Winter Caretaker

El Capitan Lodge

Sarkar Cove, Alaska

Wages/Pay
$1,800.00 - $2,000.00 / month
Experience Level
Some experience required
Job Start Date
Oct 15, 2026

This position is staffed by two people at all times, with each caretaker provided separate housing.

Caretaker positions are available for two time periods:

• October 15 through January 15
• January 16 through March 31

The full season, October 15 through March 31, may be available to the right candidate with previous maintenance and/or remote caretaking experience.

Applicants must have previous experience with basic maintenance and be comfortable working independently in a remote environment. Required skills include diesel engine maintenance, such as performing oil and filter changes on generators; operating small equipment, including snow blowers and chainsaws; and basic plumbing repairs, such as repairing a pipe in the event of freezing or cracking.

Completion bonus of $500 for three month period or $1000 for full 6 month period.

The WINTER CARETAKER job mostly entails being on property to make sure the systems are operating properly & doing less than two hours of daily checks. Since we have two caretakers, it works out well so one can leave the property to drive to town and get fresh supplies, or explore the island for the day, while the other caretaker remains on property. We require one caretaker on property at all times so having two allows for each caretaker to go off property separately.

Winters in this rain forest environment are usually pretty mild with occasional snowstorms that require snow blowing of docks & boardwalks, plowing of private three-mile road, & driveways at the lodge. Normal weather is typically rain with windstorms.  This job is best suited for someone that enjoys being mostly alone, is a self-entertainer, self-motivator, with common sense mechanical capabilities, and enjoys nature.

Food, fresh produce, & dairy can be purchased by caretakers in the towns of Craig or Klawock both of which have well stocked grocery store. The towns of Craig & Klawock are about a one hour drive away on paved roads.

Each of the caretaker facilities has 24-hour power, modern furnaces that rarely have an issue, unlimited highspeed internet, and hot and cold running water. This is best suited for someone who is looking for a period of the year to have housing provided, low living expenses, and is looking to experience a new adventure in the Last Frontier.  The lodge property is connected to a very nice, paved road system three miles out that is plowed and maintained by the State of Alaska. The setting of the lodge facility is on the ocean and offers a feeling of being remote but with all the modern conveniences of living in a small town. The three mile private road into the lodge has a locked electric gate one mile from the lodge. The largest towns on the island are Craig and Klawock and are about a one hour drive from the lodge.

Potential applicants choosing to do some research on the lodge and Prince of Wales Island can do so by visiting the lodge website and by Googling "Prince of Wales Island Alaska".

When applying please state if you are interested in a three-month period or a six-month period.
