About Denali Air
We are the original flightseeing company in the Denali area (operating for more than 30 years!) and our private airstrip is on 30 acres, eight miles south of the road entrance into Denali National Park. Our location is remote yet accessible with six million acres of Denali National Park at our doorstep. We fly from mid-May through mid-September every year.
The Employee Experience
We are a small company operating as a very close community during the summer months, and the majority of our employees return for multiple seasons. We offer a unique opportunity to be part of the legendary Alaska aviation experience. The season at Denali Air is spent showing guests some of the most majestic scenery they will ever experience. We want our employees to also immerse themselves in the Denali experience and explore all there is to see.
Our employees are part of a small, tight-knit group of hard-working people who are professional, energetic, positive, excited to be in Denali, and highly motivated to help our guests experience one of the highlights of their Alaskan vacations. Prospective applicants should have outstanding customer service skills, be able to multitask in demanding situations, be able to take direction well, and be self-motivated to familiarize themselves with local knowledge to better serve our guests and also enjoy their own summers. A professional manner, friendly and outgoing demeanor, and positive attitude are absolutely essential. Although our employees are a diverse bunch, each with unique backgrounds and skill sets, they are all typically adventurous and interested in exploring the outdoors. Employees work, live, eat and socialize with each other on a daily basis for 4 months and so must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to thrive in a relatively remote setting. Employees must be able to commit to the entire summer season (mid-May until September 20th).
Room and Board
Denali Air offers some of the very best housing in the Denali area. Individual accommodations are on the same property as the office/hangar and airstrip. Staff housing consists of single or double stand-alone cabins with a shared bath house. There are 15 cabins onsite as Denali Air shares housing with a local coffee house, making the property a social and inviting place. The cabins are in a wooded area and are cozy (small) but well-maintained and private.
Meals are served in the log cabin “cook shack” daily. A chef prepares lunch and dinner; breakfast staples are stocked so employees can serve themselves. Housing costs are partially subsidized by Denali Air and are deducted from each paycheck. The room/board cost for each employee will be approximately $20/day for the 2018 season. The cook shack is also a social hub and there is a large screen satellite TV inside and a badminton set-up, corn hole and a fire pit on the grassy area in front. There is also a pool table in the hangar. Wi-fi is available in the cookshack and on a limited basis from cabins.
Our employees fly with us through Denali National Park on a regular basis to get the ultimate views of the Alaska Range, including the tallest mountain in North America. Most tour operators in Denali also offer complimentary or discounted tours to area employees, so there are opportunities to go on whitewater rafting trips, helicopter rides, horseback riding, etc.
Getting Here and Getting Around
We are located 8 miles south of the road entrance to Denali National Park, which is approximately 4 hours north of Anchorage and 2.5 hours south of Fairbanks. Most of our employees fly into Anchorage and we attempt to coordinate transportation from Anchorage to Denali via our airplanes or company vehicles. There is limited public transportation available in the Denali area, although you can almost always catch a Denali Air shuttle to the Park entrance area and the Canyon area since the shuttles depart from the airstrip throughout the day. We do have plenty of parking if you drive your own vehicle.
Denali Air is located in the middle of one of the most spectacular wilderness areas in the country. Although it is a popular tourist destination, the area is so vast that it is remarkably easy to get off the beaten track and go hiking, biking, camping, rafting, fishing, canoeing or exploring the wilds of Interior Alaska. There are running and hiking trails adjacent to the airstrip and a trail taking you to mountain lakes within Denali National Park 2 miles away.
The Denali area is a bustling seasonal community. There are multiple restaurants, bars, coffee shops, in the “Canyon” area where the majority of hotels are clustered near the Park entrance. Denali Air is within easy walking distance to two bars/restaurants, including one of the best restaurants in Alaska (229 Parks). There is a small lakeside bakery/café that can be reached via trail system behind the airstrip or by car (1 mile away) and a few other fantastic restaurants/bars within a 5- mile radius.
Besides the endless outdoor activities available, there are also multiple community and educational programs within a short drive (for example, check out the Denali National Park NPS site and the Denali Education Center site). There is often live music at local bars and there’s a very lively social scene in the area.
Employees are required to be in Denali from mid-May through mid-September. Van drivers need to be at least 25 years old with clean driving records due to insurance requirements.
This individual serves as the primary “command center” leader in the office in terms of coordinating staff and flights while also taking reservations and answering questions about tours via phone and email. The position requires a very high level of organizational skills, outstanding customer service, basic bookkeeping skills and close attention to details. The front desk staff is also responsible for managing our social media sites, so experience with social media is a must. Reservation agents must be friendly self-starters who are up to the challenges of multi-tasking!
This individual is the “face” of Denali Air at the hotels and area tour desks because the job entails spending a lot of time interacting with the public and the other working professionals in the Denali area. Drivers must be friendly and social but also organized and profesional. The drivers shuttle guests in our 15-passenger vans approximately 8 miles from their hotels to our airstrip. The position requires learning specific knowledge about Denali National Park and flightseeing in order to orient passengers. This is a fun, social and interesting job that will keep you on your feet!
