The USNWC is open year-round with peak season dates running from approximately March through October. Our highest volume days tend to be weekends coinciding with our major festivals and other special events. Opportunity for employment exists for those interested in summer, seasonal jobs, those looking for extra part-time work on weekends and evenings, and even those seeking a permanent, full-time position.

The majority of our seasonal positions do not require technical experience in the industry; however, given the frequent, high-volume nature of guest interaction associated with most roles, exceptional communication skills are essential.

If a job description indicates that a position requires a current First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification, please note, the Whitewater Center offers certification courses in-house. There are also opportunities to obtain more advanced safety training.

  • Activities Guide

    Outdoor Activities
    Charlotte
    $15.00 / hour

    Outdoor Activities Guides are the core delivery vehicle for experiences at the Whitewater Center. They serve to promote positive interactions and experiences in a variety of outdoor activities. Positions vary from seasonal to year-round with hours ranging based upon availability and interest. New guides are provided paid training and shadowing opportunities to build skills to operate competently and confidently, previous experience is not required.

    Guiding specialties are divided into 5 categories. Guides can develop skills to work in multiple disciplines or focus in a single activity area. The specialties include Whitewater Rafting, Flatwater Paddling, Deep Water Solo, Mountain Biking, and Ziplines/Ropes Courses. Guides report to the Operations Manager for each specialty.

    Responsibilities 

    • Serve as the resident expert of the facility and the products/services offered 
    • Interact with guests in a positive manner at all times 
    • Maintain a high level of professionalism while interacting with the public and staff 
    • Provide guests with instruction on equipment and any necessary briefings 
    • Answer questions and troubleshoot guest needs 
    • Effectively communicate and enforce regulations and policies 
    • Respond appropriately to all emergencies 
    • Perform safety inspections on activities and equipment daily 
    • Identify safety issues and communicate to management 
    • Engage the chain-of-command as appropriate for assistance  

     

    Requirements  

    • The minimum age requirement is 17 for most specialties 
    • Excellent verbal communication skills 
    • Ability to use sound judgment with safety as a top priority 
    • Ability to take direction and work without immediate supervision 
    • Disposition toward continued learning and improvement 
    • First Aid, CPR & AED, or Lifeguarding Certification may be required

    Overview of Department 

    The Outdoor Activities Department is responsible for leading and supporting experiences in a variety of water and land-based sports. The department also instructs guests through the Whitewater Center’s Outdoor School and Summer Camps. Outdoor Activities employees engage with guests through an assortment of pass activities and help create memorable outdoor experiences.

  • Aerial Inspection and Maintenance Technician

    Outdoor Activities
    Charlotte

    Aerial Inspection and Maintenance Technicians are responsible for the construction, inspection, and maintenance of land activities located at the Whitewater Center.  Activities include, but are not limited to, zip lines, high and low ropes elements, continuous belay systems, climbing walls, and belayed jumps. Work is performed year-round in an outdoor environment. Technicians can either be hired as full-time, benefits-eligible employees or seasonal employees. This position reports directly to the Outdoor Activities Maintenance Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Inspect, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on all elements and structures associated with Land Activities at Whitewater
    • Assist in the construction of new activities – complete courses, individual elements, and/or the remodeling of existing courses
    • Ensure the safety of guests on highly trafficked activities by completing thorough, regular inspections of all courses and systems with strong attention to detail
    • Maintain availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required

     

    Requirements

    • Familiar with quality and safety standards set by the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and other relevant organizations
    • Strong background in working at heights, rigging, ropes course management, carpentry, or other related fields
    • Experience working safely and effectively with hand tools and power tools
    • Ability to contribute to a specialized, team-oriented work environment

     

    Physical Demands

    • Must be able to work outdoors for sustained periods of time under varying weather conditions
    • Must be able to work comfortably and responsibly at heights of up to 100 feet and occasionally in confined spaces
    • Must be able to lift and carry at least 75 pounds over various terrain

  • Dishwasher

    Food & Beverage

    Dishwashers at the Whitewater Center are responsible for washing and cleaning tableware, pots, pans, and cooking equipment in a high-volume restaurant environment. Dishwashers must also keep the dish area and equipment sanitary and organized. This is a part-time, hourly position that reports directly to the Executive Chef.

