Self-Secured Housing: Renting an apartment, a room, or a cabin in Fairbanks is a great option for those who cannot be accommodated in employee housing. Many employees get together to rent an apartment or house to share. We encourage those relocating to investigate personal accommodations as soon as possible, as space availability comes and goes quickly within the local rental market.

Getting Here and Getting Around
Some employees choose to bring their cars and make the long drive through Canada, others put their car on a ferry in Washington. Most employees coming from out-of-state fly into the Fairbanks International Airport. The main airline carriers that fly into FAI are Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines, although several other carriers have summer seasonal flights.
How do people get around Fairbanks?
Most local people drive cars or take the public busses. The city has an area of 32.7 square miles, so getting around on foot or by bike can take some time! Many of our out of state employees that don’t bring cars choose to ride bikes or walk to work. Taxi’s, Uber, and Lyft are also available in the city. There are many places to purchase a new or used bike once you arrive in Fairbanks.
What kind of shopping is available locally?
Fairbanks has all the conveniences of any small modern town; Grocery stores (including Safeway, Fred Meyer, Walmart), Costco, Old Navy, Famous Footwear, Ulta, hardware stores, outdoors sporting goods stores, a movie theater, fitness & recreational centers, K-12 schools, churches, Wells Fargo bank, post offices, etc. Downtown Fairbanks, and outlying areas, have many souvenir shops and artisan galleries. Local Fairbanks restaurants and breweries can be found throughout the city, with a few chain restaurants and fast-food options.
For Fun
Outdoor and indoor entertainment
Living in Fairbanks, you are surrounded by the forest, hills, rivers, and lakes, so it is an ideal area for those who enjoy the outdoors. You can easily access walking and hiking trails from within the city, and just shortly outside of the city. Approximately 60 miles northeast of central Fairbanks you’ll find Chena Hot Springs Resort. Just 15 miles southeast, you’ll find the charming town of North Pole, where you can visit Santa Claus and his reindeer any day of the year! On June 21st, the Summer Solstice, Fairbanks celebrates 24 hours of daylight with a downtown block party full of local vendors and street performances. In addition, Fairbanks has many different indoor activities available. There are several choices of bars and restaurants (often featuring live music), as well as an indoor recreation center (The Alaska Club) with a trampoline park, weights, aerobics classes, cardio machines, and basketball court.
