  • Professional Program Intern

    Charlotte

    The Whitewater Professional Intern is an integral part of the team working in a leadership role to accomplish Whitewater’s mission.  The Professional Intern Program is designed for undergraduate students in their Senior year or Graduate students looking for leadership and management experience.  Professional Interns will focus on all aspects of Whitewater’s operation, specifically leading and managing teams. The Whitewater Professional Intern is an hourly, full-time seasonal role that reports to an Operation Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Engage closely with an area of focus of a specific team.  Opportunities lie within Outdoor Activities, Guest Experience, Event Management, or Food and Beverage.
    • Work closely with executive team and department heads focusing operational efficiencies, data analytics, labor management, employee coaching and evaluation, event programming, marketing, and other relevant operational needs.
    • Oversee day-to-day operations of specific team.
    • Manage and lead a team of employees (including, but not limited to, scheduling, hiring, coaching, documenting disciplinary actions, and recruiting).
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    • Must be a current or rising senior enrolled in an undergraduate program or current graduate student enrolled at an accredited college or university.
    • Must have open availability to work for a minimum 12-week period between the dates of May 1 and September 4.
    • Able to effectively communicate orally and in writing in English with other employees, guests, and vendors.
    • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during other Whitewater events as needed.

    Areas of Focus

    Guest Services – Assist in the daily operation and management of front-line staff responsible for consistently creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all guests.

    Retail – Assist in the operation and management of the sales staff and supporting the retail environment, including the Outfitters store, assisting guests and delivering exceptional customer service.

    Group Sales – Work with event coordinators on booking and processing private group events at the facility by fulfilling the needs of all inbound group inquiries from program determination to execution.

    Paddle Sports – Assist with delivering high-quality paddling experiences through the oversight of rafting and whitewater and flatwater kayak activities.

    Land Sports – Assist with delivering high-quality experiences on the Whitewater Center’s land-based activities through daily operations and leading front-line staff.

    Youth Programs – Responsible for assisting in the management of summer camp operations and field trips.

    Food & Beverage

    • Front of House – Assist with the daily operation of all food & beverage locations and provide high-quality experiences for guests.
    • Back of House - Assist with the daily culinary operation of all food & beverage locations to provide high-quality experiences for guests.

    Banquet – Work with the catering team to assist in the planning, preparation, execution, and breakdown associated with all events that require catering.

  • College Program Intern

    The Whitewater College Program Intern is an integral part of the team working in a front-line role to accomplish Whitewater’s mission.  The College Program is designed for undergraduate students looking for hospitality experience.  Interns are hourly, full-time seasonal employees who report to an Operations Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Execute the job duties within one or more of the following areas of focus: Guest Services Representative, Land Guide, Raft Guide, Flatwater Guide, Summer Camp Counselor, Bartender, Line Cook, Whitewater Kayak Instructor, Swiftwater Rescue Instructor, or Banquet Staff.
    • Establish clear, open-minded, trustworthy, bias-free, and customer-focused communication to ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment.
    • Maintain accurate knowledge of operating hours, activities, and products offered onsite.

    Activities
    Charlotte

    Deep Water Solo Lifeguards at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) will host our guests while serving the world’s only permanent Deep Water Solo Climbing facility.  The DWS Lifeguard is an on-site, part-time position that reports to the Outdoor Activities Operation Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Ensure the safety of our guests in and around the pool area.
    • Maintain a high level of professionalism while interacting with the public and employees.
    • Effectively communicate and enforce regulations and policies.
    • Work as a team with other lifeguards during special events and daily operations.
    • Respond appropriately to all emergencies.
    • Identify safety issues and communicate to management.

    Requirements

    • Hold a current Lifeguard Certification from an accredited program.

    Overview of Department 

    The Outdoor Activities Department is responsible for leading and supporting experiences in a variety of water and land-based sports. The department also instructs guests through the Whitewater Center’s Outdoor School and Summer Camps. Outdoor Activities employees engage with guests through an assortment of pass activities and help create memorable outdoor experiences.

  • Off Leash Attendant

    The Off Leash (OL) Attendant at the Whitewater Center is responsible for creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all guests. The OL Attendant must provide guests with guidance to best match our products and services with the needs of the guest. The OL Attendant is an on-site, part-time hourly position that reports directly to the Off Leash Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products, and services offered at Whitewater.
    • Communicate with guests in a polite, clear, and confident manner.
    • Ensure all guests and dogs are checked in before entering the off-leash area.
    • Assist in maintaining cleanliness of grounds and disposing of waste.
    • Be open to a variety of job functions, including parking, retail, pass sales, site tours, etc.
    • Check-in guests through the Siriusware software system, assign wrist bands, review the purchased experience, provide directions, and answer any questions.
    • Provide a presence for questions and conflict management as necessary.
    • Inform guests of current food options, drink options, and specials.
    • Prepare for the arrival of large groups to ensure a pleasant and efficient check-in.
    • Actively communicate with all departments to facilitate the best possible experience for each guest.

