Outfitting Manager

The Outfitting Manager reports to the Owner and is responsible for ensuring guests are thoroughly prepared for safe, enjoyable, and successful wilderness canoe trips. This position serves as the primary educator and trip-planning resource for guests, providing equipment demonstrations, route planning assistance, wilderness safety instruction, and Leave No Trace education. This person is expected to create a welcoming, professional, and informative environment that inspires guest confidence before entering the wilderness.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide comprehensive pre-trip orientations to guests preparing for Boundary Waters and Quetico canoe trips.

  • Demonstrate the proper use, setup, care, and packing of camping equipment including tents, stoves, water filtration systems, food packs, and other wilderness gear.

  • Assist guests with route planning based on experience level, trip objectives, weather conditions, fishing interests, and current wilderness conditions.

  • Educate guests on Leave No Trace principles and responsible wilderness travel practices.

  • Teach paddling, portaging, campsite selection, food storage, wilderness safety, and risk management techniques.

  • Answer guest questions regarding regulations, permits, route conditions, fishing opportunities, and wilderness travel logistics.

  • Ensure guests receive all necessary equipment and information before departure.

  • Accurately reserve and issue BWCA Wilderness entry permits.

  • Assist guests with loading equipment and securing canoes to vehicles when necessary.

  • Train and supervise seasonal outfitting staff in orientation procedures and guest service standards.

  • Maintain current knowledge of Boundary Waters routes, regulations, closures, fire restrictions, fishing reports, and wilderness conditions.

  • Assist with general outfitting operations including trip preparation, gear organization, shuttle coordination, and customer service.

  • Contribute to maintaining a clean, organized, and professional outfitting facility.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to commit to employment between approximately May and October 1.

  • Significant wilderness travel experience required. Extensive Boundary Waters and/or Quetico experience strongly preferred.

  • Exceptional communication and teaching skills.

  • Ability to comfortably present information to individuals, families, and groups.

  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently.

  • Ability to work weekends and maintain a flexible schedule during peak season.

  • Ability to lift and move canoes, packs, and outdoor equipment regularly.

  • Genuine passion for wilderness travel, outdoor education, and helping guests create successful wilderness experiences.

  • Strong customer service skills and ability to remain patient, positive, and professional in a fast-paced environment.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive hourly pay. ($20-$30 per hour based on experience)