     Responsibilities

    • Safely clean, organize, and maintain dishes and dish station equipment
    • Load, run, and unload the dish machine
    • Immediately report any functional or mechanical problems to Executive Chef 
    • Bag and haul dish room trash to dumpster at designated times
    • Fill in as needed to ensure a smooth and efficient operation within the kitchen

    Requirements

    • No prior restaurant experience is needed
    • Excellent communication skills are a must
    • Comfortable working in a hot, wet, humid, and loud environment for entire shifts

  • Guest Services Manager

    The Guest Services Manager is a key leadership position with a critical role in the fulfillment of the Whitewater Center’s brand promise of delivering high-quality experiences. Among other responsibilities, the Guest Services Department serves as the point of contact or concierge for all guests at any time. The Guest Services Manager leads a team of full-time, year-round, and seasonal staff. Quality staff recruitment, training, and coaching are critical to the success of this role, along with effective problem solving, and strategic, goal-driven thinking. This position is a full-time, benefits-eligible position that reports to the Director of Operations.

    Responsibilities 

    • Oversee the operation of various guest services locations and processes including pass sales, gear rentals, equipment storage, security, parking, custodial services, guest feedback, and inquiries
    • Support processes and procedures to ensure cleanliness, quality, consistent guest service delivery, and staff productivity
    • Manage first encounters with guests, and act as a first responder to guest needs and issues
    • Maintain an awareness of how the brand is being represented and pursue meeting the brand promise
    • Facilitate interdepartmental communication to coordinate and maintain high-quality guest experiences
    • Coordinate with third-party custodial and security teams

  • Guest Services Representative

    The Guest Services Representative at the Whitewater Center is responsible for creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all guests. The Guest Services Representative must provide guests with guidance to best match our products and services with the needs of the guest. The Guest Services Representative is a part-time hourly position that reports directly to the Guest Services Leads.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products, and services offered at Whitewater
    • Communicate with guests in a polite, clear, and confident manner
    • Be open to a variety of job functions, including parking, retail, pass sales, site tours, etc.

    The Outdoor Activities Operations Manager is a key leadership position in the Outdoor Activities Department with a critical role in the fulfillment of the Whitewater Center’s brand promise of delivering high-quality experiences. The Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing a supervisory team and managing the day to functions of the operation. This position is a full-time, salaried position that reports directly to the Outdoor Activities Director. 

    Responsibilities

    • Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance and safety protocols
    • Maintain a keen awareness of how the brand is being represented and demonstrate a relentless pursuit of meeting the brand promise
    • Execution of processes and procedures to ensure consistency with objectives
    • Manage an efficient operation with a strong fiscal awareness to continuously ensure the proper execution of resources

  • Outdoor Activities Intern

    Outdoor Activities

    The Outdoor Activities Intern is an integral part of the seasonal team at the US National Whitewater Center.  The incumbent will be assigned to one of the three Outdoor Activities Departments (Land Sports, Rafting, or Outdoor School) as their primary assignment.  Outdoor Activities Interns will be responsible for facilitating activities and events at the US National Whitewater Center.  In addition, many opportunities are available to learn about the different facets of the outdoor recreation industry and what it takes to operate aerial parks, rafting centers, and large-scale youth programs.  Whitewater is offering several 10-15-week paid internships within the Activities Department between the dates of May 1 and September 2. Training will be provided in one or more of the following areas: whitewater operations, land sports operations, and/or youth program operations. Interns will report directly to the Outdoor Activities Supervisors for their department.

    Responsibilities

    • Learn and explore all aspects of the US National Whitewater Center through regular Internship Education Sessions including program design, planning, analysis, and evaluation; needs assessment; personnel management; operations; fiscal management; promotions, marketing and communications; regulatory standards; resource identification and risk management
    • Serve as the resident expert of the facility and the products & services offered

  • Swiftwater Rescue Instructor

    Outdoor School
    Charlotte

    Swiftwater Rescue Instructors provide Swiftwater and flood rescue training to public safety (Fire, EMA, Police) and military teams. This position is responsible for teaching a variety of classes including in-water, nighttime and raft-based courses. Instructors must convey progressive and best-in-class techniques that enable program participants to save lives in emergency settings. Swiftwater Rescue Instructors are part-time employees that report to the Outdoor School Director.

    Responsibilities

    • Facilitate Swiftwater, flood and boat-based instruction to groups with an informative and enjoyable approach while proactively managing the inherent risks involved with water rescue
    • Provide constructive and meaningful feedback to students to foster skill development
    • Engage in class planning sessions, utilize student-focused instruction techniques, and develop performance assessments
    • Execute all safety and operational processes involved in Swiftwater rescue instruction for up to Class IV whitewater
    • Practice thorough communication with the paddle sports team and aid where needed to ensure guest service standards and efficient operation across public-facing and instruction programs
    • Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products and services offered by the Whitewater center
    • Maintain availability to work weekdays and weekends 

