Job Description

Job Title:  Hockey Athletics Specialist 

Classification:  Seasonal Staff reports to Directors, Asst. Director, Athletic Directors

Position Purpose:

To coach and provide instruction to campers in a designated sport(s) (in individual and/or team environments), develop campers’ athletic skills, and create a safe, fun, and participatory environment. This position also is responsible for managing the physical operation of the field sports equipment and facilities.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Develop and deliver a designated sport(s) program(s) that is appropriate for the age and ability of campers

    • Create lesson plans and activities that match the campers’ abilities.

    • Evaluate abilities of campers. 

    • Coach and provide designated hockey instruction to campers (in individual and/or team environments).

    • Use and demonstrate appropriate use of designated sport-specific equipment.  

  2. Encourage the growth and development of campers 

    • Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit.

    • Be encouraging and positive. 

    • Encourage participation of all campers in activities.

  3. Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.

    • Be alert and attentive at all times.  

    • Model safe and appropriate behavior.  

  4. Manage and care for physical facilities and equipment in the field sports program area

    • Maintain necessary sports equipment, including, but not limited to: skates, pucks, helmets, pads, sticks, goals.

    • Ensure the security necessary sports equipment when not in use.

    • Ensure the upkeep of necessary sports equipment.  

    • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.

    • Clean field sports equipment on a designated schedule.

Other Job Duties:

  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.

  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.

  • Assist in the planning and execution of any special events.

  • Live in bunks with campers and other staff members.

  • Eat meals with your campers

  • Share Communal bunk responsibilities with fellow bunk staff.

Equipment Used (includes, but is not limited to):

  • Hockey: Nets, "The Garden" (hockey arena), sticks, pads/equipment, scoreboard.

Qualifications 

Demonstrated experience in specific sport(s) instruction or training.

  • High school diploma or GED.  . 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Training and experience in teaching specific sport(s) to children.

  • Experience in setting up, using, securing, and maintaining field sports equipment and facilities.

  • Knowledge of sports medicine or athletic training is desirable.

  • Ability to communicate and work with groups of campers (ages 7-17) of various abilities and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.

  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

Physical Requirements:

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

  • Ability to lift, twist, bend, kneel, and squat repeatedly.

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.

  • Ability to stand and run for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours/day.  

  • Ability to manipulate, use, and demonstrate sport-specific equipment and activities.  

  • Ability to work irregular hours.
