The Outdoor School Manager is responsible for overseeing the Whitewater Center summer camps, outdoor education, instruction/certification Programs and staff within the Outdoor School (OS). While supporting the vision and continued expansion of the school, the OS Manager will oversee a team of full-time staff and up to 50 part-time staff.  The OS Manager is a full-time, on-site, benefits eligible position, and reports directly to the Outdoor Activities Director.

 

Responsibilities 

• Daily management of program operations, including but not limited to; engaging customer needs, staff forecasting and scheduling, emergency response call and logistical support. 
• Oversee recruiting, hiring, training, and daily management of all program staff
• Oversee ongoing program development and expansion 
• Organizing and managing both logistical and operational needs for Whitewater Center instruction and certification courses 
• Work directly with the OS Team to ensure all logistical needs are set to ensure program success   
• Other duties as assigned

 

Requirements

• Must be 21 years of age or older 
• Possess a 4-year degree in Outdoor Recreation, Business, or another related field
• Minimum 3 years of experience managing a summer camp program
• Certifications in CPR and First Aid
• Wilderness medicine certifications (preferred)
• Prior experience in teaching outdoor education programs; Wilderness Medicine, Backpacking, Mountain Biking, or other related topics 
• Prior experience in managing overnight camps (preferred)
• Safety-oriented, patient, organized, enthusiastic, and flexible
• Able to communicate clearly and effectively with staff and guests 
• Excellent driving record with no major infractions or unsafe conduct – position occasionally requires driving a 15-passenger van while towing utility trailers of varying sizes
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other Whitewater events as needed

The Wildwoods Attendant at the Whitewater Center is responsible for creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all guests. The Wildwoods Attendant must provide guests with guidance to best match our products and services with the needs of the guest. The Wildwoods Attendant is an on-site, part-time hourly position that reports directly to the Guest Services Manager.

Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products, and services offered at Whitewater.
• Communicate with guests in a polite, clear, and confident manner.
• Be open to a variety of job functions.
• Check-in guests through the Siriusware software system, assign wrist bands, review the purchased experience, provide directions, and answer any questions.
• Ensure all guests are checked in before entering activity areas.
• Assist in maintaining cleanliness of grounds.
• Provide a presence for questions and conflict management as necessary.
• Stay current and be able to inform guests of food options, drink options, and specials.
• Responsibly pour, serve, and sell alcohol following ABC guidelines.
• Prepare for the arrival of large groups to ensure a pleasant and efficient check-in.
• Actively communicate with all departments to facilitate the best possible experience for each guest.

Guest Services manages event production, private groups, retail operations, and all pass sales at the Whitewater Center.

The Events Intern at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is responsible for assisting in the coordination of all public-facing events. Typical events include, but are not limited to, single and multi-day Festivals, Whitewater Race Series events, Whitewater Film Series events, River Jam concerts, Yoga sessions, Adventure Dining, Winter programming, Outpost programming and all other established programming. The Events Intern is a part-time, on-site position and reports directly to the Event and Race Manager.

 

Responsibilities

• Aid in the planning and execution of all public events, ensuring smooth operations and exceptional guest experiences.
• Create engaging event programming that appeals to the target audience and aligns with company objectives.
• Manage race operations including packet pick-ups, trail marking, venue layouts and timing software.
• Actively participate and engage with the running/climbing/biking community in greater Charlotte to stay informed about trends and preferences.
• Handle guest communication promptly and professionally, addressing emails, feedback, and concerns.
• Aid in database management, including data entry, organization, and maintenance of event-related information.
• Assist in the setup and breakdown of all public events.

• Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at an accredited college or university or have graduated from an undergraduate program within the last six months.

Deep Water Solo Lifeguards at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) will host our guests while serving the world’s only permanent Deep Water Solo Climbing facility.  The DWS Lifeguard is an on-site, part-time position that reports to the Outdoor Activities Operation Manager.

Raft guides at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are responsible for delivering a high-quality whitewater rafting experience down the Whitewater Center’s Class II-IV whitewater river.  All new raft guides will be provided with paid training and need no prior experience.  This is a seasonal position that operates from March 2024 through October 2024.  Availability to operate the entire season is not required but is highly preferred.  Raft guides are part-time, on-site, and report to the Paddle Sports Manager.

