Farm to Table Restaurant in Remote Maui
Hāna Farms is a seven-acre tropical farm with our bakery, farm to table pizza restaurant and local sourced marketplace located in the lush rainforest of Maui's eastern coast. We are very community oriented and encourage a space of acceptance for all expressions and identities. Having a number of different departments has provided opportunities for our staff to stay enthusiastic and driven.
In the peaceful and remote jungle town of Hana, Maui.
About Hana Farms
We are a tropical farm, pizza restaurant, bakery, and marketplace located in the exotic, lush rainforests of Maui's eastern coast, along the historic Hāna Highway.
We have been growing a large variety of tropical fruits and exotic spices since 1999. Our founders first began selling lemonade and banana bread by the roadside in 2006. Now, with the help of hundreds of workers who have passed through Hāna over the years, we've expanded to make a wide assortment of goods in-house with locally sourced ingredients, such as hot sauces, candies, and spreads.
Our stand, alongside the road to Hāna, is a local marketplace where you can find our products, as well as local produce, farm eggs and handicrafts from our neighbors. We are proud to offer a space for Maui residents to sell their art and passions. Our bakery makes banana bread and desserts daily and The Bamboo Hale at Hāna Farms serves fresh pizzas and salads, using as many ingredients from the land as possible.
The Employee Experience
What is unique about our workplace is the sense of community that we have here. Not only is Hāna a small town where you will often see familiar faces who always seem to be willing to lend a helping hand, but we have built a close-knit community of resident workers here on the farm who share similar values. We are lucky to have attracted the people that we have who have contributed to making our farm a better place through hard work, creative ideas, and more efficient practices. We welcome the input from all of our staff, no matter their age or experience, and therefore have created a space where all feel comfortable and heard.
Most of our staff report that the farm community is their favorite aspect of their experience, due to the ease of settling in, the strong relationships they build, and the fun events that are put on by residents outside of work. The freedom to flourish on this beautiful property while co-creating with like-minded individuals can be wildly advantageous to creating the life you envision for yourself!
Ideal Candidate
We are located 50 miles from the Kahului airport and we are at the end of a long winding jungle road in the remote rainforests of Maui. To thrive here you will need to be open-minded, be a true nature lover, and not squeamish about camping, bugs and healthy dirt. It is recommended that you only bring as much as you can carry. The Hana experience is as much about getting back to basics and finding within yourself what you really need to be happy and that includes what material possessions you need to thrive.
Jungle and community living is a different way of life. The community members that do best here are comfortable with adjusting to a new environment, living immersed in nature, navigating the ebbs and flows of an ever-changing organization, and being around many energies daily. While jungle life is healing and relaxing, we are also a bustling business serving hundreds of friendly locals and eager tourists a day. An ideal candidate for our farm is one who can manage the stresses of a fast-paced restaurant while also appreciating all of the rewards that come with living in paradise! We are also currently in search of culinary creatives to help design and execute a tasting menu for future garden tours. Please inquire about this role if you are interested.
Room and Board
Due to the structure of our organization, room and board are included as part of compensation. Housing ranges from tent platforms and jungle shacks to private rooms in a dorm setting. Most of our residents have cabins, but sometimes when folks first arrive, they may have to stay in a tent. Therefore, we tend to attract those who thrive in the outdoors, don't mind bugs or sudden changes in weather, and are willing to step out of their comfort zone.
All food is provided, which includes anything we grow on our land, as well as groceries bought for the community kitchen. We don't just offer cooking staples, we go above and beyond to provide our staff with a wide range of items to satisfy proper nourishment and cravings. Some examples of farm-fresh fruits and vegetables available are bananas, pineapple, mangos, papaya, coconuts, breadfruit, starfruit, passionfruit, citrus, long beans, collard greens, tomatoes, eggplant, herbs and more! All residents are welcome to cook whatever and whenever they please in the shared and well-stocked community kitchen. Almost everyone who has lived at Hāna Farms has given extremely positive feedback about the options and abundance of food provided. If you don't see what you're looking for, just ask!
Employee Perks
Tips are pooled so all employees, regardless of position, will make extra money! We also offer discounts on merchandise and restaurant meals.
Getting Here and Getting Around
Upon arriving to Maui, you will need to take a small plane to our local airport in Hana where we will pick you up. It is important to note that there is no public transportation in Hana. It is a 15 minute drive and 30 minute bike ride to Hana town but please arrive first before deciding to send a bicycle as the windy highway is for seasoned riders only. If you plan on staying long term, shipping a car over would certainly be worth it, however, our residents have had no trouble hitchhiking and getting rides to both Hana town and the other side of the island. There is a black sand beach 5 minutes away and white sand beach 20 minutes away by car.
