    Aquarium Husbundry

    Seasonal Aquarist 1

    Summary:

    This position provides basic support to the Aquarium division for daily husbandry and related duties for aquatic fishes, invertebrates, and plants; and their exhibit and holding aquariums under the direct supervision of the Aquarium Curator at the Alaska SeaLife Center.

    Education/Training Requirements:

    A Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field required. Experience in the care of aquatic animals preferred. Computer skills including email, Excel, Word, and database programs. Open water SCUBA certification or the ability to become certified within six months of hire required. 

    Essential Duties:

    1. Under the guidance of the Aquarium Curator, assists in the care, exhibition, and study of the aquarium collection of invertebrates, fishes, and plants.

    2. Assists in the daily animal diet preparations, water quality testing, and routine cleaning of animal exhibits, holding pools, food preparation facilities, and aquarium work areas.

    3. Assists in exhibit preparation, including exhibit changes and improvements, and modifications including lighting, habitat, and plumbing as needed, lifting and moving up to 50 lbs. as needed. 

    4. Maintains aquatic habitat cleanliness and preparation for visitors.

    5. Learns and assists in health and care of the aquatic animals, including health observation and intervention for treatment. Learns and applies proper disease recognition, diagnosis, and treatments.

    6. Learns to maintain and operate aquarium life support systems.

    7. Under guidance of the Aquarium Curator, monitors water quality of aquarium systems. 

    8. Keeps proper records in accordance with ASLC and permit requirements. 

    9. May participate in field collection and transport of specimens for exhibits, while handling objects, tools, and controls.

    10. Participates in presentations to visitors and the public on topics in marine science and ASLC operations.

    11. May assist and work with senior staff and the Curator on various department goals and programs including research, education, and conservation.

    12. Ability and willingness to acquire and/or maintain active SCUBA diver status to dive in cold water environments to support ASLC dive operations. 

    13. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting a positive attitude, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.

    Education / Interpretation Internship

    Alaska SeaLife Center

    Summary:

     The intern will deliver informal front-of-house and education programs working as part of the Education / Interpretation team.  The intern will aid in the development, preparation, and execution of programming for schools, and tour groups of all ages. The intern will be expected to interpret live and static exhibits to the visiting public, teach interactive marine science programs to groups, and monitor groups during their self-guided tours. The intern is required to work a flexible schedule to accommodate variable hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed. The intern will also work with the education team on projects that may include virtual field trip elements, inventory and supply maintenance of educational materials and resources, video and program creations, and classroom management for Pre-K through adulthood. The intern will have daily interaction with public programs, education, exhibits, husbandry, and research personnel.

    Education / Experience: 

    • High school diploma or GED; or equivalent experience; Study in biology, marine science, or a related field is a plus. Previous customer service experience preferred. Experience in performing arts, narrating, hosting, or similar is a plus. 


    Essential Duties:

    • Interpret all of the Alaska SeaLife Center’s static and live animal exhibits housing marine mammals, birds, fish, and invertebrates. Help maintain the physical appearance of manned exhibits and deliver announcements over the public address system.

    • Present chats and presentations, multi-media shows, structured and impromptu talks, and guided tours by learning to employ appropriate interpretive techniques and devices geared to the characteristics and interests of particular audiences.

    • Assist the Learning Department with public presentations by maintaining and organizing education program materials

    • Deliver various scheduled programs and activities emphasizing conservation, empathy and diversity. Programs and activities may include family programs, community and educational events, narrating animal feeds and training sessions, leading group tours, pop-up programs, nocturnes, structured learning engagement, and daily guest interpretive opportunities throughout the center for guests of all ages.

    • Providing exceptional customer service when interacting with visitors and answering general inquiries.

    • Assists with daily operations, including opening and closing, answering emails, group check-in and orientation, and customer service.

This role engages diverse audiences through onsite programs, virtual learning, and community outreach, while also supporting the creation and maintenance of educational projects. Working collaboratively with teams across Exhibits, Guest Services, and Communications, the specialist ensures a seamless, enriching learning experience for all Alaska SeaLife Center guests.

    Education/Training Requirements:

    Summer of 2026 in Exchange for Volunteer Opportunities!


    The Alaska SeaLife Center, located in Seward, Alaska is recruiting RVers for the 2026 season. RV camping spaces come with full hook-ups and a million dollar view of Resurrection Bay mere steps from our front door.

    RV volunteers can fill any of the following positions:

    • Greeters are an important part of the Visitor Experience Team at the Center. Greeters welcome our guests to the Center by giving them an overview of our exhibits and answering various questions about the Center. We are looking for someone who is comfortable with public speaking, enjoys interacting with others, will ensure excellent and memorable experiences for our guests, and has an enthusiasm for the Center and its mission.