  • Off Leash Manager

    The Off Leash Manager at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is a key leadership position with a critical role in the fulfillment of the Whitewater Center’s brand promise of delivering high-quality experiences. The Off Leash Manager is part of the Guest Experience team, which serves as the point of contact or concierge for all guests at any time. The Off Leash Manager leads a team of full-time, year-round, and seasonal employees overseeing the Off Leash Activity area. Quality employee recruitment, training, and coaching are critical to the success of this role, along with effective problem solving, and strategic, goal-driven thinking. This position is an on-site, full-time, benefits eligible position that reports to the Operations Manager.

    Responsibilities 

    • Oversee the Off Leash operation as well provide managerial coverage within the Guest Experience department.
    • Support processes and procedures to ensure cleanliness, consistent guest service delivery, and staff productivity.
    • Manage first encounters with guests, and act as a first responder to guest needs and issues.
    • Ensure employees create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all guests and have in-depth knowledge of the organization, products, and services offered.
    • Oversee the operation of various guest services locations and processes including pass sales, gear rentals, equipment storage, security, parking, custodial services, guest feedback, and inquiries as needed.

  • Banquet and Events Coordinator

    The Banquet & Events Coordinator at the Whitewater Center oversees the planning, preparation, execution, and breakdown associated with all programming and events that require space and catering. The catering team provides service for a diverse range of clientele – including, but not limited to, corporate groups, community-based organizations, students, military, weddings, and consumers of public Whitewater events. Successful execution of each event will require effective communication and collaboration with Food & Beverage, Events, and other operational departments onsite. The Banquet & Events Coordinator is a full-time, on-site, benefits-eligible position, supported by a team of hourly catering staff and reports directly to the Events Operations Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Work closely with the kitchen/events staff to ensure precise EO’s.
    • Oversee inventory of all catering supplies and order as needed.
    • Maintain a strong presence onsite during festivals and large group events.
    • Ensure standards for food quality, food presentation, and venue appearance are met.
    • Schedule all room flips, set-up, breakdowns, etc.

The staff, products, and overall experience in the Center’s retail environments are considered a vital extension of the Whitewater brand and represent a unique opportunity to engage with guests.     Flatwater guides at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are responsible for delivering a high-quality experience through kayaking and stand-up-paddleboarding on the Catawba river.  All new guides will be provided with paid training and need no prior experience.  This is a seasonal position that operates from March 2024 through October 2024.  Availability to operate the entire season is not required but is highly preferred.   Flatwater guides are part-time, on-site, and report to the Paddle Sports Manager.

Water Quality Technicians manage these duties combined with constant, diligent monitoring of a wide range of testing data to ensure the water meets standards. Technicians are on-site and can either be hired as full-time, benefits eligible employees or part-time seasonal employees reporting directly to the Water Quality Supervisor.

    • Maintain and perform calibrations on portable testing equipment.

  • Paddlesports Assistant Manager

    The Paddlesports Assistant Manager at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is a key leadership position with a critical role in the delivery of high-quality whitewater paddling experiences. The primary responsibility of the Whitewater Operations Assistant Manager is the oversight of all rafting and kayak activities on the Whitewater Center's Class II-IV whitewater river. This position is also responsible for staff training and recruiting, emergency response, winter programming, and other special projects as assigned. This position is a full-time, on-site, salaried position that reports to the Paddlesports Manager.

     Responsibilities

    • Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance and safety protocols for whitewater paddling experiences.
    • Maintain a logistical framework for both weekly scheduling and capacity planning for rafting operations.
    • Lead a large team in the management of daily whitewater operations, including but not limited to, guest interactions, staff communications, emergency response calls, training, and assessing paddling equipment.
    • Work with the management team to create operational efficiencies for all paddle sport activities.
    • Work with the broader Activities team to deliver high-quality recreational experiences to our customers.

    Requirements

    • A degree in Operations Management, Recreation Management, or a similar field.
    • Prior management experience required.
    • Prior experience guiding rafts in up to class IV whitewater.
    • Familiarity with recreational whitewater kayaking.

    • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

  • Aerial Inspection and Maintenance Technician

    Aerial Inspection and Maintenance Technicians at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are responsible for the construction, inspection, and maintenance of land activities located at the Whitewater Center.  Activities include, but are not limited to, zip lines, high and low ropes elements, continuous belay systems, climbing walls, and belayed jumps.     The Race Assistant at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is a key member in managing the Whitewater Race Series events and is responsible for overseeing participant registration, executing race logistics/production, and reporting on key performance indicators of each event.     Summer Camp Counselors at the Whitewater Center are responsible for providing camper supervision and coordinating group processes while facilitating camp programming in a safe and enjoyable manner. Summer Camp Counselor positions require full-time availability during summer weekdays corresponding with camp sessions. Camp Counselors are on-site and report to the Outdoor School Supervisor.

    **The 2024 Summer Camp program year runs from June 3rd through August 23rd. Part-time or full-time availability through the end of August is preferred.**

    Responsibilities

    • Create a safe, positive, energetic, and enjoyable environment for campers.
    • Lead and participate in activities with campers – including, but not limited to, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, zip lining, ropes courses, flatwater paddling, wilderness survival instruction, and team games.
    • Assist area guides with gear-up and gear-down processes required for adventure activities -Follow all safety and operational procedures as dictated by Outdoor School Management.

    Swiftwater Rescue Instructors at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) provide Swiftwater and flood rescue training to public safety (Fire, EMA, Police) and military teams.     Team Development Facilitators at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) provide challenging activities and insightful questions while leading groups through team development program options. Team Development programs include half and full-day experiences in High and Low Ropes, Wilderness Survival Instruction, and a variety of other tailored experiences.     Trail Technicians at the Whitewater Center are responsible for sustaining and developing the Trail System. The Whitewater Center conserves and maintains 1,300 acres of land in Charlotte, NC with over 30 miles of developed, mixed-use trails. The ability to train and coach staff is critical to the success of this role, as is effective problem solving and strategic thinking. The Climbing Program Supervisor is an on-site, full-time, benefits eligible position that reports to the Land Sport Operations Manager. 

    Responsibilities

    • Responsible for daily operations of all Land Sports activities alongside other Supervisors/Assistant Managers.
    • Manage an efficient operation, demonstrate fiscal awareness, and continuously ensure the proper execution of tasks and utilization of resources.
    • Ensure that the team maintains high safety standards and provides for excellent guest experience.
    • Involvement in basic maintenance and inspections of all activity equipment and structures.
    • Maintain up-to-date skill sets and abilities in all Land areas and provide field support as necessary.
    • Assist events team with climbing competitions.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    • Strong understanding of operational systems for climbing walls.
    • Ability to lead climb, belay, and operate mechanical ascenders, adjustable daisy chains, and ladders.
    • Consistently forerun boulder problems up to V7 and routes up to 5.12 minimum
    • Strong leadership and public speaking skills.
    • Ability to effectively supervise a team.
    • Self-motivated, adaptable, and focused on the guest experience.
    • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
    • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during other Whitewater events as needed.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • A degree in Commercial Recreation, Outdoor Education, or related field.
    • CWI Certification

    • Must be able to work outdoors for sustained periods of time in all weather and environmental conditions. 
    • Must be able to lift and carry at least 75 pounds.

    The Outdoor Activities Department is responsible for leading and supporting experiences in a variety of water and land-based sports. The department also instructs guests through the Whitewater Center’s Outdoor School and Summer Camps. Outdoor Activities employees engage with guests through an assortment of pass activities and help create memorable outdoor experiences.

  • Banquet Supervisor

    The Banquet Supervisor at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) assists in the planning, preparation, execution, and breakdown associated with all programming and events that require space and catering. The catering team provides service for a diverse range of clientele – including, but not limited to, corporate groups, community-based organizations, students, military, weddings, and consumers of public Whitewater events. Successful execution of each event will require effective communication and collaboration with Food & Beverage, Events, Group Sales, and other operational departments onsite. The Banquet Supervisor is a full-time hourly, on-site, benefits-eligible position and reports directly to the catering manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Work closely with the kitchen/group sales staff to ensure precise Event Orders.
    • Assist in inventory oversight of all catering supplies and order as needed.
    • Ensure standards for food quality, food presentation, and venue appearance are met.
    • Execute scheduled room flips, set-up, breakdowns, etc.
    • Ensure space is kept clean and organized before, during and after rental.
    • Develop a thorough understanding of all requirements and expectations for upcoming events.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    The Guest Services Supervisor at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) assists in leading the team of front-line staff responsible for consistently creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all guests. The department provides exceptional customer care and clear communication with guests during the pass sales process, equipment rentals, and the Outfitters retail store. The ability to train and coach staff is critical to the success of this role, as is effective problem solving and strategic thinking.
