The Employee Experience

Gabi - Summer Work and Travel

"I do have some advice for packing: PACK LIGHT AND BRING WARM CLOTHES! You don't really need a lot of clothes. Oh, and it would also be helpful to bring a pair of black pants for work ( trust me, it's better to be safe and have one). It was challenging sharing the room with people I didn't know and people from different parts of the world, but that only made the experience more unique and amazing. The most important advice I can give you is to make the best from this unique experience, to take the best from the people you're gonna meet and to enjoy every single day because you are gonna miss it like crazy when you leave :)"

Vikte, Summer Work and Travel

"My greatest summer in USA

My name is Vikte (well a lot of people in America called me Vicki), I’m from Lithuania, a little and awesome country in Eastern Europe. Back here in my country, I’m studying criminal law, working, and enjoying life.

So, what brought me to the United States? A big dream to see America. Honestly, I was dreaming about coming to States for about 6 years and finally, I did it! I participated in Work and Travel USA program to make my dream come true. I’ve got a job offer from Mission Point Resort, packed my bags, jumped to a plane and had the longest trip in my life. It took 3 days for me to get to the Island! :D

But when I got there it took like 2 minutes to fell in love with the Island. Lake, horses, old-style houses – trust me, it’s amazing…

At Mission Point, I worked as a hostess in Bistro on the Greens. I just loved my job! In the beginning, I was a little scared, but soon I got used to all the procedures and other stuff. I loved that I need to communicate to customers (it helped a lot to improve my English skills), also I met a lot of wonderful people, and the best thing - I worked outside, so I didn’t have any problems with my tan :D I lived in a Quorum. Housing at Mission Point is fine, everything is clean. The best thing that we’ve got wifi in our rooms! :D

I’ve learned a lot from all of this. First of all, now I have much more self-esteem. I realized, that I can travel all by myself, I can deal with a lot of difficult situations which I had in traveling, my English is better, plus I have a lot of awesome new friends all around the world!

I hope that I will be able to come back to Mackinac Island one day, working there changed all my life for good. And just in one season!"
