Island Inn supplies free, clean on-site housing for all seasonal staff. All the accommodations, which have been recently renovated, are dorm style with mostly single and a few double rooms. Room type selection is based on seniority. Three home-style meals a day are included at no charge. We work hard to provide varied and nutritious meals. We also try to accommodate vegetarian and/or vegan staff members as much as we possibly can. Shared refrigerator, laundry, and WIFI/Streaming Video are also provided at no cost. The staff's daily quality-of-life while working on the Island is very important to us.
Getting Here and Getting Around
Since Monhegan Island is located 11 miles off the coast of Mid-Coast Maine, it's only accessible by daily ferries from 3 different locations, Boothbay Harbor, New Harbor (seasonal) and Port Clyde (year round). The closest major airport is located in Portland with bus service to Rockland, the closest city to the ferries. Since there are no cars on the Island, parking is located on the mainland. The Island is a hiking paradise with 12 miles of trails, spectacular ocean-edge cliffs and no paved roads.
Spending a summer on Monhegan is a memorable experience. Many of our staff are returnees - outdoor enthusiasts, artists, and world travelers. You can enjoy the safe and beautiful natural environment of the island (12 miles of breathtaking trails along the highest headland cliffs on the East Coast) while gaining valuable skills. Make lasting friendships with co-workers and guests from around the world and soak in the serenity of this remote location. It's been said that there's nothing to do on Monhegan, but that there's never enough time in a day to do it!
