The Snowmobile Guide is responsible for providing guests with a safe, enjoyable, and memorable backcountry snowmobiling experience. This position requires strong riding ability, knowledge of local terrain and snow conditions, excellent customer service skills, and a strong commitment to safety.

The Snowmobile Guide represents the company while leading guided rides, assisting guests with snowmobile operation, explaining local terrain and conditions, and ensuring that all guests follow company, land-management, and safety regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead guided snowmobile tours and backcountry rides for guests of varying experience levels.

  • Provide thorough safety briefings and explain proper snowmobile operation before each ride.

  • Inspect snowmobiles and equipment before and after each trip.

  • Monitor weather, snow conditions, terrain, and avalanche hazards and adjust routes as necessary.

  • Maintain constant awareness of guest locations, abilities, and safety throughout the ride.

  • Select appropriate routes based on weather, snow conditions, guest experience, and current regulations.

  • Assist guests with snowmobile operation, stuck machines, minor mechanical issues, and basic troubleshooting.

  • Maintain professional communication with guests and coworkers throughout the day.

  • Educate guests about local history, wildlife, geography, riding areas, and responsible snowmobile use.

  • Enforce company rules and applicable land-management regulations.

  • Carry and properly use required emergency and safety equipment.

  • Respond appropriately to accidents, injuries, emergencies, changing weather, and other unexpected situations.

  • Communicate changing trail and riding conditions to management.

  • Keep snowmobiles, trailers, tools, gear, and facilities clean and organized.

  • Complete required trip reports, inspection forms, incident reports, and other company paperwork.

  • Assist with snowmobile fueling, loading/unloading, maintenance, and preparation when needed.

  • Maintain a positive, professional attitude and provide exceptional customer service.

  • Perform other duties related to the rental and guiding operation as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Previous snowmobile riding experience required; extensive backcountry experience preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of snowmobile operation and backcountry riding techniques.

  • Ability to safely operate a snowmobile in varied terrain and snow conditions.

  • Strong knowledge of local riding areas, trails, roads, and applicable regulations preferred.

  • Excellent communication and customer-service skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with guests of different ages, abilities, and riding experience.

  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in changing or stressful conditions.

  • Basic mechanical and troubleshooting skills preferred.

  • Current driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be physically capable of working outdoors in cold, snowy, and mountainous conditions.

  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and during peak winter periods.

Safety Responsibilities

Safety is the highest priority of the Snowmobile Guide. Guides are expected to:

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.

  • Follow applicable National Park Service, Forest Service, state, and local regulations.

  • Never knowingly place guests or coworkers in an unsafe situation.

  • Continuously evaluate weather, snowpack, terrain, and riding conditions.

  • Maintain appropriate spacing and control of the group.

  • Know emergency procedures and evacuation routes.

  • Report accidents, injuries, equipment damage, and safety concerns immediately.

Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to:

  • Ride snowmobiles for extended periods.

  • Work outdoors in freezing temperatures, snow, wind, and changing weather.

  • Lift and move snowmobile equipment and gear.

  • Assist with stuck or disabled snowmobiles.

  • Walk and work on uneven, snowy, icy, and mountainous terrain.

  • Bend, kneel, climb, and perform basic mechanical tasks.

  • Remain physically active throughout the workday.

Work Environment

This is an outdoor, physically demanding position in a mountain winter environment. Guides may spend most of their workday outside in cold temperatures and variable weather conditions. The position may involve early mornings, long days, weekends,holidays, and extended periods during the busy winter season.
