Teach & play on our beautiful lakeside campus in Maine!
Androscoggin is the summer home for 275 boys between 8 and 15 and 100 staff. Since 1907, campers and counselors have been playing sports, participating in a host of individual activities, exploring Maine, forming life-long friendships and sharing summers to remember.
We are located in Wayne, Maine, a small town 20 miles west of Augusta, the state capital. Our campus covers over 125 acres on the shores of Lake Androscoggin.
About Camp Androscoggin
Our campers are with us for one 7 and 1/2 week session and participate in a wide range of team sports and individual activities on land and water. Each counselor is a specialist in one of the activities we offer.
With all campers and counselors living and playing on a single campus, Androscoggin is a close-knit community in which every camper and every counselor is recognized and treated as an individual. We hope that within a short period of time everyone at camp will know everyone else and take advantage of the opportunity to spend time with such a diverse group of people. In addition, we hope that both campers and staff will learn to use and enjoy all the activities and facilities that we provide.
It is a great opportunity to work with kids in a relaxed, supportive environment. A chance to have fun and have an impact.
Dates for 2018 are June 14 to August 11.
The Employee Experience
Each summer, we try to create an environment in which every camper can improve their skills, gain an increased sense of independence and self-esteem and form strong and lasting friendships. Camp offers a setting in which campers can learn and grow and have a great time in the process. We also believe it offers staff members a unique opportunity to work with children and have a positive impact on their development. It’s a lot of work, a lot of fun and, we believe a very satisfying way to spend a summer. We hope you agree and look forward to hearing from you.
In addition to being an activity specialist, each counselor has responsibility for a bunk with 5 or 6 boys. Our male staff live in buildings with the boys, and our female staff are assigned to help supervise a bunk. While the amount of time spent in the cabin is not as great as the time spent at an activity, a counselor’s efforts in the bunk are perhaps the most important and potentially rewarding. The bunk is a camper’s home away from home for his 7 weeks at Androscoggin, and the rapport a camper develops with his bunk counselors is one of the key ingredients in the success of everyone’s summer.
In short, a counselor is a combination teacher, confidant, disciplinarian, and friend. To be a good counselor, one must be patient, caring and enthusiastic, and we are looking for individuals who not only have qualifications to teach an activity, but also have an interest in and commitment to children.
Room and Board
Room and board are included. Meals are served family style in the dining hall. Each week, boys sit at a different table with campers from other age groups, giving campers and counselors alike a chance to meet everyone in camp. Snacks are also provided throughout the day.
The salary, ranging from $1500 to $2500 for Activity Specialists, and negotiable based on experience for Department Heads, includes a travel allowance, room & board, and laundry. In addition, high-speed internet access is provided either by a wireless router for staff laptops or on camp computers in the staff lounge.
Getting Here and Getting Around
Staff members are welcome to bring their own cars. The nearest bus station is Augusta; the nearest major airport is Portland. We will pick up staff members at either location. Many staff fly into Boston's Logan airport. From Logan, there are a couple of easy options to get to either Portland or Augusta where a camp representative will be available for a pick up.
Enjoy the beauty of Northern New England on your days off. Whether it's a day at the ocean, a hike on the Appalachian Trail or a visit to the Old Port in Portland, you'll find lots of options within an hour or two drive. Back on campus, we encourage staff to use our facilities and equipment during their off-duty time, return to a favorite activity you haven't had a chance to do in a while or try something for the first time.
