The USNWC is open year-round with peak season dates running from approximately March through October. Our highest volume days tend to be weekends coinciding with our major festivals and other special events. Opportunity for employment exists for those interested in summer, seasonal jobs, those looking for extra part-time work on weekends and evenings, and even those seeking a permanent, full-time position.

The majority of our seasonal positions do not require technical experience in the industry; however, given the frequent, high-volume nature of guest interaction associated with most roles, exceptional communication skills are essential.

If a job description indicates that a position requires a current First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification, please note, the Whitewater Center offers certification courses in-house. There are also opportunities to obtain more advanced safety training.

  • Activities Guide

    Outdoor Activities
    Charlotte
    $15.00 / hour

    Outdoor Activities Guides are the core delivery vehicle for experiences at the Whitewater Center. They serve to promote positive interactions and experiences in a variety of outdoor activities. Positions vary from seasonal to year-round with hours ranging based upon availability and interest. New guides are provided paid training and shadowing opportunities to build skills to operate competently and confidently, previous experience is not required.

    Guiding specialties are divided into 5 categories. Guides can develop skills to work in multiple disciplines or focus in a single activity area. The specialties include Whitewater Rafting, Flatwater Paddling, Deep Water Solo, Mountain Biking, and Ziplines/Ropes Courses. Guides report to the Operations Manager for each specialty.

    Responsibilities 

    • Serve as the resident expert of the facility and the products/services offered 
    • Interact with guests in a positive manner at all times 
    • Maintain a high level of professionalism while interacting with the public and staff 
    • Provide guests with instruction on equipment and any necessary briefings 
    • Answer questions and troubleshoot guest needs 
    • Effectively communicate and enforce regulations and policies 
    • Respond appropriately to all emergencies 
    • Perform safety inspections on activities and equipment daily 
    • Identify safety issues and communicate to management 
    • Engage the chain-of-command as appropriate for assistance  

     

    Requirements  

    • The minimum age requirement is 17 for most specialties 
    • Excellent verbal communication skills 
    • Ability to use sound judgment with safety as a top priority 
    • Ability to take direction and work without immediate supervision 
    • Disposition toward continued learning and improvement 
    • First Aid, CPR & AED, or Lifeguarding Certification may be required 
    • Participation in training and skills development as scheduled 
    • Weekend availability is preferred

    Overview of Department 

    The Outdoor Activities Department is responsible for leading and supporting experiences in a variety of water and land-based sports. The department also instructs guests through the Whitewater Center’s Outdoor School and Summer Camps. Outdoor Activities employees engage with guests through an assortment of pass activities and help create memorable outdoor experiences.

  • Aerial Inspection and Maintenance Technician

    Outdoor Activities
    Charlotte

    Aerial Inspection and Maintenance Technicians are responsible for the construction, inspection, and maintenance of land activities located at the Whitewater Center.  Activities include, but are not limited to, zip lines, high and low ropes elements, continuous belay systems, climbing walls, and belayed jumps. Work is performed year-round in an outdoor environment. Technicians can either be hired as full-time, benefits-eligible employees or seasonal employees. This position reports directly to the Outdoor Activities Maintenance Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Inspect, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on all elements and structures associated with Land Activities at Whitewater
    • Assist in the construction of new activities – complete courses, individual elements, and/or the remodeling of existing courses
    • Ensure the safety of guests on highly trafficked activities by completing thorough, regular inspections of all courses and systems with strong attention to detail
    • Maintain availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required

     

    Requirements

    • Familiar with quality and safety standards set by the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and other relevant organizations
    • Strong background in working at heights, rigging, ropes course management, carpentry, or other related fields
    • Experience working safely and effectively with hand tools and power tools
    • Ability to contribute to a specialized, team-oriented work environment

     

    Physical Demands

    • Must be able to work outdoors for sustained periods of time under varying weather conditions
    • Must be able to work comfortably and responsibly at heights of up to 100 feet and occasionally in confined spaces
    • Must be able to lift and carry at least 75 pounds over various terrain
    • Must be able to frequently stand, hang, stoop, reach, climb and visually inspect to identify safety hazards

  • Dishwasher

    Food & Beverage

    Dishwashers at the Whitewater Center are responsible for washing and cleaning tableware, pots, pans, and cooking equipment in a high-volume restaurant environment. Dishwashers must also keep the dish area and equipment sanitary and organized. This is a part-time, hourly position that reports directly to the Executive Chef.

