As Trail Crew, Road Trip & Kayak Guide with Moose Pass Adventures, you’ll assist with building and maintaining rustic structures and shelters, operate equipment such as chainsaws, weed trimmers, and basic carpentry tools, support maintenance of trails, and camp infrastructure. The ability to assist with off-grid systems such as solar power and water systems is a plus.
This role is quite varied. Beyond the Trail Crew portion of the position, you'll serve as a driver-guide for road-based tours and scenic transfers, and on select days, lead kayak and hiking adventures based in Moose Pass.
This position is responsible for delivering safe, engaging guest experiences on the water, on the trail, and on the road; it combines your experience in building and maintenance with the ability to share natural and cultural interpretation, along with strong logistics, guest communication, and risk management.
The role may include guiding half-day and full-day kayak and hiking tours in the Moose Pass area, supporting kayak rentals and logistics, leading and/or assisting overnight backcountry tours at Moose Pass Adventures’ remote yurt camp on Grant Lake, operating company vehicles (including 15 passenger vans with trailers) for tours and private scenic transfers as well as a variety of power tools and equipment as needed.
Compensation
Guiding (kayak / hiking / overnight tours): $21/hour
Trail Crew: $17 - $21 DOE
Road-based tours & scenic transfers (assigned driver):
$23/hour for CDL holders
$21/hour for non-CDL guides
Training and operations support (including onboarding/training days and non-tour duties) is paid at $17/hour.
Key Responsibilities
Field Ops & Trail Crew
Assist with building and maintaining rustic structures and shelters
Operate tools such as chainsaws, weed trimmers, and basic carpentry equipment
Support maintenance of trails, camp infrastructure, and equipment
Assist with off-grid systems such as solar power and water systems (experience a plus)
Road Based Guiding
Operate company vehicles safely and professionally for scenic transfers and private road-based tours between Seward, Anchorage and surrounding areas as assigned
Provide engaging interpretation and storytelling throughout the Seward Highway corridor (wildlife, glaciation, local history, Alaska culture, and place-based stories)
Manage day-tour logistics: timing, scenic/photo stops, guest comfort, weather considerations, and safe loading/unloading of luggage and gear
Safely tow and maneuver a trailer (including backing, parking, and load checks) and ensure secure load management
Complete pre-trip vehicle safety checks and report maintenance concerns promptly
Maintain vehicle cleanliness and guest-ready presentation (interior and exterior cleaning, trash removal)
Communicate early with management regarding conditions, timing changes, guest needs, and any safety or maintenance concerns
Kayak Guiding
Guide half-day and full-day kayaking and hiking tours
Lead or assist overnight backcountry tours (1-3 days)
Host guests at the remote camp, including meal preparation, hospitality, and maintaining a welcoming environment
Provide safety briefings, paddling/hiking instruction, and ongoing guest support
Share natural history, wildlife awareness, and local Moose Pass history with guests in an engaging and accurate manner
Support kayak rentals, guest check-ins, and on-site logistics
Complete pre- and post-tour setup, cleaning, and gear organization
Assist with camp and facility upkeep, including light maintenance, repairs, and supply restocking
Qualifications (Required)
Must be at least 23 years old (insurance eligibility requirement)
Valid driver’s license
Clean driving record (must meet company insurance requirements)
Ability to be approved by Moose Pass Adventures’ vehicle insurance carrier
Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification
Current CPR certification
Previous experience in building or landscaping and operating power tools & equipment safely.
Previous kayaking experience in flatwater and/or moving water, with the ability to paddle confidently, assist guests, and manage boats and gear in variable conditions
Experience hiking on uneven terrain while carrying a backpack and/or group gear, including comfort with elevation gain, wet or muddy trails, and changing weather
Leave No Trace 101 certification (or willingness to complete prior to arrival)
Familiarity with bear and moose safety protocols
Ability to work long, physically active days in variable weather conditions
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
Willingness to live and work in a small, remote community setting
Strong communication skills and a natural ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds
These physical and technical requirements are essential functions to the position.
Preferred/Valuable Skills (Big Plus)
Experience driving 15-passenger vans and/or towing trailers (including mountain and highway driving)
Prior guiding, outdoor education, or interpretive storytelling experience
Comfort with basic maintenance, repairs, or problem-solving in the field (i.e., fixing gear, camp upkeep)
Experience living or working in off-grid or remote environments
Pre-Employment Screening/Conditions of Employment
Employment in this position is contingent upon:
Providing a current DMV driving record that meets Moose Pass Adventures’ insurance and safety requirements
Successfully completing a criminal background check (including any required authorizations)
Successfully complete a pre-employment drug test and participate in random drug and alcohol testing during employment
This role includes federally regulated driving duties. Employees must comply with applicable FMCSA safety requirements, including pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing.

Pre-Season Preparation Expectation
Prior to arrival, employees are expected to:
Review Moose Pass Adventures materials on local history, geography, wildlife, and company practices
Arrive ready to share this information during training and while guiding tours
Be prepared to learn and deliver interpretive content for the Seward Highway corridor (between Anchorage and Seward), including scenic stops and local points of interest
