  • Challenge Course & Basecamp Assistant Manager

    POSTION DESCRIPTION

    This position will assist in the operation of Challenge Course and Basecamp for AMB West Philanthropies, West Creek Ranch and Mountain Sky Guest Ranch. The primary role is facilitation of Challenge Course activities. Operations Coordinator will plan and deliver adventure activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to participants of all ages and abilities. He or she will also support the property management at Basecamp facilities use which includes the orientation and oversight of user groups along with the general maintenance of grounds and buildings. (Note: If skill set of applicant is appropriate, oversite of basecamp may become primary responsibility.)

    Must have good communication skills, be a positive team player with an aptitude for managing risk. Must display sound judgment and ability to work under pressure.

    Schedule is full time up to 50 hours/week, with varying work weeks starting at the end of April through October. Weekend and overnight availability up to 3 nights per week to be on call is necessary with long days expected especially throughout June, July and August. Housing and shift meals are available. This position reports to Challenge Course/Basecamp Manager and has a close working relationship with the management teams from West Creek Ranch Mountain Sky and Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation.

    ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    · Follow standard and local operating procedures for all aspects of the challenge course

    · Provide peer mentorship for advancing Challenge Course facilitators (Depending on experience)

    · Know and follow emergency response procedures with the ability to lead response in an emergency situation

    · Assist in oversight of equipment use, maintain accurate inventories, and resupply

    · Inspection, maintenance and upkeep of the challenge course, grounds, equipment and facilities

    · Identify and report potential risks/ hazards related to the operation

    · Ensure first aid equipment is available and in good repair

    · Assist in the set-up and implementation of other activities as assigned (including new self-guided orienteering course)

    · Assist in maintenance and oversight of basecamp property grounds and buildings

    · Provide oversite of maintenance or landscaping with peers

    · Assist with realignment and re-tasking of Basecamp facilities to best meet nonprofit use

    · Maintain oversight with Basecamp user groups while they are on-site ensuring a high-quality experience

    · Host site visits for potential users and assist with identification of new users

    · Work with other staff to create a safe, fun and enjoyable workplace

    QUALIFICATIONS

    · Excellent leadership and facilitation skills required

    · Ability to design curriculum to specific groups needs

    · Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences

    · Prior challenge course facilitation experience required

    · Level 1 or 2 challenge course practitioner preferred (training maybe provided by MSGR and AMBFO)

    · Current certifications in First Aid and CPR, WFR or WFA preferred

    · Strong organizational skills and great attention to detail

    · Able to assess and diffuse difficult situations

    · Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other management staff, employees, volunteers and the general public

    · Ability to work effectively under pressure to deliver results in a fast-paced environment

    · Be in excellent physical health and able ability to handle physical aspects of operating equipment, conducting safety rescues, assisting participants

    Position Description Summary

    The AMB West Challenge Course located on Mountain Sky Guest Ranch in Montana was developed in 2015 to serve the needs of the guest ranch and its surrounding community. Built by Project Adventure, the Challenge Course was designed to support independent exploration with a continuous belay aerial course, as well as experiential learning and teambuilding with 8 other high ropes elements and 4 low ropes elements. Our staff create experiences that cater to the needs of each group it serves. Whether it’s leadership teams from West Creek Ranch looking for connection, guests from Mountain Sky seeking adventure or local non-profits learning about teamwork, we move through the day with safety and fun as our top priorities.

    AMB West Basecamp located two miles up the road from the Challenge Course provides space for non-profit partners to bring and carry out their own programming. The foundation’s Montana leadership team is looking for a Challenge Course and Basecamp Manager to support these efforts.

    As a key member of the program management team the Challenge Course and Basecamp Manager will oversee operations and maintenance of the AMB West Challenge Course and Basecamp for Mountain Sky Guest Ranch, West Creek Ranch and AMB West Community Fund Partners.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    This role is responsible for implementation and supervision of all Challenge Course activities including facilities, staff and procedures. The Manager will ensure delivery of activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to participants. This role will also assist in oversight of the Basecamp facilities, including coordination and managing of user groups, maintenance of grounds, resources and buildings, and communications. This is an in-person position that requires on-call, overnight shifts and will work virtually and at the Livingston based foundation office in the off-season. Housing is provided..

    Specific roles and responsibilities include:

    • Ensure compliance of all local and national standard operating procedures, safety practices and policies for all aspects of the Challenge Course
    • Update oversee emergency response procedures, first aid & AED (automated external defibrillator)
    • Oversee equipment use, maintain accurate inventories, and resupply
    • Manage seasonal staff, including 1 assistant manager, 2 direct reports and coordinating with MSGR & West Creek Ranch on overlapping management responsibilities of 3-5 employees
    • Schedule staff in collaboration with Mountain Sky and West Creek Management
    • Provide orientation and training on Local Operating Procedures to course facilitators
    • Coordinate advanced and technical trainings with third-party contractors
    • Ensure facilitators are working within their expected level of competency provided through trainings
    • Incorporate training opportunities (beyond technical Challenge Course training) for facilitators that strengthen the guest experience and equip facilitators with tools to interact with diverse individuals (examples: ACEs (adverse childhood experiences), trauma-informed, social emotional learning approaches, etc.)
    • Perform day-to-day administrative tasks such as maintaining files and processing paperwork
    • Correspond with user groups pre and post experience
    • Collect and report on usage and feedback from groups to inform program needs
    • Monitor the facilities to ensure that they remain safe, secure, and well-maintained
    • Assist with the communications and marketing of the facilities
    • Participate in AMBFF staff meetings, retreats, and other staff engagements