     Responsibilities

    • Safely clean, organize, and maintain dishes and dish station equipment
    • Load, run, and unload the dish machine
    • Immediately report any functional or mechanical problems to Executive Chef 
    • Bag and haul dish room trash to dumpster at designated times
    • Fill in as needed to ensure a smooth and efficient operation within the kitchen

    Requirements

    • No prior restaurant experience is needed
    • Excellent communication skills are a must
    • Comfortable working in a hot, wet, humid, and loud environment for entire shifts
    • Maintain availability to work holidays, evenings, and holidays as required

  • Server

    Food & Beverage

    Servers at the Whitewater Center are responsible for providing friendly and responsive service in a high-volume restaurant environment. Servers will act as ambassadors of the Whitewater brand while guests are dining on-site. The Server is a part-time, hourly position that reports directly to the Front of House managers.

    Responsibilities

    • Maintain a professional dining experience- accurately take orders, submit orders to kitchen, deliver items to guests, refill glasses, etc.
    • Stay open and attentive to the needs of the guest
    • Handle cash transactions and operate a restaurant point-of-sale system
    • Stay current and be able to inform guests of menu options, sides, and specials
    • Maintain a clean dining environment- buss tables, sweep floors, etc. as needed
    • Stay up to date on side work tasks and efficiently make use of downtime
    • Maintain accurate knowledge of operating hours, activities, and products offered outside of Food and Beverage department

  • Swiftwater Rescue Instructor

    Outdoor School
    Charlotte

    Swiftwater Rescue Instructors provide Swiftwater and flood rescue training to public safety (Fire, EMA, Police) and military teams. This position is responsible for teaching a variety of classes including in-water, nighttime and raft-based courses. Instructors must convey progressive and best-in-class techniques that enable program participants to save lives in emergency settings. Swiftwater Rescue Instructors are part-time employees that report to the Outdoor School Director.

    Responsibilities

    • Facilitate Swiftwater, flood and boat-based instruction to groups with an informative and enjoyable approach while proactively managing the inherent risks involved with water rescue
    • Provide constructive and meaningful feedback to students to foster skill development
    • Engage in class planning sessions, utilize student-focused instruction techniques, and develop performance assessments
    • Execute all safety and operational processes involved in Swiftwater rescue instruction for up to Class IV whitewater
    • Practice thorough communication with the paddle sports team and aid where needed to ensure guest service standards and efficient operation across public-facing and instruction programs
    • Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products and services offered by the Whitewater center
    • Maintain availability to work weekdays and weekends 

    Requirements

    • Clear and professional communication skills including public speaking and demonstration
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience guiding or whitewater kayaking in up to class III whitewater
    • Prior experience teaching or facilitating classes
    • Prior experience working in the fire or rescue field preferred
    • Prior participation in Swiftwater classes is required
    • Instructor Course Requirements
      • Whitewater Level I and II Swiftwater and Flood Rescue Class 
      • 5-day Instructor Candidate Course or Shadow Process 
      • Whitewater guide safety check process
    • Current First Aid, CPR & AED Certification – courses are offered by the Whitewater Center
    • ACA Whitewater Swiftwater Instructor certification preferred

  • Utility Staff - Host, Runner, Busser

    Food & Beverage
    Charlotte

    Utility Staff at the Whitewater Center are trained to operate in multiple roles within the Food & Beverage Department to ensure positive and engaging experiences in the Rivers Edge Restaurant. These roles are part-time and report directly to the Front of House Manager. 

