POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: ASSISTANT RETAIL MANAGER 

Grand Canyon Conservancy (GCC) is the official nonprofit partner of Grand Canyon National Park. As the official philanthropic and collaborative partner of Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon Conservancy’s mission is to inspire generations of park champions to cherish and support the natural and cultural wonder of Grand Canyon. GCC raises private funds, operates retail shops within the park, and provides premier educational programs on the region's natural and cultural history. 

GCC is currently seeking a Retail Assistant Manager to assist and support the GCC Retail Store Manager in managing GCC Interpretive sales stores. The GCC Assistant Manager will ensure that store revenue and supporter recruitment goals are met, that store staff are trained, that world-class visitor service is provided, and that the stores operate efficiently and effectively.  

This on-site, non-exempt, full-time, benefit-eligible position reports to the Retail Store Manager and is located at the Grand Canyon. Rental housing may be available at a nominal cost to the employee; there is currently a waiting list for housing at the South Rim.  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Demonstrate and consistently role model world-class customer service, performance in recruiting GCC supporters, and driving sales

• Maintain a high level of morale by fostering a positive workplace environment with a focus on motivating/encouraging employees to succeed and reach their potential

• Follow GCC Guidelines including policies and procedures to maintain a professional and respectful workplace with a high level of communication with visitors, NPS, colleagues, vendors, etc.

• Assist the SSM or Retail Store Manager in VES1 interviews as well as training visitor experience specialists 

• Delegate tasks to staff as needed 

• Act as an ambassador for Grand Canyon and Grand Canyon Conservancy by proactively greeting visitors, answering questions, and graciously providing information about the Park and GCC

• Support Grand Canyon National Park’s Junior Ranger program and assist in swearing in Junior Rangers who have completed the requirements

• Develop and maintain a broad knowledge of GCC products and proactively assist visitors with product      selection and purchases; upselling whenever possible.  

• Reconcile cash drawers, help resolve discrepancies and prepare nightly deposits

• Perform regular cycle counts to ensure inventory records are accurate and assist in year-end inventories.  Assisting with maintaining and adjusting inventory min and max levels to ensure accurate in-stock conditions.

• Assist in the design and implementation of merchandising changes/modifications and participate in store walkthroughs with the GCC retail team.

• Monitor the sales floor to ensure efficient and effective store operation, including managing checkout lines 

• Ensure the store is fully stocked and products are merchandised according to GCC guidelines and specifications.  Store supplies are ordered and maintained effectively.

• Maintain cleanliness and organization of all store areas, including the sales floor, break room, stock room, supply, and office areas

• Assist in the implementation of new GCC Retail projects and programs

• Assist in employee evaluations, as well as coaching employees and taking corrective actions as needed

• Monitor your email account and other GCC electronic communication channels to ensure the timely completion of tasks and activities. Communicate information to the team as needed.

• Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum three years of retail experience

• Minimum 1 year Visitor Experience Specialist Level 2 experience or similar level experience

• Competent Computer Skills, including experience with Microsoft Office products

• Willingness to work a flexible schedule based on business needs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays in any of GCC’s Park Stores. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND CHARACTERISTICS

• Supervisory or management experience

• Working knowledge of retail operations, computerized cash register operations, product merchandising, retail financials, and accounting

• Demonstrated ability to lead by example, act as a role model, and set the standard for excellence

• Ability to multitask and remain calm and focused in a fast-paced environment, and exercise good judgment

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Extensive knowledge of Grand Canyon National Park and the greater GCNP area, and GCC products & services

• Passion for the mission of GCC and Grand Canyon National Park

• The ability to promote and maintain a positive work environment

TOTAL COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, benefit-eligible, non-exempt position with a target salary of $21.00/hour. If needed, rental housing located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and owned by GCC may be available at a nominal cost to the employee. Specific requirements will be discussed during the interview process.

WORKING CONDITIONS 

• Standing for long periods, up to ten hours each day

• Frequent, extended periods of repetitive hand motion required by the operation of the cash register

• Occasional lifting of product boxes up to 40 pounds

• The work is indoors at elevations more than 7,000 feet above sea level