    Requirements

    • Clear and professional communication skills including public speaking and demonstration
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience guiding or whitewater kayaking in up to class III whitewater
    • Prior experience teaching or facilitating classes
    • Prior experience working in the fire or rescue field preferred
    • Prior participation in Swiftwater classes is required
    • Instructor Course Requirements
      • Whitewater Level I and II Swiftwater and Flood Rescue Class 
      • 5-day Instructor Candidate Course or Shadow Process 
      • Whitewater guide safety check process

  • Whitewater Kayak Coordinator

    Outdoor Activities

    The Whitewater Kayak Coordinator plays a key role in the oversight of scheduling, planning and management of the Whitewater Center’s whitewater kayaking instruction programs. As a member of the paddle sports leadership team, the coordinator will also assist in recruiting new team members, responding to emergency calls, executing winter programming activities, managing day-to-day operations, and project work as assigned. This position is a full-time, hourly role that reports directly to the Kayak Supervisor.

    Responsibilities 

    • Provide whitewater kayak instruction for guests. 
    • Maintain accurate knowledge of all instruction programs and assist guests in the correct booking for their skill level. 
    • Understand and manage the kayak instruction reservation process
    • Assist in the daily management of kayak operations including meeting instructors and guests for instruction. 
    • Management of kayak instructor scheduling. 
    • Assist the Kayak Supervisor with the growth and the development of paddle sports instruction programming.  

     Preferred Qualifications 

    • Prior experience working within the paddlesports industry in an operations or logistics role. 
    • A minimum of 2 years of class iii kayak instruction experience and/or an ACA Level 4 Kayak Instructor Certification.
    • Current ACA Swiftwater Rescue Certification
    • Excellent communication and guest interaction skills. 
    • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office software suite.
    • Current First Aid and CPR certifications.

    Physical Demands

    • Must be able to teach kayak lessons comfortably in class III whitewater. 
    • Ability to lift 75 pounds.
    • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
    • Ability to walk and ride, independently, up to a mile on uneven terrain.

  • Whitewater Kayak Instructor

    Whitewater Kayak Instructors at the Whitewater Center are core members of the paddle sports team. Teaching students from a variety of demographics in private, group, and multi-day settings, Instructors will impart efficient techniques and convey their passion for the sport. Whitewater Kayak Instructors are seasonal employees and report directly to the WW Kayak Supervisor.

    Responsibilities

    • Facilitate whitewater kayak instruction for individuals and small groups with an informative and enjoyable approach while proactively managing the inherent risks involved with whitewater activities
    • Provide constructive, meaningful feedback to students in order to foster skill acquisition and long-term paddler development
    • Utilize differentiated, student-centered instruction techniques, exercise useful and purposeful practices, engage in instructional session planning, and develop performance assessments
    • Execute all safety and operational processes involved in kayak instruction for the Class II-IV artificial whitewater course
    • Practice thorough communication with the paddle sports team, and aid where needed to ensure guest service standards and efficient operation
    • Continue to improve and develop personally as a whitewater paddler
    • Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products, and services offered by the Whitewater Center
    • Maintain availability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required

    Requirements 

    • Energetic individual with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally
    • A minimum of 2 years of experience working for a whitewater outfitter within a kayak instruction program, a guiding program, or another similar experience
    • Current First Aid, CPR & AED Certification – courses are offered by the Whitewater Center
    • ACA Whitewater Kayak Instructor certification preferred but not required

  • Land Sport Operations Supervisor

    The Land Sport Operations Supervisor is a key leadership position with a critical role in the fulfillment of the Whitewater Center brand’s promise of delivering high quality, active experiences. The Land Sport Operations Supervisor assists in leading the team of front-line staff responsible for assisting and guiding guests through the Whitewater Center’s land-based activities. The ability to train and coach staff is critical to the success of this role, as is effective problem solving and strategic thinking. The Land Sport Operations Supervisor is a full-time, benefits-eligible, on-site position that reports to the Land Sport Operations Manager.

    Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for daily operations of all Land Sports activities alongside other Supervisors/Assistant Managers.
    • Manage an efficient operation, demonstrate fiscal awareness, and continuously ensure the proper execution of tasks and utilization of resources.
    • Ensure that the team maintains high safety standards and provides an excellent guest experience.
    • Involvement in basic maintenance and inspections on all activity equipment and structures.
    • Maintain up-to-date skill sets and abilities in all Land areas and provide field support as necessary.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements:

    • Strong understanding of operational systems for low/high challenge courses and climbing walls.
    • Strong leadership and public speaking skills.
    • Ability to effectively supervise a team
    • Self-motivated, adaptable, and focused on the guest experience.

    • A degree in Commercial Recreation, Outdoor Education or related field is preferred.