    Responsibilities

    • Warmly greet guests approaching the restaurant, assign tables, and seat guests efficiently
    • Effectively maintain a waitlist during peak periods
    • Assist servers with setting tables, food delivery, refills, and clearing tables
    • Help restock items and inventory as needed for servers and bartenders
    • Between settings, promptly clean table tops, chairs, booths, and surrounding floor space
    • Take tableware to the dish room to sort and organize in the appropriate areas for washing
    • Adhere to grooming and appearance standards
    • Respond to guest requests appropriately and communicate needs to other staff
    • Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products, and food options offered at the facility

  • Whitewater Kayak Coordinator

    Outdoor Activities

    The Whitewater Kayak Coordinator plays a key role in the oversight of scheduling, planning and management of the Whitewater Center’s whitewater kayaking instruction programs. As a member of the paddle sports leadership team, the coordinator will also assist in recruiting new team members, responding to emergency calls, executing winter programming activities, managing day-to-day operations, and project work as assigned. This position is a full-time, hourly role that reports directly to the Kayak Supervisor.

    Responsibilities 

    • Provide whitewater kayak instruction for guests. 
    • Maintain accurate knowledge of all instruction programs and assist guests in the correct booking for their skill level. 
    • Understand and manage the kayak instruction reservation process
    • Assist in the daily management of kayak operations including meeting instructors and guests for instruction. 
    • Management of kayak instructor scheduling. 
    • Assist the Kayak Supervisor with the growth and the development of paddle sports instruction programming.  

     Preferred Qualifications 

    • Prior experience working within the paddlesports industry in an operations or logistics role. 
    • A minimum of 2 years of class iii kayak instruction experience and/or an ACA Level 4 Kayak Instructor Certification.
    • Current ACA Swiftwater Rescue Certification
    • Excellent communication and guest interaction skills. 
    • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office software suite.
    • Current First Aid and CPR certifications.

    Physical Demands

    • Must be able to teach kayak lessons comfortably in class III whitewater. 
    • Ability to lift 75 pounds.

  • Land Sport Operations Supervisor

    The Land Sport Operations Supervisor is a key leadership position with a critical role in the fulfillment of the Whitewater Center brand’s promise of delivering high quality, active experiences. The Land Sport Operations Supervisor assists in leading the team of front-line staff responsible for assisting and guiding guests through the Whitewater Center’s land-based activities. The ability to train and coach staff is critical to the success of this role, as is effective problem solving and strategic thinking. The Land Sport Operations Supervisor is a full-time, benefits-eligible, on-site position that reports to the Land Sport Operations Manager.

    Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for daily operations of all Land Sports activities alongside other Supervisors/Assistant Managers.
    • Manage an efficient operation, demonstrate fiscal awareness, and continuously ensure the proper execution of tasks and utilization of resources.
    • Ensure that the team maintains high safety standards and provides an excellent guest experience.
    • Involvement in basic maintenance and inspections on all activity equipment and structures.
    • Maintain up-to-date skill sets and abilities in all Land areas and provide field support as necessary.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements:

    • Strong understanding of operational systems for low/high challenge courses and climbing walls.
    • Strong leadership and public speaking skills.
    • Ability to effectively supervise a team

  • Guest Services Assistant Manager

    Responsibilities

    • Oversee the operation of various guest services locations and processes including pass sales, gear rentals, equipment storage, security, parking, custodial services, guest feedback, and inquiries.
    • Execution of processes and procedures to ensure cleanliness, quality, consistent guest service delivery, and staff.
    • Manage first encounters with guests and act as a first responder to guest needs and issues
    • Maintain a keen awareness of how the brand is being represented and demonstrate a relentless pursuit of meeting the brand promise.
    • Manage an efficient operation, demonstrate fiscal awareness, and continuously ensure the proper execution of tasks and utilization of resources.

    Requirements

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Hospitality, Management, or another related field is preferred.
    • 3 years of management-level experience in guest services, customer service, or the hospitality industry.

    • Ability to work well under pressure in a calm, mature, process-driven manner.
    • Ability to process unique circumstances and provide positive resolution.

