The Opportunity

This full-time winter seasonal position will create and facilitate kids winter activities for all children participating in Snow Sitters, Movie Night, and Holiday Events. Counselors will be part of a community-focused program providing childcare and place-based learning in Montana's fun and mountainous outdoor setting.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Independently lead or team-teach activities focused on environmental education and outdoor recreation in a day camp setting, both indoors and outdoors, for kids ages 2–12.

  • Design and implement lessons, crafts, and games using provided resources.

  • Design and implement lessons and games in an outdoor winter setting, as well as facilitate event-based children's activities.

  • Responsible for the safety and security of all kids participating in programs.

  • Responsible for daily setup and clean-up of programs.

  • Attend all required and necessary staff trainings and professional development events.

  • Maintain relationships and communication with families, coworkers, and management staff.

  • Problem Solver: Can handle unexpected behavioral or emergency situations during camp hours with the aid of management.

  • Customer Service: Maintains a personable and professional attitude while interacting with all campers and parents/guardians.

  • Self-Motivated: Willing and able to take initiative developing programming for a variety of ages, and can set up, execute, and clean up without guidance.

Qualifications

  • Background in informal or experiential learning, day camp/day care, and/or outdoor recreation.

  • Undergraduate degree preferred, in process of earning, or a combination of experience and education.

  • Enthusiasm for working with kids ages 2–12.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Current CPR/First Aid or ability to obtain prior to start date.

  • Available to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

  • Commit to working the full winter season from December to the end of April.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Working Conditions

This position is approximately 70% indoors and 30% outdoors. Must be able to work in all-weather conditions specific to high mountain environments, including but not limited to snow, cold, sun, wind, and cloudy conditions. Work hours generally fall between 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM, with occasional programs requiring overtime. Programming and work duties span all days of the week; staff work a 3-week rotation of four or five 8- to 10-hour days per week, with additional hours around holidays and large events. When indoors, the work environment resembles a typical office setting, with moderate temperatures and noise levels. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to carry a backpack with safety equipment, necessary gear, and teaching materials.

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, and stretch to fulfill tasks.

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds on a regular and continuous basis.

  • Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, running, and repetitive motions.

  • Position requires walking and hiking in winter conditions; must be able to stand and exert well-paced mobility for up to 4 hours in length.
