  • Retail Manager

    The Retail Manager at the Whitewater Center is responsible for operating a 5,000 square foot retail operation. The staff, products, and overall experience in the Center’s retail environments are considered a vital extension of the Whitewater brand and represent a unique opportunity to engage with guests. The Retail Manager is primarily responsible for maintaining and seeking opportunities for growth in an outdoor retail environment tailored to represent the mission, values, and initiatives of the organization. The Retail Manager is an on-site, full-time, benefits eligible role who reports to the Director of Operations.

    Responsibilities

    • Promote an active, outdoor lifestyle by incorporating an array of relevant brands and products in the store.
    • Excellent customer service.
    • Collaborate with Guest Services team to engage guests in a variety of manners including serving as an information hub, facilitating pass sales, and serving as an overall ambassador for the Whitewater Center.
    • Collaborate with the Marketing team to assure the delivery of a consistent brand experience to the guest.
    • Develop and maintain a product knowledgeable retail team.
    • Develop strategies to effectively immerse guests into outdoor industry trends and products using approaches inside and outside of the store footprint.
    • Monitor inventory and evaluate finances to improve sales and profit performance.
    • Establish clear movement and flow through the floor space while employing merchandising methods that create an enjoyable shopping experience.
    • Build upon and maintain strong, positive relationships with both vendors and guests.
    • Constantly explore the latest industry products, technology, and trends while seeking out and capitalizing on new opportunities.

    Requirements

    • 5+ years of relevant retail operations experience and market knowledge.
    • 3+ years of retail management experience.

    • Extensive retail experience with technical outdoor gear and lifestyle apparel.
    • Product purchasing experience across a wide variety of product lines.
    • Thorough understanding and experience with visual merchandising.

Guest Services manages event production, private groups, retail operations, and all pass sales at the Whitewater Center.

  • Business Development Coordinator

    The Business Development Coordinator at the Whitewater Center is responsible for developing and maintaining key relationships with businesses, schools, not-for-profits, and other entities. The Business Development Coordinator is a salaried, on-site, benefits eligible position that reports directly to the Director of Operations.

    Responsibilities

    • Maintain appropriate engagement tracking systems.
    • Organize and execute acquisition strategies to acquire new clients.
    • Develop and execute a semi-annual business development/recruiting plan to drive desired results.
    • Review RPF opportunities and submit applications as necessary.
    • Attending events on behalf of Whitewater as needed.
    • Perform needs assessments and develop sales proposals and presentations.
    • Monitor production and business remits of existing client base.
    • Leverage resources from the group sales team to deliver desired outcomes.

  • Flatwater Guide

    Flatwater guides at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are responsible for delivering a high-quality experience through kayaking and stand-up-paddleboarding on the Catawba river.  All new guides will be provided with paid training and need no prior experience.  This is a seasonal position that operates from March 2024 through October 2024.  Availability to operate the entire season is not required but is highly preferred.   Flatwater guides are part-time, on-site, and report to the Paddle Sports Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Serve as the resident expert of the facility and the products/services offered.
    • Interact with guests in a positive manner at all times.
    • Maintain a high level of professionalism while interacting with the public and employees. 
    • Provide guests with instruction on equipment and any necessary briefings. 
    • Answer questions and troubleshoot guest needs. 
    • Effectively communicate and enforce regulations and policies. 
    • Respond appropriately to all emergencies. 
    • Perform safety inspections on activities and equipment daily.
    • Identify safety issues and communicate to management. 
    • Engage the chain-of-command as appropriate for assistance.

    Requirements

    • The minimum age requirement is 16 years of age.
    • First Aid, CPR & AED certification required.
    • Must be comfortable with working in and around water.
    • Excellent verbal communication skills.

  • Raft Guide

  • Land Guide

    Land Guides at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are responsible for assisting and guiding guests through the Whitewater Center’s land-based activities.  This includes delivering a high-quality experience while operating zip-lines, rock climbing, ropes courses, jumps and mountain biking.  All new land guides will be provided with paid training and need no prior experience.  Land guides are part-time, on-site, and report to the Land Sport Operation Manager.

  • Landscape Technician

    Landscape Technicians at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) work in small crews to ensure an attractively landscaped and carefully maintained facility.  Technicians are on-site and can either be hired as full-time, benefits-eligible employees or part-time employees reporting directly to the Landscaping and Grounds Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop the Whitewater grounds by maintaining the appearance of hardscapes such as: roads, curbs, and gutters, parking lots, walkways, stairs, fences, retaining walls and stormwater structures.  Also maintaining and improving softscapes such as: turf and ornamental plants, gardens, landscape beds, natural areas, and water retention areas.
    • Assist other departments, facility crews and contractors with maintenance and projects onsite.
    • Ensure the safety of guests while performing tasks with landscape equipment such as blowers, trimmers, and mowers.
    • Work as a member of a small team and individually to complete assigned tasks.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    • Experience in mowing and landscape maintenance.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