  • Operations Manager

  • Outdoor School Manager

    Outdoor Activities

    The Outdoor School Manager is responsible for overseeing the Whitewater Center summer camps, outdoor education, instruction/certification Programs and staff within the Outdoor School (OS). While supporting the vision and continued expansion of the school, the OS Manager will oversee a team of full-time staff and up to 50 part-time staff.  The OS Manager is a full-time, on-site, benefits eligible position, and reports directly to the Outdoor Activities Director.

    Responsibilities

    • Daily management of program operations, including but not limited to; engaging customer needs, staff forecasting and scheduling, emergency response call and logistical support.
    • Oversee recruiting, hiring, training, and daily management of all program staff
    • Oversee ongoing program development and expansion
    • Organizing and managing both logistical and operational needs for Whitewater Center instruction and certification courses
    • Work directly with the OS Team to ensure all logistical needs are set to ensure program success  

    Requirements

    • Must be 21 years of age or older
    • Possess a 4-year degree in Outdoor Recreation, Business, or another related field
    • Minimum 3 years of experience managing a summer camp program
    • Certifications in CPR and First Aid
    • Wilderness medicine certifications (preferred)
    • Prior experience in teaching outdoor education programs; Wilderness Medicine, Backpacking, Mountain Biking, or other related topics
    • Prior experience in managing overnight camps (preferred)
    • Safety-oriented, patient, organized, enthusiastic, and flexible
    • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with staff and guests
    • Excellent driving record with no major infractions or unsafe conduct – position requires driving a 15-passenger van while towing utility trailers of varying sizes

  • Marketing Director

    The Marketing Director drives the strategic planning and communication of the Whitewater brand and leads the marketing department on a day-to-day basis to engage Whitewater audiences. This position is responsible for the planning, execution and analysis of Whitewater’s marketing strategy and positioning within the outdoor and hospitality industries. The Marketing Director and the marketing team are responsible for supporting all internal Whitewater teams in the execution of the brand promise and the delivery of outdoor experiences to guests across all business units. The Marketing Director is a full-time, benefits-eligible position that reports to the Brand Director.  

    Responsibilities

    Team Leadership & Strategic Development 

    • Direct management of the internal marketing team to deliver consistent and high-quality messaging centered around engaging the outdoor lifestyle through inspirational content and active experiences 
    • Relationship development and project management with third party service providers and vendors to execute marketing projects and campaigns  
    • Drive the development of all future programming and communication strategies on behalf of the organization in conjunction with the marketing team and senior management 

    Research & Analysis  

    • Develop an ongoing and intimate knowledge of the outdoor industry and Whitewater experiences to ensure that all marketing efforts are aligned with the outdoor lifestyle and the Whitewater brand  
    • Proactively research and analyze opportunities for brand development to engage the organization’s target audiences 
    • Gather and analyze data for reporting on consumer behavior and identify key performance metrics  

    Project Management & Advertising 

    • Source, analyze and recommend paid and earned media opportunities across a variety of mediums to promote Whitewater’s programming, products and services  
    • Identify, purchase and execute all paid media opportunities on behalf of the Whitewater brand in conjunction with the marketing team 
    • Drive the planning and execution of all marketing deliverables to ensure on-time execution and alignment with brand standards   

    Creative & Digital 

    • Work with internal and external creatives to produce inspiring and relevant content centered around the outdoors including short films, written stories, photography collections, journals and other forms of content  
    • Oversee all Whitewater digital assets including websites, social media, e-commerce and other platforms 
    • Continuously analyze Whitewater’s audience and communication mix, including acquisitions and behaviors, across all platforms 


    Requirements 

    • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, or related discipline 
    • MBA strongly preferred 
    • 10+ years relevant marketing experience 
    • Experience managing internal teams and third-party service providers to execute campaigns  
    • Intellectual curiosity and an aptitude for critical analysis  
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills 
    • Flexibility in schedule for varied workweeks and programming coverage – nights, weekends, and holidays are required 

    Physical Demands

    • Must be able to safely self-transport over uneven terrain or in a confined space
    • Must be able to stand for sustained periods of time
    • Must be able to lift and move at least 25 pounds
