Getting Here and Getting Around
You may hear locals refer to our mountain as "The Island in the Sky." Mostly that is because of the beautiful way the clouds can nestle in around the range, creating the illusion of being surrounded by water. However, that term can also be used to reference how remote our location can be.
Without a personal vehicle, getting to the mountain can be a tricky but not unobtainable task. Most folks find the easiest way is to fly into either Washington, DC or Lewisburg, WV. From there you would then catch the Amtrak train to White Sulphur Springs, WV. Hop on the MTA bus and make your way to the mountain. It may seem like a stretch, we like to think of it as the beginning of the adventure!
- Dulles International Airport | Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (flydulles.com)
- Home | Greenbrier Valley Regional Airport (mylwb.com)
- White Sulphur Springs, WV (WSS) | Amtrak
- Pocahontas County - Mountain Transit Authority (mtawv.com)
Once here, everything on the mountain is fairly centralized and we do provide complimentary shuttles within the resort area. On mountain we have several restaurants and a small convenient store for basic necessities.
Looking for something a little more?
Marlinton, WV is approximately 35-40 min drive from the top of the mountain. There the have an IGA (a small local grocer), Walgreens, and a few other stores and restaurants. (MTA bus has a Snowshoe-Marlinton route. Visit the MTA website for details)
Elkins, WV is about an hour drive from the top of the mountain. There they have Kroger, Walmart, Big Lots, Walgreens and several other well known retail locations. (Snowshoe Delivery Service will deliver your Walmart pick-up order to the mountain. For more information on this service click the link below.)
Another thing to keep in mind when relocating to Snowshoe is that we fall within Green Bank Observatory's National Radio Quiet Zone. What does this mean for you?? Cell service is extremely limited. The most reliable carriers on the mountain will be AT&T and Verizon.
Snowshoe does partner with City Net to provide a decent amount of WiFi coverage around the resort. Be prepared to live a little unplugged and if you love outer space check out the link below to explore with Green Bank Observatory!
For Fun
We're located in Pocahontas County, WV; nicknamed Nature's Mountain Playground, and rightfully so. The adventure is endless on the mountain and surrounding area. In the summer we are an outdoor lovers dream! We are known for our downhill mountain biking trails but have something for everyone!
✔ beautiful sunsets and spectacular views
✔ huge network of hiking and biking trails
