-
Set the tone. Establish a mode of conduct that is purposeful, positive, and instrumental in contributing to the general "good vibes" of the Breitenbush environment. Security team members are expected to maintain a non-confrontational presence, even when they are called to firmly enforce Breitenbush standards and agreements.
-
Maintain internal self-discipline. Breitenbush security personnel must be prepared to effectively manage conflicts when they arise and to model and remind everyone on property of behavior that is consistent with the principles of this retreat & conference center.
-
Act as a mediator. Breitenbush security personnel have a primary responsibility for the wellbeing of Breitenbush guests, staff and property.
-
Act as a communication network. Security personnel should be aware of Breitenbush’s current schedule of events in order to provide an important face-to-face communication link between yourself as an agent of Breitenbush with guests/visitors who you meet in the course of your work.
-
Provide emergency communication. Breitenbush security personnel play an important supportive role for persons who need emergency assistance. You should know whom to contact and how if assistance is needed.
-
Be warm, friendly, and helpful. The tone at Breitenbush depends on how we respond to our environment. Your attitude should be open, friendly and respectful toward all. Breitenbush security personnel are not police, and this is no place for authority trips.
-
Be creative. You must be creative when intervening or resolving conflict. Nonviolence does not mean being aloof or failing to act.
-
Be firm, but not rigid. Breitenbush security personnel must uphold the nonviolent principles and standards contained in the HOA and Breitenbush Credo.
-
Be forthright. Deal fairly and honestly with people no matter what the situation. If you don't know the answer or the solution to something, say so and request help.
-
Be calm and do your job. When on duty, Breitenbush security personnel need to control emotions and focus on the primary purpose and goal of protecting Breitenbush guests, staff and property. This means preparing emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. It is a rare person who does not become angry or afraid under stress.
-
Be forgiving. We cannot be peacekeepers and carry resentment about the "wrong" that we see in others’ behaviors. This applies to confrontations between “ramblers” and all others who are legitimately guests or staff at Breitenbush.
-
Work as a team. You don't have to do everything yourself. Use and rely on support from other Breitenbush personnel.
-
Know when to let go. If you feel you cannot perform a specific task for whatever reason, inform others so someone can be found to back you up or replace you. If you find that you cannot handle yourself appropriately during a security incident, notify another security staff member immediately and pass on the responsibility. It is better to responsibly step away from an incident than to risk escalation of a conflict.
-
Remain focused on providing security, and avoid other responsibilities while "on duty". You should not be doing personal errands, hanging out socializing, caring for children, etc. during security shifts. When it’s time for rounds or documentation, do it.
