About Lava Mountain Lodge and CD Trail Bar & Grill

Lava Mountain Lodge is more than just a place to stay—it’s a full-service, all-season destination nestled in the mountains above Dubois, Wyoming. We’re in the Shoshone National Forest, located right on US Highway 26/287 (the scenic Togwotee Trail to Yellowstone), which means our location gives guests breathtaking views, easy access to outdoor recreation, and a peaceful, natural setting. We currently offer 10 motel rooms, 4 tiny home cabins, and a big 4 story house that includes 6+ bedrooms. We have laundry on site, gym, fuel, convenience store, restaurant and bar.

The Employee Experience

Working at Lava Mountain Lodge means being part of a team that wears many hats. Because we provide lodging, food service, guest services, and retail, there’s a variety of roles and situations, and things can change with the seasons. Here’s what staff can expect:

  • Seasonal Variation: Summer is busy with tourism to Yellowstone, Grand Teton, hiking, camping, etc. Mixed weather seasons (shoulder seasons) can be quieter but still active. Winters bring snowmobiling, cross‐country skiing, and hunting. That means staffing needs shift; flexibility is a plus.

  • Multiple Facilities on One Property: You may work in guest rooms, cabins, the restaurant, the store, or in maintenance depending on your role. Sometimes you’ll coordinate with another department (e.g. housekeeping & front‐desk; kitchen & restaurant).

  • Guest Interaction: Because we’re a destination, guests expect hospitality, friendliness, helpfulness. Part of the service is the ‘Wyoming welcome’—helping people enjoy the outdoors, giving local info, answering questions about trails, etc.

  • Physical Work + Varied Tasks: Expect tasks like cleaning, restocking, laundry, possibly helping with restaurant food service, retail items, etc. Some work outdoors or moving supplies. Weather can add challenges.

  • Pride in Environment & Quality: Because of our location, views, guest expectations, and our services, maintaining cleanliness, safety, and a high level of guest satisfaction is crucial.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Getting to Lava Mountain Lodge

Lava Mountain Lodge is located along U.S. Highway 26/287, about 30 miles west of Dubois, Wyoming, and about 50 miles east of the Moran Junction entrance to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

  • By Car: Most employees arrive by car. If you’re coming from out of state, the nearest major airports are in Jackson Hole, WY (JAC), Idaho Falls, ID (IDA), and Riverton, WY (RIW). From any of these airports, it’s a scenic drive to the lodge.

  • By Plane + Shuttle/Car: Some employees choose to fly into Jackson or Riverton, then arrange for pickup or a car rental. With advance notice, the Lodge can often help coordinate transportation from town for new hires.

  • Road Conditions: The lodge is at elevation (≈7,200 ft), which means winter driving involves snow and icy roads. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) keeps Highway 26/287 plowed, but 4WD or AWD vehicles are highly recommended if you bring your own car.

Getting Around Once You’re Here

Because we provide on-site room and board, employees don’t need to commute daily — your housing, meals, and workplace are all in one place. Still, here’s what to expect for mobility:

  • On Property: Nearly everything is walkable — your staff housing, work areas (lodge, restaurant, store), and amenities are all within a short distance.

  • Into Town (Dubois, WY): About a 30-minute drive east for groceries, banking, post office, or extra supplies. Many employees carpool if they don’t have their own vehicle.

  • Recreation Access: Trails for hiking, fishing, and snowmobiling start right near the lodge. In winter, snowmobiles are a common way to explore the area. In summer, bikes or simply hiking out from the property are easy options.

  • Nearby Destinations: Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, Jackson Hole, and other outdoor attractions are all within a short drive — perfect for days off.

For Fun

Living and working at Lava Mountain Lodge in Dubois, Wyoming, offers employees a unique blend of rustic charm and outdoor adventure.

Lava Mountain Lodge is nestled in the Shoshone National Forest, providing immediate access to a variety of outdoor activities:

  • Hiking & Snowshoeing: Explore numerous trails directly from the lodge, suitable for all skill levels.

  • Mountain Biking: Ride through scenic mountain paths, with options for both beginners and experienced cyclists.

  • Wildlife Viewing: The area is home to diverse wildlife; employees can enjoy observing animals in their natural habitat.

  • Cross-Country Skiing: During winter, groomed trails offer excellent skiing opportunities.

  • Back country Snowmobiling: Also during the winter months, our groomed trails will lead you to some untouched territory for those who are looking for an adventure offering unforgettable sights and experiences.

Dubois offers additional attractions for employees to explore during their time off:

  • Dubois Museum: Learn about the local history and culture.

  • National Bighorn Sheep Center: Discover the region's wildlife conservation efforts.

  • Tie Hack Historical Monument: Visit this monument to learn about the area's logging history.

  • Wind River Scenic Byway: Take in breathtaking views along this picturesque route.
