A fun, friendly nonprofit Maine summer camp with an 87 year history supporting underprivileged kids seeks Counselors, Nursing Assts, Kitchen Help, Outdoor Instructors, Boat Drivers, Canoe instructors

Agassiz Village is a nonprofit youth development organization whose mission is to “prepare youth for life’s journey.” For 87 years, children from under-resourced communities have come to our 330-acre lakefront overnight camp in Poland, Maine to experience unique learning opportunities, be challenged to discover interests, make lifetime friendships, and connect with inspiring mentors.

We are located in the beautiful Poland, Maine on Lake Thompson. Forty minutes north of Portland and two and a half hours drive north of Boston.

About Agassiz Village

Agassiz Village is located in picturesque Poland, Maine on one of the largest and cleanest lakes in the region, Thompson Lake. We are a traditional overnight summer camp that provides an amazing outdoor experience for campers who otherwise would not be able to afford summer camp. Agassiz Village is a magical place where staff make a difference in the lives of children each and every day. We have 330 acres, two miles of waterfront, and two islands.

The Employee Experience

We work hard to establish a collaborative and positive community where we treat one another with kindness, understanding and give one another the benefit of the doubt. We celebrate new ideas, encourage making mistakes and trying again, and emphasize effort rather than perfection. At Agassiz Village, performing well at your job means also contributing positively to our team and environment. We teach our campers how to be compassionate, how to build connections, help them to build their confidence, and help them to bounce back when things don’t go their way. That means that we need to be strong role models of these qualities as well. And most of all, working at Agassiz Village is a rewarding experience knowing you are making a difference in the lives of kids from under-resourced communities every day.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking to recruit a team of people whose strengths, skills, and backgrounds are as diverse as those of our campers. We are keen to have people join our team who are:

  • Committed to consistent learning and growth.
  • Team players, willing to help in all areas
  • Organized
  • Strong communicators
  • Competent and creative problem solvers.
  • Passionate
  • Energetic and silly
  • Kind and compassionate
  • Flexible and able to adapt quickly
  • Able to stay calm in high-pressure situations.
  • Able to work LONG and challenging days

Room and Board

Room and Board is completely free at our residential camp.  We have an award-winning chef who creates amazing food and provides multiple options at every meal.  Our housing for cabin counselors is in log cabins with campers. There are bathrooms in the cabins and a separate shower house. For activity, maintenance and kitchen staff there is semi-private housing in our lodge and some specific positions are housed in private cabins.

Employee Perks

Staff can enjoy all of the activities on camp from archery, hiking, swimming, fishing and climbing to yoga, meditation and dance completely free of charge.  We have a driver on camp that will take you to local destinations on your days off. Day trips might include hiking local mountains, shopping in Portland or Freeport, trips to the outlets, and trips to the beach or amusement park.

Getting Here and Getting Around

We have an amazing community of people living at camp every summer. Lots of international staff come in from around the world, so it's a great way to meet people, learn about other cultures, and provide yourself with options for places to stay across the globe.

Because many of our staff arrive from other countries, we do offer pick up service from the local bus stop and local airport.  We have two vans on camp and driver who take staff on shopping, hiking or beach trips on their days off.  The driver also takes staff on camp in the evenings to go to the Walmart, get food or make personal stops.

Many of our staff also choose to bring their own cars so they can come and go on their time off.

For Fun

Lake Thompson is one of the most beautiful and serene lakes in Maine.  You can fish or go tubing on our lake. Our beach has some of the most amazing star gazing and awesome sunsets.  At nearby lakes, there are also opportunities to rent boats, jet skis or paddle boards.

Maine has 3,500 miles of coastline, and is home to many beautiful national parks. Close by you can hike, animal watch and explore islands, hidden coves, and sandy beaches. Maine's reputation as a surfing destination has stuck, with miles of beaches and waves.

You can attend the blueberry or hot air balloon festivals in nearby towns.  There are great local shops and shopping in downtown Portland and the nearby cities of Freeport and Kittery.

Plus all of these destinations are great opportunities for the avid or amateur photographer.