Must have availability through September 2024.

Sous Chefs at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are responsible for supporting the daily operations of the kitchen by providing professional leadership and direction to all kitchen personnel. The Sous Chef will ensure that all recipes, food preparations, and presentations meet the restaurant’s specifications and quality standards while maintaining a safe, orderly, and sanitized kitchen. During peak times, the Sous Chef may be required to operate as an Expeditor. This position is an on-site, full-time, benefits eligible position that reports to the Executive Chef.

Landscape Technicians at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) work in small crews to ensure an attractively landscaped and carefully maintained facility.  Technicians are on-site and can either be hired as full-time, benefits-eligible employees or part-time employees reporting directly to the Landscaping and Grounds Manager.

Responsibilities

• Develop the Whitewater grounds by maintaining the appearance of hardscapes such as: roads, curbs, and gutters, parking lots, walkways, stairs, fences, retaining walls and stormwater structures.  Also maintaining and improving softscapes such as: turf and ornamental plants, gardens, landscape beds, natural areas, and water retention areas.
• Assist other departments, facility crews and contractors with maintenance and projects onsite.
• Ensure the safety of guests while performing tasks with landscape equipment such as blowers, trimmers, and mowers.
• Work as a member of a small team and individually to complete assigned tasks.

The Facilities Department is responsible for facility maintenance, stormwater management, construction, and landscaping. The department oversees inspections, repairs, maintenance, and safety of the Whitewater Center’s activities and infrastructure.

The Food & Beverage (BOH) Supervisor at Whitewater is responsible for managing back-of-house activities of all food locations at the Whitewater Center. The Food and Beverage operation at the Whitewater Center strives to provide engaging, high-quality experiences for restaurant guests, quick service customers, festival attendees, and catering for private groups and special programs. The BOH Supervisor is on-site and can either be hired as a full-time or part-time, hourly, benefits eligible employee that reports to the Kitchen manager.

• Oversee culinary operation of Whitewater’s food and beverage locations.
• Training of Back-of-House personnel.
• Ingredient control, food production and shift management.
• Ensure quality food presentation.

The Landscape and Grounds Foreman at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is responsible for overseeing and working alongside a team of Landscape Crew Leads and Technicians to ensure the completion of scheduled landscape maintenance and any assigned work orders. Additionally, the Foreman is responsible for ensuring all staff are in compliance with company standards, to include safety, quality, and operations. Water Quality Technicians at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are an integral part of the team who are solely responsible for managing and maintaining the water for the whitewater channels as well as the Deep-Water Solo pool. This is done through the monitoring and general upkeep of multiple complex systems of filtration and chemical injection. Water Quality Technicians manage these duties combined with constant, diligent monitoring of a wide range of testing data to ensure the water meets standards. Technicians are on-site and can either be hired as full-time, benefits eligible employees or part-time seasonal employees reporting directly to the Water Quality Supervisor.

• Maintain and perform calibrations on portable testing equipment.
• Collect samples and perform water sample analysis.

The Paddlesports Assistant Manager at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is a key leadership position with a critical role in the delivery of high-quality whitewater paddling experiences. The primary responsibility of the Whitewater Operations Assistant Manager is the oversight of all rafting and kayak activities on the Whitewater Center's Class II-IV whitewater river. This position is also responsible for staff training and recruiting, emergency response, winter programming, and other special projects as assigned. This position is a full-time, on-site, salaried position that reports to the Paddlesports Manager.

 Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance and safety protocols for whitewater paddling experiences.
• Maintain a logistical framework for both weekly scheduling and capacity planning for rafting operations.
• Lead a large team in the management of daily whitewater operations, including but not limited to, guest interactions, staff communications, emergency response calls, training, and assessing paddling equipment.
• Work with the management team to create operational efficiencies for all paddle sport activities.
• Work with the broader Activities team to deliver high-quality recreational experiences to our customers.

