Isle Royale Seaplanes

Isle Royale Seaplanes is looking for an Island Representative.  This person will live, and work on Isle Royale National Park, at the Rock Harbor location for 19 weeks, starting May 16th, and ending Sep 21, 2024.  The Island representative will:

• Represent Isle Royale Seaplanes.
• Communicate regularly with management on the "mainland" to recieve updates, and timely messages.
• Interact with customers regularly, informing them of the flight schedule, possible delays, and when to expect further information.
• Assist pilots with unloading/loading aircraft of luggage and passengers.
• Deliver luggage from the dock, to guest rooms, and vice versa.
• Operate a small utility cart to transport the luggage.
• Be able to lift up to 45lbs routinely, including a short walk uphill from the dock, to the utility vehicle, and from the vehicle into the rooms.

Compensation is $22/hr, and includes a private room, with shared dorm bath, and 3 meals a day.  The day is scheduled between 8am and 5:30pm, however, sometimes delays may extend the work day.

This job would be great for someone who enjoys interacting with customers, co-workers, making friends with the staff of other companies on the island, and is not afraid of handling heavy luggage routinely, or working closely with pilots and heavy machinery (seaplanes).  

Some key areas to note:

• Please pay attention to the dates listed above.  We need this person for the full date range.
• There is no cellular service on Isle Royale.
• Wifi is only located in select buildings, so you may need to walk to get nearest service.
• Communicate with management using wifi texting, hand-held radio, and satellite based telephone/texting.
• Rock Harbor, on Isle Royale, is very remote.  There is a small general store, a marina, a restaurant, guest lodge rooms, and employee dorm rooms + recreation hall.
• Please consider your interests when considering this job.  If you like outdoor activities, like kayaking, canoeing, rock hounding, hiking, camping, wildlife (wolves, moose), and rugged rocky shorelines, you will enjoy this environment.
• Isle Royale is fairly cold/cool all summer long.  It is surrounded by water that is 40°F, which moderates the temperature on land.
• It is also damp, mainly from a lot of fog.
• There is no town to go to.  No grocery store, movie theater, shopping centers... It is remote!
• There is a lodge, who you will work very closely with (there customers luggage), and they employ about 50 people.  There are also National Park Service employees.  There is ample opportunity to make friends with the other staff if you desire.
• Please research/google about Isle Royale National Park, and the Rock Harbor lodge, located on the island.
• Employee is responsible for arriving at our Seaplane Base in Hubbell, MI.  After that, we will provide transportation to Isle Royale, and familiarization with the job.
• There are no roads/bridges to Isle Royale.  All transportation to/from the island is by either boat, or seaplane.
• There is no hospital on Isle Royale.  There are EMTs, however, rescue off the island by boat or helicopter is weather dependant.
• Per regulations from the National Park Service, no pets of any kind are allowed on Isle Royale at all.