  • Trail Systems Supervisor

    The Trail Systems Supervisor at the Whitewater Center is responsible for sustaining and developing the trail system. The Whitewater Center conserves and maintains 1,300 acres of land in Charlotte, NC with over 50 miles of developed, mixed-use trails. This is an on-site, full-time, hourly, benefits eligible, position that reports directly to the Facilities Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Perform all aspects of trail maintenance and construction as assigned by the Facilities Manager.
    • Schedule, coordinate, supervise, and lead projects and crews.
    • Motivate and develop a team of 3-5 employees.
    • Support the hiring process and on-boarding of new employees.
    • Manage and prioritize assigned work orders.
    • Work closely with the Facilities Administrator on a variety of daily and weekly tasks to meet administrative requirements.
    • Lead the development of building new segments of mixed-use trail, as well as performing rehabilitation and restoration on existing trail.
    • Clean, repair, and construct drainage systems.
    • Supervise and help with the installation of log and rock retainer bars and steps.
    • Supervise the build and inspection process for bridges and other man-made elements.
    • Maintain trail features such as causeways, riprap and rock armor structures, and cribbing trail tread.
    • Comply with department and company policies including standards for work quality, safety, and operations.
    • Regularly assist the Race Manager and Events Team with the planning, preparation, and execution of trail races and events.
    • Assist other teams with projects and assignments as needed.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    • Experience in trail maintenance and conservation.
    • Experience managing trail building teams of 3-5 employees.
    • Proficiency working with a variety of trade tools – shovels, picks, McLeods, rakes, axes, Pulaskis, various types of saws (e.g., pole, hand etc.), loppers, chisels, sledgehammers, single jacks, rock bars, measuring tapes, levels, squares, ropes, etc.
    • Proficiency operating and training on fuel powered machinery (chainsaws, walk behind, skid steer, etc.)
    • Ability to read and interpret documents with strong attention to detail – e.g., safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and other manuals.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
    • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during other Whitewater events as needed.

  • Food & Beverage Back of House Supervisor

    The Food & Beverage (BOH) Supervisor at Whitewater is responsible for managing back-of-house activities of all food locations at the Whitewater Center. The Food and Beverage operation at the Whitewater Center strives to provide engaging, high-quality experiences for restaurant guests, quick service customers, festival attendees, and catering for private groups and special programs. The BOH Supervisor is on-site and can either be hired as a full-time or part-time, hourly, benefits eligible employee that reports to the Kitchen manager.

    • Oversee culinary operation of Whitewater’s food and beverage locations.

    • Ingredient control, food production and shift management.

    The Landscape and Grounds Supervisor at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is responsible for overseeing and working alongside a team of Landscape Crew Leads and Technicians to ensure the completion of scheduled landscape maintenance and assigned work orders in compliance with company standards, to include safety, quality, and operations.     Responsibilities

  • Water Quality Technician

    Water Quality Technicians at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) are an integral part of the team who are solely responsible for managing and maintaining the water for the whitewater channels as well as the Deep-Water Solo pool. This is done through the monitoring and general upkeep of multiple complex systems of filtration and chemical injection. Water Quality Technicians manage these duties combined with constant, diligent monitoring of a wide range of testing data to ensure the water meets standards. Technicians are on-site and can either be hired as full-time, benefits eligible employees or part-time seasonal employees reporting directly to the Water Quality Supervisor.

     Responsibilities

    • Maintain and perform calibrations on portable testing equipment.
    • Collect samples and perform water sample analysis.

  • Paddlesports Assistant Manager

    The Paddlesports Assistant Manager at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is a key leadership position with a critical role in the delivery of high-quality whitewater paddling experiences. The primary responsibility of the Whitewater Operations Assistant Manager is the oversight of all rafting and kayak activities on the Whitewater Center's Class II-IV whitewater river. This position is also responsible for staff training and recruiting, emergency response, winter programming, and other special projects as assigned.      Responsibilities

    • Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance and safety protocols for whitewater paddling experiences.
    • Maintain a logistical framework for both weekly scheduling and capacity planning for rafting operations.
    • Lead a large team in the management of daily whitewater operations, including but not limited to, guest interactions, staff communications, emergency response calls, training, and assessing paddling equipment.
    • Work with the management team to create operational efficiencies for all paddle sport activities.
    • Work with the broader Activities team to deliver high-quality recreational experiences to our customers.

    Requirements

    • A degree in Operations Management, Recreation Management, or a similar field.
    • Prior management experience required.
    • Prior experience guiding rafts in up to class IV whitewater.
    • Familiarity with recreational whitewater kayaking.

    • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

    Prep Cooks at the Whitewater Center are responsible for cooking and preparing a variety of food products according to the Daily Prep List. Prep Cooks make sure the catering and restaurant teams have all the prepared foods they need to execute their shifts.     The Race Assistant at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) is a key member in managing the Whitewater Race Series events and is responsible for overseeing participant registration, executing race logistics/production, and reporting on key performance indicators of each event.     Summer Camp Counselors at the Whitewater Center are responsible for providing camper supervision and coordinating group processes while facilitating camp programming in a safe and enjoyable manner.     Swiftwater Rescue Instructors at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) provide Swiftwater and flood rescue training to public safety (Fire, EMA, Police) and military teams. This position is responsible for teaching a variety of classes including in-water, nighttime, and raft-based courses. Instructors must convey progressive and best-in-class techniques that enable program participants to save lives in emergency settings. Swiftwater Rescue Instructors are on-site, part-time employees that report to the Instruction team.

