Spend Your Summer with Us

Want to make some money? Want to meet new, incredible people? Looking for an adventure? Like staying busy at work?

Spending your summer in Skagway, Alaska will give you all of those things! Skagway is a small town at the top of the Lynn Canal in Southeast Alaska. It is known for its historic role during the Klondike Gold Rush and is now a major cruise ship stop on the Alaska Inside Passage. There is nowhere more beautiful with more outdoor activities than Skagway. Spend your time off taking a helicopter ride to a glacier, hiking the Upper Dewey trail to a lookout over the town, taking a whale-watching tour or driving into the picturesque Yukon Territory. Just make sure you leave time to catch up with friends and co-workers at the Skagway Brewing Company or the Red Onion Saloon. As you walk home check out the stars and maybe even see the Northern Lights. Working in Skagway is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and we would love to have you work with us! This job is a great fit for people who enjoy fast-paced work, staying active all day, meeting people from around the world, and living in a close-knit community.

What is the Store Like?:

What will your day look like? What do you sell?

Welcoming over 12,000 tourists per day, our FOUR stores (Klondike Clothing, Glacier Bay Trading Company, Moose on the Loose and Skagway Trading Co.) are the busiest retail stores in Skagway. The stores carry t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, umbrellas, mugs, knickknacks, magnets, and so many more gifts. You'll spend your day doing lots of different things at a very fast pace, so if you like variety this job is for you! Your day might consist of cashiering, stocking the floor, restocking the floor, folding items, refolding items and talking with customers. You'll give lots of directions and answer many questions about Alaska and Skagway. No day is the same, but every day is fun and exciting!

Is it a hard job?

This job is not for everyone. Your day is very busy!! Think Black Friday at Target. You will be moving quickly all day, running up and down stairs carrying merchandise, being asked questions while you're trying to finish a task, and often times feel like you have done the same task multiple times a day. The days are often similar because the routine is the same, but the busyness of the store varies. If you want a job where you can hang out behind a register all day, this job is not for you. We want people who enjoy working hard, making money and enjoying an amazing town.

Where Will I Live?:

Is there Wi-Fi? Is it expensive? Where do I do laundry?

Housing is so easy! We provide low rent housing for all our employees.

Current Housing Available:

Two beds available in all female housing. Super fun group of girls and you'll live right above the store!

One bed available in a two-bedroom apartment for a male in LGBTQ+ friendly housing. If you speak Spanish that is a plus, your housemates are native Spanish speakers.

One bed available in a one-bedroom apartment for a male in LGBTQ+ friendly housing.

We have multiple housing locations in town, including apartments and houses. Each dwelling is shared with multiple staff members. All housing has bedding, towels, dressers and shared closet space. Each unit has a full bath, access to (free) washers and dryers, kitchens equipped with everything you need, plus living rooms with smart TVs. Think of them as Airbnbs, equipped with everything you need. There are often times board games, yard games, books, footballs and basketballs available as well. To keep housing safe and comfortable for everyone, company housing is alcohol-restricted (no hard liquor), smoke- and vape-free, and pet-free. The best part is housing is only $500 per month per person.

When Should I Be There?:

When is the season? How do I get to Skagway?

The cruise ship season is April 30th-October 7th, 2026. We would like you to arrive as soon as you can arrange travel and can stay until the end of the season, October 10th. If you need a smaller window of time please let us know and we can work with you. To get to Skagway you will need to fly to Juneau (JNU) and then take a state ferry. Don't worry we will help you arrange all of this and we will pick you up at the ferry terminal in Skagway, take you to the grocery store and help get you settled in your new housing.

Will I Make Money?:

Absolutely!

Our base pay is $23 per hour. When you are hired you will agree to a contracted end date, if you work until that date, you will receive a $3/hour end-of-season bonus for every regular (non-overtime) hour worked. Any overtime hours worked are not eligible for the bonus. Don't forget everything, including internet, free laundry, garbage, water, sewer, is included in your rent! You'll have plenty of money for groceries and fun, plus we offer a 50% employee discount on regular-priced items in-store. Your store uniform is provided to you free of charge. There is also room for advancement if you're interested in a management position. Returning staff receive raises, in addition to reduced rent.

Overtime is infrequent, but you will almost always receive 40 hours per week. At the very beginning and end of the season hours will be closer to 30 hours per week realistically, but we do our best to schedule everyone based on the needs of the business.

Is This Job Right for Me?:

Are you a hard worker? Get along with most people? Want to have fun at work?

Tourism in Alaska is a big business! We want to hire people who are excited to work in a new location, meet new people and make lifelong friendships. We are looking for trustworthy, energetic, adventurous, friendly and reliable people who take pride in their work and have a strong work ethic. You should be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, be able to stand for up to 10 hours per day and go up and down both stairs and a ladder carrying merchandise multiple times per day. Three of our four stairs have an upstairs warehouse. We receive one container of goods per week that must be unloaded and brought upstairs. Think of it as your gym for the week. You will live and work with other staff members, so having good communication skills, a positive attitude and a willingness to work together are a must! This job may not be a good fit if you need a quiet work environment, require private housing, prefer a slow-paced retail setting, or are uncomfortable living and working closely with the same group of people all season.

We welcome members of the LGBTQ+ community to apply. Our store is a safe space for all employees.

Sorry, we are not currently accepting J-1 students or H2b Visa holders.
