Waterfront Counselor Responsibilities: Supervises swimming activities at the aquatics facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.

  • Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces regulations and water safety policies.
  • Administers first aid in the event of injury rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.
  • Inspects facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.
  • Instructs or assists classes in fundamentals of swimming as needed.
  • Effectively supervise all water activities and be prepared to enact lifesaving techniques using the Eagle Island Emergency Action Plan 
  • Ensure safety rules and procedures are followed
  • Maintain daily log (tracking weather, buddy checks for swimming, numbers of swimmers, and lifeguard rotations)

Camper supervision

  • Foster a spirit of cooperation and team building within the small group
  • Be aware of the ongoing medical needs of campers
  • See that campers maintain good health habits 
  • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures
  • Be prepared to enact written emergency procedures in the event of an accident or illness

Overall Responsibilities: Participation in the Camp Community

  • Maintain clean beaches, boats, and boathouses
  • Keep records and make reports as requested by Waterfront Director 
  • Participate in post-camp clean-up, inventory, and evaluation
  • Maintain excellent communication with the campers, parents, and staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Waterfront Director

Qualifications 

  • Must be over the age of 18 by the start of camp.
  • Current Waterfront Lifeguarding Certification Required. 
  • Current CPR/ First Aid/AED Certifications Required
  • New York State Boater Safety Certification - must complete the online course prior to working at Eagle Island
  • *New York State Public Vessel License or willingness to obtain
  • A belief in adherence to, and willingness to promote the mission of the Eagle Island Camp 
  • Willingness and ability to share skills and traditions, and to learn new skills and philosophies.
  • Maturity, strong leadership qualities, and good judgment.
  • Acceptance and appreciation of all people and the ability to live and work with children and adults of various backgrounds, life experiences, and identities
  • Excellent communication skills, and a willingness to work as part of an effective camp staff team

Physical Aspects of the Position

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to working outdoors
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must assist campers in an emergency and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of swimmers and boaters.
  • Ability to traverse varying terrain, from flat to hilly, while moving between activities.
  • Ability to operate with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and varying environmental conditions.
