Hummer Guide

Alaska Hummer Adventures

Ketchikan, Alaska

Want to explore Alaska for a living? Spend your summer in the Tongass National Forest, looking for wildlife, hiking through the rainforest and sharing Ketchikan with small groups from around the world.

Alaska Hummer Adventures offers private, customizable tours for groups of up to six guests. No two tours are exactly alike, and that’s what makes this job different.

One tour might have you hiking through the rainforest looking for black bears and bald eagles. The next might focus on Alaska Native culture, local history and Ketchikan’s most famous landmarks.

We’re looking for outgoing, adventurous and personable people who love the outdoors and enjoy meeting new people.

About the Job

As a Hummer Guide, you’ll lead private tours of Ketchikan and the surrounding area in one of our custom Hummer vehicles.

You’ll introduce guests to everything that makes Southeast Alaska special, including:

  • Tongass National Forest

  • Black bears

  • Whales

  • Bald eagles

  • Blacktail deer

  • Rainforest hiking

  • Coastal scenery

  • Local landmarks

  • Alaska Native culture

  • Ketchikan history

Tours last 2–4 hours, and every group is different.

Our guests range from families and couples to older travelers and adventurous visitors looking to get off the beaten path. You’ll need to be comfortable adapting your tour to different interests, ages and mobility levels while providing an excellent experience for everyone.

Compensation

$18–$20/hour + tips

In addition to your hourly wage, Hummer Guides have the opportunity to earn cash tips directly from guests.

Because our tours are private and highly personalized, guides have the opportunity to build genuine connections with their guests and provide a memorable experience — which can translate into strong tips.

With free housing provided for the entire season, a significant portion of your seasonal income can go toward saving money or enjoying everything Alaska has to offer.

You’re getting paid to explore Alaska — and your guests can tip you for showing them a great time.

The Ideal Candidate

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Fun, outgoing and personable

  • Comfortable talking with small groups

  • A strong verbal communicator

  • Friendly and accommodating

  • Passionate about the outdoors

  • Interested in Alaska’s history, culture and wildlife

  • Comfortable leading guests on light-to-moderate hikes

  • Physically capable of being active throughout a 2–4 hour tour

  • Dependable and professional

  • At least 25 years old (if you're close, still apply)

You don’t have to be an Alaska expert when you arrive. What matters most is your personality, enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

If you love meeting new people, exploring the outdoors and telling people about the place you’re living in, you’ll fit right in.

Room & Board

FREE HOUSING IS PROVIDED FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON.

Employee housing is provided from late April through September, so you can spend the entire season in Ketchikan without having to find your own place to live.

Housing is free as long as you complete your contract.

Ketchikan is a small community surrounded by mountains, rainforest and ocean. Your backyard for the summer is one of the most spectacular environments in the world.

Employee Perks

  • Competitive hourly wages + tips

  • Free housing for the entire season

  • Work outdoors in beautiful Southeast Alaska

  • Small groups of 2–6 guests

  • No two tours are the same

  • Explore Ketchikan while you’re working

  • Meet people from around the world

  • Fun, independent work environment

  • Opportunities to learn about Alaska’s history, culture and wildlife

For Fun

When you’re not working, go explore!

Ketchikan is surrounded by some of the most incredible wilderness in Alaska. Your days off can mean hiking through old-growth rainforest, fishing for salmon, kayaking through the Inside Passage or getting out on the water looking for whales.

You might see a black bear on your way to work.

You might spend your afternoon fishing.

You might hike to a waterfall after your shift.

Or you might just grab a drink with your coworkers and watch the cruise ships leave for the day.

That’s summer in Ketchikan.

A Different Kind of Tour Guide Job

This isn’t a job where you’re driving the same route and repeating the exact same experience every day.

You’re working with small private groups, and every group comes to Alaska looking for something different.

One morning you’re looking for wildlife with a family from Texas.

That afternoon you’re showing a couple from Europe the rainforest.

The next day your guests want to learn about Ketchikan’s history and Alaska Native culture.

You get to decide how to make their Alaska experience unforgettable.

Above all, our goal is to provide our guests with a memorable experience while creating a genuinely fun, engaging and profitable seasonal job for our employees.
