  • Maintenance Staff

    Maintenance & Facilities
    $18.00 / hour

    The maintenance staff will help maintain overall cleanliness and maintenance of the port.  Your duties will include maintenance and upkeep of all projects necessary to keep the entire site operation looking its very best. Position is non-exempt, hourly DOE.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: None

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Always keep safety foremost in your mind and actions when on the job;
    • Ground’s landscaping and maintenance as required;
    • Properly and confidently operate shop equipment;
    • Basic carpentry, plumbing and painting on construction and building projects as directed;
    • Operation of forklift;
    • Communicate comfortably with guests and colleagues;
    • Deliver a first-class experience to all guests and visitors;
    • Ongoing cleaning of all bathroom facilities;

  • Senior Manager Facilities & Maintenance

    Maintenance & Facilities

    JOB SCHEDULE: 20-60 hours per week as needed. Schedule is flexible based on the time of year and the demands of the operation. Spring and Summer schedule is more rigorous and will include 10-hour days and 50-hour weeks at times, particularly during spring startup.

    SALARY:  Annual Salary; 5% bonus based on performance relative to board-set KPI’s.

    JOB SUMMARY: Senior Manager Facilities & Maintenance will oversee the repairs, installations, and upkeep of all WCDG buildings, offices, and equipment, including the MV Malaspina.  Main duties include designing maintenance procedures, tracking budgets and expenses, and performing inspections on different facilities to find problems and make repairs.  Oversee general trail clearing and maintenance as well as planting and maintenance of trees at the Mill.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  As directed by the Director of Facilities & Maintenance

    • Responsible for budgeting and controlling costs for facilities and maintenance department.
    • Facilities – includes everything from water, power, heat, sewer, roof, sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, restrooms, and kitchen facilities.
    • Work with contractors for facility maintenance and construction projects.
    • Main contact for Fire Department.
    • Hires, leads, trains and schedules team of maintenance staff.
    • Ensure operational efficiency of electrical equipment and mechanical systems through timely inspection and repair
    • Small engine repair – e-bikes, outboard motors, buses, etc. – and coordinate the process of daily inspections and work orders with Tour Operations and Port Operations Departments to ensure preventative maintenance occurs and vehicles are available for revenue generation. 
    • Implement workplace safety policies and standards.
    • Familiar with OSHA Standards and compliance.
    • Ensure that company premises and facilities are kept in clean and hygienic condition.
    • General building maintenance, including water, power, and sewer
    • Clear and maintain trails.
    • Assist with general organization including hanging signs, painting lines in parking lot, etc.
    • Plants, transplants, and maintains trees and plants to ensure their healthy, safe, and attractive condition.

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Knowledge:  Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems; familiarity in drafting and understanding blueprints and schematics.

  • Housing Manager

    MV Malaspina

    Job Summary: The Housing Manager will oversee and coordinate the hotel operations of the MV Malaspina, providing quality service and accommodation to residents and guests.  The successful candidate will be a leader and strategic thinker who can work with management and other departments to ensure a safe and hospitable environment for residents.  This position requires the Housing Manager to live on board the MV Malaspina.  The ideal candidate is a seasoned and highly intelligent hotel professional with outstanding management skills and extensive hands-on experience. Available to work when needed, including weekends, holidays, and nights.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new MV Malaspina Passenger Services Representatives, Janitors, and Line Cooks.
    • Oversees the daily operations and staffing of the MV Malaspina.
    • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations. 
    • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Coordinates and oversees all hotel operations, ensuring quality service is provided within the established business plan and budget.
    • Ensures full compliance to operating controls, SOPs, policies, procedures and service standards.
    • Responsible for safety regulations, fire regulations, food handler certification, DEC requirements, and other legal requirements. 
    • Inspects facilities to ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
    • Ensures maintenance issues are addressed in a timely manner.
    • Respond to audits to ensure continual improvement is achieved.
    • Works to resolve issues or problems that residents may experience.
    • Handles special requests and accommodations.

    Job Summary:

    The Janitorial Staff performs general cleaning and sanitizing tasks and services throughout the Welcome Center, M/V Malaspina and grounds.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: None

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Cleans, disinfects and replenish supplies in restroom, kitchen and common areas;
    • Vacuums, sweeps and cleans floors, rugs, furniture, and drapes;
    • Remove waste and empty trash and cigarette receptacles;
    • Wipes and dusts surfaces and cleans mirrors and windows;
    • Loads washers and dryers and folds sheets and towels in laundry room;
    • Stocks linens, towels, washcloths, and hand towels; 
    • Maintain cleaning chart indicating areas that were cleaned and inspected;
    • Replenish cleaning and maintenance supplies;
    • Organize janitorial storage areas;
    • Make sure all doors, windows, entrances and exits are securely closed and locked in evening;
    • Notifies Housing Manager if something is not working properly;

    MV Malaspina

    Job Summary:

    The Line Cook will prepare meal ingredients, simple dishes, condiments, and other items as directed by Head Cook for the M/V Malaspina guests.