    • Ticketing is responsible for Front of House Reservations and Ticketing functions, Customer Service and Sales of all admission, tours, encounters, as well as visitor information capture and completion of the annual Visitor Survey. We are looking for someone who enjoys customer service.

    • Interpretation will assist with directions and answer guest questions as they tour the Center. May give informal talks and programs about various animals. Potentially lead Behind the Scene programs. We are looking for someone who loves to communicate with a diverse group of people of all ages.

    • Grounds will help to maintain the professional appearance of the Center and grounds by cleaning, mowing, raking, edging, weeding and trimming. We are looking for someone who is interested in working outdoors and not afraid to get dirty.

    • Custodial will be responsible for the cleanliness and appearance of the building and grounds at the Alaska SeaLife Center. We are looking for someone with great attention to detail and loads of initiative.

    Before volunteering you will participate in training and receive additional information about this position.


    Applicants must be able to provide their own camping unit. An RV site will be provided on the shores of beautiful Resurrection Bay in the RV parking lot for the Alaska SeaLife Center and includes water, electricity, and sewer. In exchange, the Center asks for a minimum of 20 hours of volunteering per week per adult. Preference will be given to those who can commit to staying for the entire or most of the summer season. Our summer season runs from mid-May to mid-September. All volunteer positions will be subject to a background check.

    Summary:

    This position is responsible for Front of House Reservations and Ticketing functions; Customer Service and Sales of all admission, tours, and encounters; and visitor information capture from surveys. 

    Education/Training Requirements:

    Experience in retail sales and/or in a cashier/cash-handling position preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of customer service and/or sales skills preferred. Must be at least 14 years of age. 

    Primary Responsibilities:

    1. Operates Point of Sales System, calculates ticket costs, receives payments, makes correct change, issues receipts, maintains records, answer phones, and exercises full control and accountability for assigned cash drawer to include balancing of cash drawer after each shift.  

    1. Encourages customers to purchase additional tours and/or memberships in addition to general admission. Ensures each customer is made aware of available add-ons. 

    1. Data entry and mailing support as needed and directed by the Development and Guest Services Supervisor. 

    1. Creates a welcoming lobby atmosphere and maintains high level of customer service as outlined in the Ticketing Manual. Ensures both internal and external customers’ expectations are exceeded.

    1. Follows all safety protocols, and clearly communicates the safety protocols to guests.

    1. Maintains a clean, neat personal appearance following uniform guidelines as outlined in the Ticketing Manual. Conducts self in a professional manner.

    Seasonal Wildlife Response Animal Care Specialist

    $20.35 / hour
    Alaska SeaLife Center

    Summary:

    This position is responsible for the routine handling and care of animals being housed in the Rehabilitation/Quarantine area under the supervision of the Wildlife Response Curator at the Alaska SeaLife Center. The main focus of this position is marine mammals but there are occasional responses to birds and other wildlife in the Seward area.

    Education/Training Requirements:

    Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal science, veterinary science or related field or equivalent experience. Two years of experience in animal husbandry, experience with marine mammals preferred.

    Essential Duties:

    1. Under the supervision of the Husbandry Director/Wildlife Response Curator, assists in the delivery of animal care to animals being housed and cared for in the rehabilitation area, quarantine area, and other animal areas in the ASLC.

    1. Coordinates with the Wildlife Response Curator and veterinary staff to ensure consistency in the delivery of animal care to animals being housed and cared for in the rehabilitation / quarantine area, including uneven, wet surfaces.

    1. Performs routine animal husbandry to include diet preparation, feeding animals, cleaning animal enclosures, disinfecting prep areas and equipment, and maintaining animal records, while using tools.

    1. Follows established routine for animal care, food preparation, and clean up, including proper maintenance and sterilization of equipment, sometimes lifting up to 50 lbs.

    1. Under the supervision of a veterinarian or a veterinary technician performs basic medical treatments such as delivery of oral medications and wound cleaning and assists in basic medical procedures such as animal restraint for physical exam.

    1. Keeps proper records in accordance with the ASLC and permit requirements.

    1. As team leader, oversee interns and volunteers to ensure animals are monitored and daily tasks are completed in a timely manner.

    1. Participates as needed in presentations to visitors and the public on topics in marine science and ASLC operations.

    1. Answers the ASLC’s 24-hour stranding hotline. May be asked to be on call to cover the hotline after regular working hours. Employees are compensated for being on call.

    1. Becomes familiar with maintenance and operation of mechanical systems.

    1. Maintains a valid driver’s license.

    1. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.

    1. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.

    1. Performs other related duties as assigned.
       

    Other Skills and Abilities:

    Ability to be organized, self-motivated, and possess a strong sense of cleanliness and animal awareness. Attention to detail. Willingness to work holidays, weekends, and/or overnights to accommodate the needs of the animal patients. Comfortable with social media and potentially being on camera and interviewed while working.
