Are you looking for more than just a job? Do you crave adventure, creativity, and community?
We are the Monhegan House, a boutique hotel from 1872 on a remote, artistic island in Maine.
We pride ourselves on kindness, we work hard, and we welcome all.
Together, we promote the arts, protect our island’s natural beauty, and uplift each other and our island community.
If you’re ready for a season of meaningful work in an inspiring setting, come be part of something special.
📍 Housing included | 🎭 Arts & nature-focused community | 🏝️ Once-in-a-lifetime experience
With about half of last year's team returning for Seasons 3, we are looking for an additional 15 special humans to complete our MOHO family. Here are the details of the various positions available:
Pizza Cafe Manager: Create a standout menu for a bustling island lunch spot including pizza and hot sandwiches, a cold case of salads and picnic goodies, ice cream, and beer/wine. Manage costs, inspire your team, and welcome the public. Deli management experience required.
Pizza Spinner: You'll be running the only pizza oven on the entire island, so bring your A-game! Make dough, create daily hot sandwiches, and spin whole pies. Experience required.
Breakfast Chef: Craft and plate stunning 3-course, 5-star breakfasts—far beyond diner fare. Must be experienced, self motivated, and committed to amazing food. Bring your passion and precision to our kitchen... because at the MOHO, we LOVE breakfast!
Breakfast Server: You're the first person to greet our guests each morning so bring your joy and spirit of helpfulness to the breakfast room. Guests rave about our breakfasts (especially the Surprise course!) so you've got a fun job.
Line Cook: Work under our Executive Chef Bobby in a 98% scratch kitchen. Must have 1+ year experience. Know knife skills, basic meat temps, and presentation standards. An eagerness to learn and a steady demeanor round out the position.
Prep Cook: Support our food-focused hotel by preparing fresh dishes for our pizza shop, food truck, and main kitchen. Must have solid cooking experience, be able to follow a recipe, and work independently.
Food truck griller: Ever roasted oysters? Made smash burgers? We can teach you to grill, but we can't teach you to love these foods - you gotta bring that! You'll also need to work independently, enjoy the outdoors, handle money, and chat easily with customers.
Baker for Nite Nite Fattys: Create stunning, photo-worthy, scrumptious-tasting cakes, pies, and cookies - all from scratch - for our after-dinner dessert service.
Dishwasher: Own the dish pit like a drill sergeant—fast, efficient, and organized. You'll be the heart of our kitchen team as you keep our busy hotel kitchen running smoothly.
Counter help: Scooping ice cream, making espresso, ringing up retail - you're our face that serves the public. So bring a little bit of patience, and your BIG smile!
Housekeeper: We've got 28 guestrooms over 4 floors, lots of food service with crumbs, and hikers with muddy boots. If you're OCD about tidiness, come help make the MOHO sparkle.
Front of Hotel: Organize groups, maintain flawless reservations, keep the front tidy, share island knowledge, solve problems. And make it all look easy and fun while you're loving up our guests - because THAT's your #1 job! Resnexus experience a plus.
Tech Expert: Routers, repeaters, ResNexus. Oh my! We are looking for an experienced resourceful person to help keep our networks up and running in our remote location.
Gardener: Bring your green thumb to our perennial flower beds, hummingbird gardens, edible flowers, 5-tier vegetable garden, and greenhouse of micro greens.
***some of the above roles are part-time so your 40-hour week will combine 2 or more roles***
For all roles:
Work the full season: Most roles run June 18 - October 2. (Some leader roles start May 9 and run til Oct 16)
No drugs: Refrain from bringing or using hard drugs. We have a lot of fun at the MOHO (marijuana and alcohol are legal in the state of Maine for 21+ years) but we are not a big party group. So if hearty partying is your jam, the MOHO's not for you.
Smoking ONLY in Pit: We've created a covered Smokers Pit down by the garden where smokers and non-smokers alike hang out. Please smoke there. Absolutely never smoke anything in any of our 150-year-old wooden buildings.
