About Seldovia Village Tribe

Seldovia is remote. Like, really, really remote. We can only be visited by plane or boat which makes it challenging for employees who not familiar with remote  adventures. It also means it's challenging for our local population (year-round and summer-seasonal) to get back and forth between Homer and Seldovia. Homer is where the paved road system ends. The Alaska Marine Highway is arguably a road here, but as its name implies, it's on the water!

Seldovia Bay Ferry was born out of the idea that our local folks needed to be able to make day trips more affordable to the "other side." Locals also need to move a lot of freight during the summer, and this ferry helps make that possible.

Seldovia, while remote and rugged, is actually a first-class city. We have plumbing, we have electricity. We have both a paved Main Street and gravel roads beyond.  We have beautiful hiking on imperfect but well-used trails.  We are a melting pot of many people who call our town home!

The Employee Experience

Our employees are sometimes locals who live here - these folks are fantastic sources of information about the inner workings of Seldovia life. And many times our employees come from other places. For these folks, we offer housing by way of a shared house. Each person has a private room but share the living spaces.

Locals often work on the water, either as fishermen or working on tug boats. Both opportunities require long stretches of time away from "home."  Working on the Seldovia Bay Ferry is unique because the work all occurs during the day, allowing folks to have a life in the evening and in between shifts during our gorgeous but short summers.

In the summer, you can look forward to Seldovia's 4th of July Celebration, the Fly In, Solstice Celebrations, among many other fun activities. We work hard so we can play hard every summer!

It's important to maintain professionalism and kindness while working on a ferry that serves a community of LONG time locals and first time visitors. We have high expectations for our crew in that regard, but we want people to also enjoy what Seldovia has to offer.

Ideal Candidate

The idea candidate for this position is someone energetic but focused. It's a lot of work with freight, so you will be in fantastic shape by the end of summer. Someone who can appreciate gorgeous views in serene spaces will be happy every day at work. However, we occasionally see some weather, so it's super important that candidates do not tend toward sea sickness. Safety is of the utmost importance on a passenger vessel, so strict training requirements at the start of the season is required, and the flexibility to help when the season closes down is also ideal.

Room and Board

We own a house in town - walkable to work. The house includes private rooms for our crew while they share the living spaces.

Employee Perks

Employees are able to bring reasonable amounts of freight back and forth free of charge on the Seldovia Bay Ferry. Seldovia is small, so after connections are made is often easy to borrow kayaks, SUPs, bikes, etc.

Getting Here and Getting Around

We cover the costs of travel to Seldovia! A vehicle can be brought to Seldovia using the Alaska Marine Highway System - the M/V Tustumena serves our community. However, we would recommend a bicycle which can be brought many ways. Fuel can be expensive in Seldovia (we're used to it, but visitors usually aren't!!) and our town proper is pretty small and totally bikeable. We do not have public transportation in Seldovia.

For Fun

Seldovia Village Tribe History

Seldovia boasts fantastic hiking which is rugged and less groomed than many larger communities may offer. Kayaking and SUPs are common in the slough and harbor. For the more adventurous, you will see these also in the bay! Our daylight hours are LONG in the summer so night skies will be uncommon. Alaska is the land of the midnight sun after all! We have an Arts Council that puts on fun activities throughout the summer. A great bulletin page to keep an eye on is this local facebook group.