    • Prepares meal ingredients as directed by the head cook.
    • Prepares fresh produce by peeling, cutting, and portioning.
    • Prepares meat by trimming, cutting, and portioning.

  • Passenger Services Representative

    MV Malaspina

    Job Summary: The Passenger Services Representative (PSR) is responsible for providing outstanding customer service to guests aboard the MV Malaspina, the first ferry that was built for the State of Alaska and now owned by Ward Cove Dock Group (WCDG), providing housing for seasonal employees. P PSRs will be performing tasks in the galley, dining room, cafeteria, crew area, staterooms and public areas aboard the MV Malaspina.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: None

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Be the first point of contact for residents and will be responsible for handling all resident inquiries and requests.
    • Responsible for handling resident check-ins and check-outs.
    • Responsible for ensuring that all residents follow established housing guidelines.
    • Assists in maintaining security of the vessel. Maintains awareness of vessel and lot security and reports any suspicious activity or threats immediately.
    • Accurately and efficiently complete all sales transactions and maintain proper cash at POS registers in cafeteria at pursers desk and in crew area; 
    • Assist in processing and replenishing merchandise; participate in receiving and monitoring floor stock; ensures re-wraps are done promptly;
    • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and practices including signing, pricing, and loss prevention;
    • Assist with monitoring inventories of supplies; ensuring venues are clean and in top condition;
    • Work a flexible schedule;
    • May assist with dishing up hot cereals and bussing tables. Cleans and operates various galley equipment. Sweeps, mops, and vacuums all areas, as needed.     $25.00 / hour + tips

    This position includes a retention bonus of $5 per hour, paid at the end of the contract, for a total wage of $30 per hour.  Drive a shuttle bus from Ward Cove’s historical Pulp Mill while having a set schedule with work-life balance where you can still enjoy Alaska! The CDL Driver is responsible for the safe transportation of guests between Ward Cove and downtown Ketchikan through the Tongass National Forest. Whether you like storytelling, touring, or just chatting with our guests - here you are more than just a driver! Position is non-exempt, hourly DOE.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Prioritize the safety of your vehicle and guests by driving carefully through a highway and town;
    • Ensure safe and efficient boarding / disembarkation of guests with the Guest Service Representatives;
    • Applies knowledge of the local area to provide information to passengers;
    • Drive in accordance with federal and state (Alaska) DOT regulations and employer shuttle training;
    • Apply knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations through required documents maintained daily;
    • Performs inspections on shuttles and maintain shuttle cleanliness throughout the day;

    Guest Service Representatives will be cross trained on a variety of responsibilities to assist every department at The Mill at Ward Cove.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting guests boarding shuttle buses, drive an ADA van, outfit guests for tours, docent at the museum, lead gold panning demonstrations, run a cash register, sell tours, and provide information to guests about The Mill at Ward Cove and downtown Ketchikan.   

    Duties/Responsibilities: 

    • Meet and greet guests with a professional attitude and appearance and provide exceptional customer service; 
    • Communicate effectively amongst your team and all departments; 
    • Knowledge and promotion of all Ward Cove venues and retail, Answer and address any guest concerns or questions;

    Port Operations

    The Mechanic will inspect, service, and maintain a diesel and gas-powered vehicle fleet. As a lead mechanic, this position is responsible for inspecting engines and equipment, carrying out services, conducting repairs, and providing routine maintenance on the fleet to keep them operating safely. Knowledge of small engine and outboard motor maintenance a plus. Position is non-exempt, hourly DOE.

    • Conduct regularly scheduled inspections and maintenance on all company vehicles
    • Document and maintain accurate records of maintenance, work orders, driver inspection reports, parts orders and DOT inspections

    Port Operations

    Port Security Staff lead the charge in safety and security for the facilities and guests at The Mill at Ward Cove port facility working in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and Ward Cove Dock Group’s Facility Security Plan (FSP) to provide quality service to our guests and locals. Position is non-exempt, hourly DOE.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: None

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for patrolling restricted and non-restricted areas on the Ward Cove dock, facilities, and property, reporting any breach of security to appropriate personnel;
    • Ensures embarking is controlled. Responsible for vehicle and traffic control accessing the dock;
    • Understands and implements various Maritime Security (MARSEC) Level changes and implements required port enforcement action;
    • Work with USCG, local authorities, and cruise lines in maintaining safety and guest satisfaction;
    • Provides vehicle and pedestrian traffic control duties to ensure safe passage for port related pedestrian and vehicular traffic;
    • Ensures vehicles entering the property and dock have the proper identification/pass;
    • When required, places or moves pedestrian control devices and barricades;
    • Lead and participate in real-world safety drills & exercises;
    • Use of hand-held radios and cell phones for succinct distribution of information;

    Retail Sales Associates serve as a customer service representative for guests at The Mill at Ward Cove; assist guests with purchases; prepare and stock merchandise for sale; perform inventory control duties; organize and distribute merchandise. Perform other duties related to the successful operation of the retail store including cleaning and moderate lifting. Position is non-exempt, hourly DOE.