    • Facilitate Swiftwater, flood and boat-based instruction to groups with an informative and enjoyable approach while proactively managing the inherent risks involved with water rescue.

    Team Development Facilitators at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) provide challenging activities and insightful questions while leading groups through team development program options. Team Development programs include half and full-day experiences in High and Low Ropes, Wilderness Survival Instruction, and a variety of other tailored experiences. Paid training is available and required. Recruits must pass a written test and show proficiency in a skills assessment. This is an on-site, part-time, seasonal position that reports to the Land Sports Operations Manager.

  • Whitewater Kayak Instructor

    Whitewater Kayak Instructors at the Whitewater Center are core members of the paddle sports team. Teaching students from a variety of demographics in private, group, and multi-day settings, Instructors will impart efficient techniques and convey their passion for the sport. Whitewater Kayak Instructors are part-time, seasonal, hourly employees and report directly to the Paddlesports Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Facilitate whitewater kayak instruction for individuals and small groups with an informative and enjoyable approach while proactively managing the inherent risks involved with whitewater activities.
    • Provide constructive, meaningful feedback to students in order to foster skill acquisition and long-term paddler development.
    • Utilize differentiated, student-centered instruction techniques, exercise useful and purposeful practices, engage in instructional session planning, and develop performance assessments.
    • Execute all safety and operational processes involved in kayak instruction for the Class II-IV artificial whitewater course.
    • Practice thorough communication with the paddle sports team, and aid where needed to ensure guest service standards and efficient operation.
    • Continue to improve and develop personally as a whitewater paddler.
    • Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products, and services offered by the Whitewater Center.

    Requirements 

    • A minimum of 2 years of experience working for a whitewater outfitter within a kayak instruction program, a guiding program, or another similar experience.
    • Current First Aid, CPR & AED Certification – courses are offered by the Whitewater Center.
    • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during other Whitewater events as needed.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • ACA Whitewater Kayak Instructor certification preferred.

Line Cooks are on-site, and can either be hired as full-time hourly, benefits eligible employees or part-time hourly employees reporting directly to the Executive Chef. 

    Responsibilities

    • Safely prepare a variety of food products using various kitchen equipment including, but not limited to, broilers, ovens, grills, fryers, and sharp knives.
    • Understand and consistently comply with portion sizes and recipe specifications as described on recipe cards.
    • Maintain a clean and sanitary workstation including tables, shelves, walls, grills, broilers, fryers, pasta cookers, sauté burners, convection oven, flat top range, and refrigeration equipment.
    • Operate and read a kitchen display system to create dishes according to guest specifications.
    • Be able to fill in as needed to ensure smooth and efficient operation within the kitchen.

  • Trail Maintenance Technician

    Trail Technicians at the Whitewater Center are responsible for sustaining and developing the Trail System. The Whitewater Center conserves and maintains 1,300 acres of land in Charlotte, NC with over 30 miles of developed, mixed-use trails. This is an on-site, full-time, hourly, benefits eligible position that reports directly to the Trail Maintenance Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Perform all aspects of trail maintenance and construction as assigned by the Trail Maintenance Manager.
    • Responsibilities include building of new segments of mixed-use trail as well as performing rehabilitation and restoration on existing trail.
    • Clean, repair, and construct drainage systems
    • Help with the installation of log and rock retainer bars and steps.
    • Construct and inspect bridges and other man-made elements.
    • Maintain trail features such as causeways, riprap and rock armor structures, and cribbing trail tread.

    • Regularly assist the Race Manager and Events team with the planning, preparation, and execution of trail races and events.

    • Responsible for daily operations of all Land Sports activities alongside other Supervisors/Assistant Managers.
    • Manage an efficient operation, demonstrate fiscal awareness, and continuously ensure the proper execution of tasks and utilization of resources.
    • Ensure that the team maintains high safety standards and provides for excellent guest experience.
    • Involvement in basic maintenance and inspections of all activity equipment and structures.
    • Maintain up-to-date skill sets and abilities in all Land areas and provide field support as necessary.
    • Assist events team with climbing competitions.

    Requirements

    • Strong understanding of operational systems for climbing walls.
    • Ability to lead climb, belay, and operate mechanical ascenders, adjustable daisy chains, and ladders.
    • Consistently forerun boulder problems up to V7 and routes up to 5.12 minimum
    • Strong leadership and public speaking skills.
    • Ability to effectively supervise a team.
    • Self-motivated, adaptable, and focused on the guest experience.
    • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

    • A degree in Commercial Recreation, Outdoor Education, or related field.
