Position Summary

This Youth Development Coordinator supports the Maine Seacoast Mission’s college and career aspirations program Journey, a 7th to 12th grade youth mentoring program, and nurtures its growth. Journey aims to raise and sustain the postsecondary and career aspirations of students in rural Maine. The coordinator implements the components of the program in a way that upholds the Maine Seacoast Mission goals of improving academic performance, promoting responsibility of individual health and wellness, raising student aspirations, and contributing to the development of strong and nurturing family relationships. In addition to Journey responsibilities, the coordinator contributes to and collaborates with other Mission Downeast programming and staff as appropriate (i.e., Afterschool, Summer Camp, Marion Kane Leadership). 

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities 

• Facilitate recruitment activities and selection of students for the Journey program 

• Establish, foster and maintain strong relationships with students and their families to build trust 

• Implement and manage programming for Journey cohorts 

• Facilitate in-school and after school support for Journey students through one-on-one check-ins and cohort meetings 

• Provide both academic and social emotional mentorship as students navigate pathways for career or college readiness 

• Design, coordinate, and participate in Journey trips (including overnight trips), events, and cohort meetings centered on core goals of leadership development, civic and community service, and/or adventure-based recreation 

• Support peer mentoring program for current Journey students 

• Meet and collaborate with area school staff to ensure consistent, cohesive support for students  

• Maintain program and student files, including data, and assure that pre- and post-expedition paperwork and checks are completed correctly and on time 

• Collaborate as needed with the Mission’s marketing team to produce appropriate PR materials including photographs, newsletter and bulletin stories, social media posts, and website updates 

• Represent the Journey program with partners and external audiences, as appropriate 

• Pursue collaborations in the community and across Mission Downeast programs (e.g., Community Engagement Program, Good Neighbor Fund, and EdGE)  

• Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

Core Qualifications 

• Experience with working with youth and families from low income and rural backgrounds  

• Commitment to honoring, learning from, and contributing to the distinct coastal and island communities the Mission serves. 

• Demonstrated experience with and passion for working with youth, particularly middle and high school aged 

• Ability to mentor youth and volunteers  

• Experience working with and developing models that support families    

• Ability to establish credibility and rapport with school officials, and students and their families  

• Excellent written and oral communication skills  

• Strong organizational skills 

• Computer literacy, especially with Word and Excel; familiarity with databases 

Required Education and Experience 

• High school degree with some college experience  

• A minimum of 2 years of experience working with middle and high school aged youth 

Preferred Education and Experience 

• Bachelor’s degree preferred 

• Knowledge of Downeast Maine 

• Experience with student mentoring, advising, and student success 

• Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid training  

• Willingness to be trained for level 1 on Challenge Course 

Special Qualifications and Certifications 

• Possess a working vehicle that can be used to deliver program equipment when necessary 

• Have a flexible schedule and be available to work outside regular working hours, including some evenings and weekends 

Position Conditions and Requirements

Work Environment 

• Primarily office or remote work environment 

• On-site school visits 

Physical Demands 

• Prolonged periods in a stationary position at desk using a computer and keyboard  

• Physical ability to navigate uneven, wilderness terrain; carry supplies and camp outdoors 

• Ability to lift at least 30 pounds  

Travel Requirements 

• Regular travel to and from partners schools   

• Occasional travel out of state  

• Ability to drive a 15-passenger van with individuals in the vehicle  

Compensation  
This is a full-time, exempt position based on a 40-hour work week. The rate is $47,000 to $52,000.00 per year based on experience. Excellent benefits provided.