    • Accurately and efficiently complete all sales transactions and maintain proper cash and media accountabilities at POS registers;
    • Maintain an awareness of the all-product knowledge information, merchandise promotions, test merchandise and advertisements;

Guides will be rotated through different tours throughout the cruise ship season, so every week will be a new adventure! Guides will be cross trained in leading electric mountain bike tours, lake kayaking, zodiac, sea cycling and hiking tours, as well as rotating as a safety boat driver and/or camp hand. Position is non-exempt, hourly DOE.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Conduct safe and informative, high-quality tours, which meet and exceed guest expectations
    • Meet and greet guests with a professional attitude and appearance;
    • Service & maintain all equipment in the best possible condition, report damage and issues to supervisor;
    • Share knowledge and relevant information in a fun and entertaining manner in front of groups as large as twenty people;
    • Prepare all equipment and supplies for each day’s needs;
    • Participate in all required training and educational clinics;
    • Attend all safety training, meetings, and clinics. Maintain current knowledge of all safety procedures;
    • Work collaboratively with fellow guides and all management;
    • Outfit guests in weather appropriate gear and safety equipment;
    • Campfire, beverage, and snack setup at camp;
    • Oversee safety of kayak guests from the safety boat and help as needed;
    • Provide instructions to guests of varying skill levels on the safe use of equipment;
    • Answers and addresses any guest concerns or questions;
    • Cleans and organizes all equipment, vehicles, and workspaces, and maintains inspection log;
    • Always demonstrate outstanding guest service and professionalism;
    • Build a comprehensive knowledge base about the flora and fauna of Southeast Alaska, the history of The Mill at Ward Cove and surrounding areas;
    • Work a flexible schedule;
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Skills/Abilities:

    • Safety Focus: Must be able to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for guests, employees, and the public;
    • Customer-Service Focus: Must understand that customer service is a top priority and must conduct all actions with this in mind;
    • Attention to Detail: Maintaining high company standards in the upkeep of gear and equipment, presentation of the tour product and customer focus;
    • Problem-Solving Skills: Must be flexible and able to produce appropriate solutions quickly, working across the organization at times. Must be able to find creative solutions to unique problems and employ a logical and organized thought process;
    • Presentation skills: Must be able to deliver a scripted/non-scripted, entertaining, informative, safety briefing and tour presentation on a 2–3-hour tour multiple times a day to guests with varying backgrounds and skillsets;
    • Successful completion of on-the-job training required;
    • Must be able to work collaboratively in a team setting.

    Education and Experience:

    • First aid & CPR certified; lifeguarding, water rescue, kayak instruction helpful, WFR a plus.
    • 1 to 2 years of previous guiding experience in an outdoor environment preferred, but not required.
    • Driver’s License Preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Able to work outdoors for long days in diverse weather conditions.
    • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
    • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds at times.

    Tour Sales

    Tour Sales Representatives promote and sell pier-side tickets/vouchers to cruise guests and non-cruise guests for all excursions offered by The Mill at Ward Cove. Tour Sales Representatives will ensure guests meet the required excursion requirements, confirm guests sign excursion waivers as required, announce excursion departures over the PA system, and keep accurate records of excursion inventory and departure times. The Tour Sales Representative will be knowledgeable about all excursions, shuttles, independent tour operators, and be an excellent source of information about the area. 

    Duties & Responsibilities: 

    • Meet and greet guests with a professional attitude and appearance 
    • Provide excellent customer service to all guests 
    • Provide guests with information about all tours, shuttles, and events available to complete the sale, and upsell tour products 
    • Efficiently use a computerized reservation system to book tours and shuttle tickets 
    • Assist with preparing for ship arrivals, including updating daily tour sales, departure times, and ensuring that all kiosks are ready and available when guests arrive 
    • Help with updating FareHarbor (reservation system) from pre-arrival and day of sales updates, as well as updating tour display system  
    • Knowledge and promotion of all Ward Cove venues and retail 
    • Prepare all equipment and supplies for each day’s needs 
    • Participate in all required training and educational clinics 
    • Attend all safety training, meetings, and clinics 
    • Maintain current knowledge of all safety procedures 
    • Work as greeters to welcome guests and conduct guest orientations 
    • Answer and address any guest concerns or questions 
    • Cleans and organizes all equipment and workspaces 
    • Always demonstrate outstanding guest service and professionalism 
    • Work a flexible schedule 
    • Assist with monitoring inventories of supplies; ensuring venues are clean and in top condition 
    • Other duties as assigned 

    Job Qualifications: 

    • Ability to learn, retain and communicate information about excursions to cruise ship guests for sales and upselling of tours/shuttles/events 
    • Must understand that exemplary customer service is a top priority and be able to communicate in a professional, friendly, and accurate manner 
    • Accuracy in the upkeep of manifests, sales reports, tour information and availability with a keen eye for detail 
    • Must be flexible and able to produce appropriate solutions quickly, working across the organization at times 
    • Must be able to find creative solutions to unique problems and employ a logical and organized thought process 
    • Should possess good computer skills and be able to learn the internal booking system and accurately enter information 
    • Be able to stand for 8 hours or more and work in a demanding environment with crowds 
    • Previous sales experience preferred, but is not required