Aerial Inspection and Maintenance Technicians at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are responsible for the construction, inspection, and maintenance of land activities located at the Whitewater Center.  Activities include, but are not limited to, zip lines, high and low ropes elements, continuous belay systems, climbing walls, and belayed jumps. Work is performed year-round in an outdoor environment. Dishwashers at the Whitewater Center are responsible for washing and cleaning tableware, pots, pans, and cooking equipment in a high-volume restaurant environment. Most programs are scheduled for the spring and the fall, so Educators are free and encouraged to explore employment in other departments during the summer months. The Outdoor School Supervisor at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is responsible for oversight of the Educational Adventures (EA), Team Development, and Summer Camp programs within the Outdoor School (OS) while creating a vision to continue the growth and expansion of the school. Prep Cooks at the Whitewater Center are responsible for cooking and preparing a variety of food products according to the Daily Prep List. Prep Cooks make sure the catering and restaurant teams have all the prepared foods they need to execute their shifts. The Race Assistant at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is a key member in managing the Whitewater Race Series events and is responsible for overseeing participant registration, executing race logistics/production, and reporting on key performance indicators of each event. Swiftwater Rescue Instructors at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) provide Swiftwater and flood rescue training to public safety (Fire, EMA, Police) and military teams. This position is responsible for teaching a variety of classes including in-water, nighttime, and raft-based courses. Instructors must convey progressive and best-in-class techniques that enable program participants to save lives in emergency settings. Swiftwater Rescue Instructors are on-site, part-time employees that report to the Instruction team.

• Facilitate Swiftwater, flood and boat-based instruction to groups with an informative and enjoyable approach while proactively managing the inherent risks involved with water rescue.

Team Development Facilitators at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) provide challenging activities and insightful questions while leading groups through team development program options. Team Development programs include half and full-day experiences in High and Low Ropes, Wilderness Survival Instruction, and a variety of other tailored experiences. Paid training is available and required. Recruits must pass a written test and show proficiency in a skills assessment. Event Coordinators at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are responsible for booking and processing all private group events at the facility and helping with the execution of all public events. The Whitewater Center offers a variety of part-time and seasonal positions at the world's premier outdoor center. Line Cooks at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are responsible for cooking and preparing a variety of food products according to specified recipes and guest specifications. Trail Technicians at the Whitewater Center are responsible for sustaining and developing the Trail System. The Whitewater Center conserves and maintains 1,300 acres of land in Charlotte, NC with over 30 miles of developed, mixed-use trails. Responsibilities

• Perform all aspects of trail maintenance and construction as assigned by the Trail Maintenance Manager.
• Responsibilities include building of new segments of mixed-use trail as well as performing rehabilitation and restoration on existing trail.

• Help with the installation of log and rock retainer bars and steps.
• Construct and inspect bridges and other man-made elements.

The Climbing Program Supervisor at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) assists in leading the team of front-line staff responsible for assisting and guiding guests through the Whitewater Center’s land-based activities. The Guest Services Supervisor at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) assists in leading the team of front-line staff responsible for consistently creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all guests. The department provides exceptional customer care and clear communication with guests during the pass sales process, equipment rentals, and the Outfitters retail store. The ability to train and coach staff is critical to the success of this role, as is effective problem solving and strategic thinking. This position is an on-site, full-time, hourly role that reports directly to the Guest Services Manager.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the daily operations of the Guest Services department including opening and closing procedures.
• Responsible for ensuring that the team maintains high communication standards and provides excellent guest service.
• Train, coach, supervise, and advise on scheduling for all employees.
• Primarily field-focused leadership to maintain efficiency and productivity at Guest Service locations.
• Maintain up-to-date skill sets and abilities in activity policies and procedures and provide support as necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Strong leadership, public speaking, and collaboration skills.
• Problem-solving mindset, with a desire to provide a positive guest experience.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to think critically and make decisions independently.
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during other Whitewater events as needed.

Physical Demands

• Must be able to work outdoors for sustained periods of time in all weather and environmental conditions. 
• Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds. 
• Must be able to bend, stand, lean, and kneel on a regular basis and for sustained periods of time.
• Must be able to safely self-transport over uneven terrain or in a confined space.
• Must be able to work in shared spaces with other employees and customers.
• All positions as Whitewater require employees to report and work onsite at Whitewater locations.
