At North Cascades Institute (NCI), we take pride in serving high quality and nourishing meals to our program participants, staff and guests. To help maintain and grow this standard, NCI is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the role as the Food Service Supervisor, who provides leadership within the kitchen environment, supports the Food Service Manager and plays a key role in maintaining the exceptional standard of meal service that the Institute is known for. This role models professionalism and maintains high quality standards established by the Food Service Manager to their kitchen team. As a leader in the kitchen, the Food Service Supervisor is able to develop and maintain an environment of trust, diversity, and inclusion within the kitchen team. This position is based out of the Institute’s field campus in North Cascades National Park at the Institute’s Environmental Learning Center (ELC). The jobsite is in a remote National Park which can experience snow-covered roads, avalanches, wildfire, smoke, wild animals, and flooding. This is a regular, full-time position supervised by the Food Service Manager.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum of two years of professional food service experience.
  • Two years or more of supervisory experience.
  • Excellent ability to delegate responsibilities while maintaining organizational control of operations.
  • Ability to accommodate a varied work schedule.
  • Ability to work with diverse or underrepresented populations.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Basic first aid training.
  • Strong IT skills, including computer skills and experience with spreadsheets, common software and Microsoft Office. 
  • Valid Washington State Food Handlers Permit and thorough knowledge of food safety practices.
  • Final offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check that may include employment history, national criminal background check, national sex offender registry search and a driving history check.

Preferred

  • Experience in the hospitality industry.
  • Has the skills required to operate in avalanche terrain.
  • Fluency in Spanish.

Responsibilities

Operations

  • Prepares meals on a daily basis, served buffet-style. Works together with the Food Service Manager to ensure efficient and high-quality food service and unified direction in leadership.
  • Provides administrative support as necessary to the Food Service Manager through inventory management, placing food orders, and coding invoices for payment approval.
  • In conjunction with Food Service Manager, trains kitchen staff for safe, efficient use of kitchen equipment, appliances, and essential cooking tools.
  • Maintains all health and food safety standards and procedures consistent with applicable food safety regulations. Assists in the development of ongoing health and food safety training programs and ensures that all employees maintain necessary credentials.
  • Ensure that kitchen operation activities remain on time and within budget.
  • Resolves customer complaints, disputes or grievances while providing excellent customer service and sensitivity to participant needs.
  • Actively participates in the recycling program, composting and use of green materials.

Supervision

  • Regularly meets with the Food Service Manager and supervises all Cook positions.
  • Supervises, schedules and approves payroll for supervisees.
  • Performs performance reviews for supervisees.
  • Maintains communication with managers, staff, vendors and contractors to ensure proper operations.
  • Is a member of the Hiring Team for all kitchen positions.
  • Overall responsible for the cleanliness and organization in the kitchen, dining hall, and storage areas.
  • Regularly meets with the Food Service Manager and supervises all Cook positions.

Other

  • Collaborates with the Food Service Manager to relay any issues with the Institute’s participant information database, Salesforce or the communication of food service information from NCI staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Food Service Manager.

Compensation

This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position subject to a winter furlough (unpaid) of one to two months. The pay rate is $23.00-$25.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. This position is subject to a $1 increase for utilizing non-NCI housing. The job location for this position is at the Environmental Learning Center.

  • Sick Leave – 8 hours per month.
  • Vacation Leave – 10 days per year one. Positions with furloughs may accrue less than 10 days.
  • Holiday Leave – 12 days maximum per year.
  • Service Days – 2 days per year.
  • Other paid time-off such as family leave, pregnancy leave, bereavement leave, etc.
  • Medical/dental insurance, long and short-term disability insurance, tax-deferred annuity, and contribution retirement plan.
  • Ability to participate in Institute pro deals.
  • Yearly stipend to participate in Institute programs.

Benefits are prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week.