    Qualifications, Education and Experience Requirements

    • Course Manager or Level 2 certification from a Professional Vendor Member of the Association for Challenge Course Technology, or ability to obtain certification preferred
    • Documented Challenge Course experience, including training and supervising staff
    • CPR/First Aid/AED (minimum) Wilderness First Responder or EMT (Preferred)
    • Ability to travel to/from Challenge Course and Basecamp during the season (this is an in-person position) and work virtually and in the Livingston based foundation office in the off-season
    • Valid Driver’s License and current insurance
    • Desired experience with facilities maintenance, property management
    • Desired experience maintaining a budget

    HORSE OPERATIONS

    The ideal wrangler candidate will demonstrate both excellent customer service and strong horsemanship skills. Wranglers will lead rides on 17,000 private acres, in addition to the neighboring Gallatin National Forest. Trail rides aren’t your typical nose-to-tail walking dude rides; o​ur guests stay for a week at a time, and they come to ride! We lead walk, trot, and lope rides, all with a heavy instruction component. A riding video will be required from applicants not able to join us for a live riding interview, but it is not necessary to submit the video with your initial application.  Please note that personal horses may be approved but outside dogs are not allowed. 3 – 7 month positions available. Dates are mid May to August 22 at minimum, with a start date as early as April 1 and an end date as late as October 31.

    The Farm Hand must have a strong work ethic, self-motivated, detail-oriented and a willingness to work a varied work schedule based on time of year.  The position is a crucial component to the Land & Livestock team and reports to the Farming Manager. Looking for someone mechanically inclined with experience working with livestock operations, knowledgeable with irrigation systems including hand line and wheel line, and ability to successfully maneuver haying equipment including but not limited to tractor, baler, rake, swather, and hauling. Additional responsibilities include but not limited to building, welding, and repairing of equipment and fences, and maintenance of ATV’s, trucks, and ranch equipment. The position will run from May 15-Sept 15, 2024, with some flexibility on start and end dates.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    • Irrigating crop fields and livestock pastures utilizing a variety of techniques including wheel lines, reel guns, and center pivots.
    • Maintaining and repair irrigation equipment.
    • Operating tractors and other implements including rake, baler, and manure spreader.
    • Operating pickup trucks, skid steers, dump trucks and pulling trailers.
    • Operating a variety of power tools including chainsaw, pressure washer, and post-pounder.
    • Some basic equipment and vehicle maintenance.
    • Constructing new fence, repairing existing fence and installing/moving temporary electric fence.
    • Assist the Livestock Manager moving and handling livestock.
    • Organize and maintain a clean work area and take responsibility for orderliness of tools and equipment.

    Qualifications

    • Previous farm/ranch work preferred.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license and experience with operating 4-wheeler, side-by-side off-road.
    • Must be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments, i.e., rain, heat, sun, cold.

    • Must be able to maintain focus during dangerous tasks.

  • Noxious Weed Specialist

    LAND AND LIVESTOCK

    The Noxious Weed Specialist must be independent, organized, self-motivated, flexible, and detailed.  This position is a crucial component to the Land & Livestock team and reports to the Director of Land, Livestock & Conservation. You will utilize a variety of techniques including chemical and mechanical methods to manage unwanted or nuisance vegetation. The ranch has implemented a long-term weed control management plan to reduce impacts on native plants from noxious weeds.  The ideal candidate will have an interest in invasive plant management, native plant habitat restoration, or plant science.  The position will run from June 1-August 28, 2024, with some flexibility on start and end dates.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    • Implementing a weed management program across property. Main duties will include herbicide applications and other methods of vegetation management under the supervision of a certified applicator.
    • Perform various work tasks involved in mapping and controlling noxious weeds; hiking, surveying, mapping, plant identification, hand pulling weeds, spraying weeds, in a front country and backcountry setting.
    • Position requires chemical applications and the need to mix chemicals, spray weeds with herbicide, rinse, and clean application devices, follow herbicide labels and use personal protective equipment.
    • Document spray targets, tracks, and work tasks using a tablet and mapping software.
    • Assist in other ranch duties as assigned.
    • Organize and maintain a clean work area and take responsibility for orderliness of tools and equipment.
    • Assist the Land & Livestock team with other ranch labor, i.e., fence maintenance, operating tractors, irrigation, equipment maintenance.

    Qualifications

    • Previous farm/ranch work preferred.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Experience with herbicides preferred; applicator’s license or willingness to train a plus.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license and experience with operating 4-wheeler, side-by-side off-road.

    Mountain Sky’s Wellness Center was designed to add another dimension and greater balance to our ranch activities. In addition to scheduled massages and yoga classes, the Mountain Sky Wellness Center features a heated outdoor pool, indoor gym, yoga studio, cedar sauna, steam room, outdoor hot tub, and grotto for guests to indulge in.
