About Brant Lake Camp
109 Years of Spirit and Tradition
Brant Lake Camp is truly a unique and special place for boys to enjoy a summer steeped in tradition and fun. Founded in 1916, BLC is one of the oldest privately owned camps in the United States with over 100 years and 4 generations of single-family ownership.
Brant Lake has over 100 summers of tradition to build upon – for example, our annual Green and Gray week-long competition. Once assigned a team, campers remain Green or Gray for life. This event is unsurpassed in excitement and passion in the camp world.
While we take great pride in our history, BLC consistently adapts to changes and improves and refines our program. Brant Lake Camp operates with a “Quick and Nimble” approach, knowing that each day presents a unique opportunity. Camp traditions are a staple of our program, but so are new and fresh activities. Each day is planned carefully, with our campers’ needs at heart.
Paramount to us, Brant Lake Camp is a place where kids are happy, safe, carefree, and comfortable, which allows them to have fun and form friendships that often last a lifetime. We believe that happy counselors make for happy campers. We are incredibly proud of the amazing experiences our staff have and that so many choose to come back summer after summer.
The Employee Experience
We hire between 100-150 staff members each summer, with around half returning and half working with us for the first time. Around 30 will be members of our Key Staff – meaning they are over 25 years old and have been at Brant Lake Camp for multiple summers. These people are in charge of various aspects of camp life and serve as mentors to first-year counselors. Typically, we have around 70 counselors who are university students from the USA, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Central America, and beyond.
Ideal Candidate
We want counselors who:
- Enjoy spending time and having fun with kids
- Are good human beings
- Are great role models.
Everything else is secondary. A boy’s summer will be fundamentally influenced by counselors who embody the characteristics above, build strong relationships with their campers, and provide positive feedback.
Our counselors are screened and selected from many applicants on the basis of integrity, character, reliability, warmth, personality, and a sincere desire to work with kids. Many have special skills and are excellent coaches — but their primary responsibility is to spend quality time with kids.
Room and Board
We provide housing and meals to all of our staff. Our counselors are assigned to each bunk, often one from the USA and one international. Bunks for younger campers may have 3 counselors assigned, with at least one of these counselors being female. Staff members are responsible for camper supervision. This includes encouraging healthy relationships and guiding campers to develop good personal health habits. The counselor’s involvement with the children in the bunk is the most important aspect of the job. All of our cabins have electricity, outlets, wifi, and bathrooms. Many have showers within the bunk (and if not, there are shower houses nearby). We have an excellent counselor lounge with TV, video games, and more. We have a fitness center as well as plenty of other facilities for our counselor staff to enjoy.
Employee Perks
- Free on-site laundry
- Fitness center
- Excellent meals
- Use of our equipment and facilities in your off-time
- Amazing connections with people from all over the world
- Counselor lounge with TV and video games
- Campus-wide WiFi
Getting Here and Getting Around
Brant Lake Camp is located about 4 hours north of New York City. We are located in the town of Brant Lake, New York and nestled in the Adirondack Mountains (a New York State Park that spans over 6 million acres). Brant Lake is six miles long and crystal clear. We hope you find it as picturesque as we do!
Getting here is easy! Most of our domestic counselors fly to Albany Airport (about 1 hour south) and we will pick you up. Our international counselors usually fly to JFK and we provide transport from the NYC area.
During your time off, we do our best to get you out and about in the local area. Twice a week, we send a counselor bus into a local town in the evening. On your days off, you are welcome to leave camp. Some of our counselors bring their own cars, but we are also willing to lend camp vehicles to drivers over the minimum age who pass a driving test.
For Fun
There is SO much to do in the Adirondacks! Some of our favorites include:
- Hike the Adirondack High Peaks
- Spend the Day on Lake George or Lake Champlain
- Take our Kayaks out on Brant Lake
- Go White Water Rafting or Tubing at Sacandaga Outdoor Center
