
    • Establish strong and collaborative relationships with the Location Managers & Assistant Location Managers, HR team, department managers, and employees on location. Represent the HR department and Company in a professional and cooperative manner at all times.
    • Provide a sounding board for employees at all levels; handle personnel issues with sensitivity and confidentiality as required; resolve issues in a tactful and timely manner. When appropriate, utilize and/or provide employees with available support resources and make appropriate referrals. Make proper judgment calls regarding escalation of issues including dorm compliance issues, employee relations issues, NPS violations, interpersonal conflicts, workplace concerns, etc.
    • Serve as a primary resource for investigations in highly sensitive areas including claims of harassment, discrimination, threats of violence, etc. Perform thorough, timely, and effective investigations, conducting sensitive interviews and involving others as appropriate. Make recommendations and reach conclusions using judgement and application of policy and precedence. Involve and/or communicate necessary information to the Director of Human Resources, Operations, and Leadership.
    • Respond to requests and concerns from Employees, Support Staff, Management Staff, NPS and others as appropriate.
    • Maintain high standards of guest service and confidentiality when interacting with staff.
    • Ensure main HR office is copied on relevant documents in a timely manner.
    • Provide proper level of security and confidentiality around employee files and information.
    • Serve as a role model for employees. The minimum expected is maintaining a professional demeanor at all times, the personal observation of all Xanterra Parks & Resorts policies, state and federal laws.
    • Support efforts of fellow HR staff members and contribute to team effort in whatever capacity may be needed.
    • Conduct exit interviews, actively monitor turnover trends and identify areas of concern related to retention at the property level.
    • Assist with employee communication, recognition, and engagement initiatives.
    • Attend various location and department meetings on a regular basis and contribute useful information as appropriate. Share information gained in meetings with HR Director in an effort to support effective location communication.
    • Communicate appropriately and accurately on open positions both on-location and park-wide. Direct employees appropriately on both internal applications and transfer applications.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Human Resources.

    Qualifications

    • Previous experience handling Employee Relations and conducting investigations required.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

    Responsibilities

    • Operate equipment in a safe and proper operation all weather conditions.
    • Maintain professionalism while working outdoors in extreme weather and during vehicle break-downs.
    • Quotes costs of fares, issues tickets and receives payment. Responsible for balancing cash.
    • Assists with guest and employee luggage and the loading and unloading of the luggage.
    • Responsible for a clean and neat appearance in the approved uniform.
    • Responsible for cleaning, fueling and ensuring vehicle is safe before and after each shift.
    • Must accurately complete all daily DOT paperwork and reports each shift and file them according to policy.

    Qualifications

    • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with guests and all other co-workers.
    • Must practice courteous guest service while keeping shuttles on a time schedule, and remaining punctual.
    • Position may spend up to 10 hours driving (15 hours total work) on various types of road conditions.

    Physical Requirements include:

    • Drivers must be at least 21 years of age.
    • Possess a valid U.S. Driver's License.
    • Must meet all DOT physical requirements and pass a DOT physical exam including a pre-employment drug screen and federally required random screens throughout the season, and comply with the Xanterra Driver Safety Program and Policy.
    • Must be able to sit, stand, stretch, and bend for up to a 15 hour day. (typically 8-10 hours)
    • Able to work outdoors in variable weather (including rain, sleet, snow, direct sunlight, high winds, and temperatures ranging from 0 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Simultaneously steer a vehicle, shift its transmission, operate accelerator and brake pedals, and provide customer service while driving in heavy traffic.
    • Ability to help guests and employees in and out of the vehicle.
    • Ability to load and unload guest luggage several times a day at elevations ranging from 3,500 feet to 6,700 feet above sea level.
