About Camp Somerset for Girls
The summer camp experience stands as a truly unique and life-changing journey for children, offering an environment like no other, where lifelong memories are made, and personal growth is nurtured. That same experience is equally life-changing for a staff member.
At Somerset, we believe in the remarkable positive impact that summer camp has on young minds, and we wholeheartedly encourage our dedicated summer camp counselors to harness their creative abilities, share their unique interests and talents, and embark on personal challenges that parallel those they set for their campers.
Somerset is a warm and inclusive community with top-notch facilities, dynamic programming, incredible food, spectacular scenery, and amazing people. Working at Somerset is deeply rewarding, immensely challenging, and more fun than you can imagine. You'll be crying when it's over--trust us!
The Employee Experience
We are seeking individuals who thrive on working closely with children and possess a high level of expertise in one of our instructional (activity) areas. We’re seeking adults who are passionate about making a meaningful impact, not merely passing time between semesters or jobs.
Counselors live in a cabin with 12 campers and 3 other counselors. They also work in an activity area that fits their skills and passions. We have more than 30 activities with nine departments: Aquatics, Athletics, Creative Arts, Performing Arts, Movement, Adventure, Media, Camping, and Culinary Arts.
Beyond their primary responsibilities in the cabins and instructional areas, counselors serve as role models, mentors, and team coaches. They accompany campers to off-site adventures, including camping trips, whitewater rafting, amusement park visits, and more.
The summer kicks off with an intensive week-long staff orientation. During this time, we delve into camp policies, procedures, and expectations to ensure everyone is prepared for the summer ahead. Equally important, this week fosters staff bonding and lays the foundation for our close-knit camp community. Throughout the summer, Somerset is committed to ensuring our staff members are well-rested and well-nourished, and that they have ample opportunities to socialize and connect with one another.
Counselors have at least two periods off each day and five nights off per week, along with five full days off during the summer. In camp, there is a huge staff lounge with snacks, drinks, and great WiFi.

The dining hall stays open throughout the day for campers to stop by for a cold drink or a fresh piece of fruit. Lakefront afternoons always feature a choice of snack on the porch, like a fresh fruit smoothie, granola bar, or soft pretzel. Sunday mornings offer a “lazy morning” buffet with fresh pastries, made-to-order omelets, Belgian waffles, and fresh juice.
Employee Perks
We are proud members of a small community that supports local summer camps. We expect our staff members to represent camp and be equally respectful to our neighbors.
Many local establishments love when our counselors visit during their time off, whether it's Sunrise Bagel, the Ice Cream Shoppe, or the local movie theater. We're always connecting with new businesses in the area and seeking out offers that we can share with our staff.
Getting Here and Getting Around
Staff members with cars are welcome to drive to camp and park in our staff parking lot.
For those flying to Maine, we will have staff on hand to pick up at airports in Portland, Maine, and Boston, Massachusetts. We'll also provide transportation at the end of the summer.
Somerset offers many camp-sponsored off-site activities for staff, with transportation provided. We also have camp vehicles to rent, though the driver must be at least 21-years-old.
For Fun
A summer in Maine is truly special. In addition to all that Somerset has to offer, there is even more to do right outside our gates.
Waterville, Maine, is 10 minutes from camp and has plenty of options for food, coffee, bakeries, movies, Walmart, and more.
Portland, Maine, is a little more than an hour from camp and is a fantastic city for food, culture, shopping, and sightseeing.
Want something more outdoorsy? Bar Harbor, Camden, Portland, Freeport, Acadia, Moosehead Lake, and countless beaches are all within driving distance. Plus, we are only a few hours from Boston, Massachusetts, and the Canadian border.