Do your very best, every day, to be a good human.
Extras:
Let us know if you
~play a musical instrument (particularly piano or guitar, but all music welcome)...
~love dogs and have dog handling skills
~do art or other crafts like knitting, crocheting, whittling
~are a social media whiz
~have a knack for photography and video
Please mention these value-added skills in your introduction letter (see below)
ROOM AND BOARD
Room and full board (3 meals a day) are included for no charge. Rooms are located right on hotel property, shared double occupancy (except for managers who get private room) and come with fast WiFi, on-site laundromat, and lots of little fun perks (leftovers from our nightly FATTYS dessert bar, anyone?)
LIFE AT THE MOHO
You're giving us 4 months of your life, so we've put a lot of thought into how to make your MOHO summer as comfortable as it is special.
Last year, by popular request, we created a team gym. It's nothing fancy but it's a place to lift and box, dance and stretch. You've also got the Smokers Pit, a covered outdoor space, and this spring we are adding an outdoor ping pong table.
But the big surprise of 2026 is a new TV lounge on the Novelty deck.
All these spaces are for the exclusive use of you and your teammates so that you have a place to "let your hair down" away from guests and the public.
In addition, you are invited to join alongside guests in hotel activities like our daily Art Hour, weekly game nights, Watchhouse Wednesday movie nights, and more.
LIFE ON THE ISLAND
Monhegan Island offers more than 17 miles of hiking trails through the preserved forestland and along the tallest sea cliffs in New England.
The Balmy Days boat offers a daily circumnavigation cruise the island every day at 2pm (free for you as an islander) and a fish house rents kayaks down on Fish Beach (or bring your own with you!)
Monhegan’s been home to a plein-air artist colony since the 1820s and still has a dozen active studios. Create your own art with sea glass that you collect off the beach, build a fairyhouse in Cathedral Woods, or sit with a sketchbook in the sea breeze. I bet you'll find the island inspiring!
You’ll appreciate Monhegan’s deep history that dates back to the Wabanaki tribe and includes a visit from Captn John Smith, a one-room schoolhouse, a famous hermit, the artist colony, and a unique-to-Maine lobster conservation program. There are even petroglyphs on offshore Manana Island attributed to the Vikings.
Monhegan Island’s on the Atlantic FlyWay and rated in the Top 10 by Audubon because of the astounding number of migrating birds and butterflies who stop over each spring and fall.
Special events like our Summer Solstice BBQ... July 4th fireworks off of Lobster Cove... Chowderfest... and our big holiday Trap Day on Oct 1st will round out your island life.
It’ll certainly be a summer you won't soon forget!
GETTING HERE AND AROUND
Monhegan Island is located 12 miles off of Midcoast Maine. The one-hour ferries run several times a day from 3 ports: Port Clyde (the Monhegan Boat Line), New Harbor (the Hardy Boat), and Boothbay Harbor (the Balmy Days).
Once on the island, there are a handful of caretaker trucks and golf carts, but we usually travel by food because the village is small and life is all about setting our internal clocks away from the highways of the mainland, to focus on the tides and the sky.
OFFSHORE ISLAND LIFE
Even though we are a remote island, we have a First Aid Station and - for emergencies - a LifeFlight helicopter service.
To get supplies, we have a very small island market, a daily mail service, and we also get Amazon delivered free to the door.
Having said that, you will want to be in good physical and mental health because you will be far from routine medical support.
TEAM EXPERIENCE
I have big dreams for our team!
While I ask for flexibility and resilience as we grow into Season 3, I’m beyond excited to build a team that feels empowered and brimming with creativity... a team where kindness, grace, and respect for one another, our guests, our property, and our community drive everything we do.
One thing’s for sure: You’ll leave Monhegan inspired, full of ideas for living your best life and spreading joy in the world.
