Our location affords the best of all worlds - close to Yellowstone National Park, yet set apart and peacefully away from the big crowds. For generations of families, it has proven a truly special experience that uniquely captures the Western character and unrivaled beauty of America's last, best place.

There are twenty-six crew members during the summer months; we live on the ranch and all are encouraged to take part in activities when schedules allow. The heavy interaction between guests and crew is one of the things that everyone seems to enjoy most about the ranch.

We are currently accepting applications for:

  • Cabin Crew/Housekeeping: Candidates must be well-organized, meticulous individuals, who work well with others. Duties involve daily cabin cleaning, laundry, nightly turndowns, weekly turnovers of all cabins, as well as maintaining the cleanliness of common areas. This role has a fairly light work schedule throughout the week, which allows for extra downtime to enjoy the Ranch, check out the surrounding area, or nap! Saturdays are when we flip our guest cabins, so we make up for the extra downtime during the week, but with the right prep work and enthusiasm, we usually are done by late afternoon and have the evening off.

  • Kitchen/Waitstaff: We are looking for outgoing individuals to join our kitchen crew. If you have a culinary background, serving experience, or just love to bake cookies and bread, we have various positions open. Applicants should be able to stay at least until the beginning of September, ideally until mid-September.

  • Wranglers: We are looking for responsible and hard-working horsemen/women to join our barn crew. Every morning our wranglers gather our herd of 100 horses from the pastures that we graze. These pastures can be in thickly wooded areas, on hillsides and mountaintop meadows, and gathers can range from less than an hour to more than two depending on where they are at. Our trails vary, but most are in mountainous terrain and they span between 2 - 8 hours. Applicants must be comfortable and confident outside of an arena, as we teach our guests to ride on the trail. To be considered for this position, we do require a video of you tacking up and riding, in addition to filling out an application. Teaching experience and backcountry skills are a plus!

  • Kid's Wranglers/Peanut Butter Parents: Our kid's program is at the heart of our ranch. This role involves caring for our younger guests (6-12), spending your days inspiring a sense of adventure, and excitement in the saddle while teaching riding and promoting a safe and fun environment for growth and independence. Childcare experience is required, being comfortable on and around horses, and riding instruction experience is a plus! To be considered for this position, we do require a video of you tacking up and riding, in addition to filling out an application.

  • Office Flex: This position entails a bit of everything – from answering calls, social media content, assisting in guest services, airport pickups, town errands, tracking store inventory, as well as other office/ranch duties. It’s perfect for those who like variety throughout their week. Must have a valid driver’s license and be 21 or older.

    • Someone who would want to work in an Office/Naturalist Flex position would be a very ideal candidate! Please mention this on your application if you feel you would be a good fit for this hybrid role. Spend part of your day helping out with Office tasks, answering phones, and merchandising while the guests are having breakfast or Lunch, and then during the mid-morning and mid-afternoon hours taking guests out on hikes or fishing!

  • Hiking/Fishing Guide/Naturalist: This a flex position for a guide who enjoys educating and sharing their love for the outdoors with our guests. If you have fly-fishing experience, our ranch sits on the Gallatin River and we have fishing access to Yellowstone Park. This role will require someone who is willing to jump into whatever is needed for the day, as we are a small ranch and everyone helps each other out when needed. Must have a valid driver’s license and be 21 or older.

  • Choreperson: We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is outgoing and a self-starter. As choreperson you are asked of many different tasks, from lighting stove fires around the ranch, chopping wood, daily irrigation, assisting in cookouts, baggage and airport runs, in addition to other various daily/weekly ranch chores. Must have a valid driver’s license and be 21 or older.

  • Maintenance Position: Are you a carpenter, contractor, or handyman? We are looking for someone with experience who is ready to spend their summer working on a variety of projects around a 100-year-old ranch. We have buildings, furniture, and general areas that would benefit from some extra attention from a skilled worker who values rich history and the integrity of craftsmanship. Must have a valid driver’s license and be 21 or older.

The Employee Experience

Working at the Elkhorn is a very rewarding way to spend your summer. We really try to make the ranch as fun of an environment for not only our guests but also our crew as you are what makes the ranch come to life!

Also, the managers have all been in the guest ranch industry for a long time and have worked all positions along the way, so we not only know the roles but are more than willing to jump in when needed.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for people who take pride in a good day of hard work and want to be a part of the Elkhorn Family. Life on the Ranch is very rewarding, but it is not an effortless job. We ask that everyone be willing to help one another out, as there is no such thing as "that's not my job" on the Elkhorn. We also look for candidates who are passionate about the outdoors and are able to share that passion with others. No matter what department you work in you will interact with guests and a huge part of working on a guest ranch is the guest interaction.

Room and Board

All crew is provided room and board. There is an assortment of bunkhouses and shared cabins that have been around for 80-100+ years! Each cabin has its own character and unique style. Three very solid and delicious meals are provided every day (crew eats the same as guests), including Made-to-Order breakfast!

Laundry facilities are also available on the ranch with detergent provided at no cost.

Employee Perks

The ranch provides room and board in addition to a competitive hourly wage.  The crew is encouraged to take advantage of ranch activities when schedules allow. Besides amazing horseback riding, there are unlimited hiking trails and great fly-fishing.

Getting Here and Getting Around

The Elkhorn Ranch can be reached by flying into Bozeman or West Yellowstone. If you drive, we are on Highway 191, 33 miles north of West Yellowstone and 55 miles south of the Bozeman airport.

While we do recommend having a vehicle, the ranch has so much to offer on and nearby, that if you are without a car it is not the end of the world. You will have days off with other people and typically there is carpooling into Bozeman or Yellowstone between employees if you are without a car. Also, we have two town runners that run to town every weekend, so if there is something you need, we have a list that you can add to.

For Fun

When not working, the crew is welcome to join rides on their day off. During their downtime they can enjoy all the ranch has to offer - fishing the Gallatin, hiking to many points, relaxing around the pond and creek, hanging out with the mares and foals, or just relaxing in the crew areas and your cabins. A lot of crew like to go camping on their days off, as well as on day trips around the Yellowstone area. This is a beautiful area to take advantage of hiking, fishing, and exploring Yellowstone Park.

We also like to provide fun outings a couple of times throughout the summer. Mainly in the pre-season, we try to go rafting, explore local ghost towns, tour Yellowstone. Throughout the guest season, we host movie screenings in the Rec Hall, throw monthly parties like 'Halloween in August', and have the occasional off-ranch crew outing to a rodeo or event in the area. In the post-season we try to organize an outing for the end of the season, last year we took three days off and visited Glacier National Park.
