Ready to work high above the forest while helping guests experience one of Alaska’s most memorable attractions?

As a Gondola Attendant at Icy Strait Point, you’ll play an essential role in keeping our gondola operations safe, smooth, and welcoming. Working alongside the Gondola Operator, you’ll help passengers board and exit cabins safely, monitor guest activity, maintain clean loading areas, and respond appropriately to unusual conditions.

You’ll interact with visitors from around the world while working in a spectacular outdoor setting above the forest. Every shift brings opportunities to deliver excellent guest service, support your teammates, and help create an unforgettable Alaska experience.


🚠 WHAT YOU’LL DO

Safety is your priority. Guest experience is your mission.

  • Manage Safe Boarding: Direct passenger traffic and help guests safely and orderly embark and disembark gondola cabins.

  • Monitor Guest Activity: Observe passengers as they enter, exit, and ride the aerial lift system. Provide guidance and assistance within your assigned work area.

  • Follow Safety Standards: Comply with Icy Strait Point policies, operating procedures, and applicable ANSI B-77 guidelines.

  • Recognize and Report Hazards: Immediately communicate unusual conditions, equipment concerns, or safety issues to the Gondola Operator.

  • Respond to Changing Conditions: Follow established procedures when unusual occurrences arise, including assisting passengers and supporting decisions to slow, stop, or continue lift operations as appropriate.

  • Control Access: Deny access to the aerial lift when necessary and in accordance with established procedures.

  • Support Emergency Response: Assist with assigned emergency evacuation duties, follow incident-reporting procedures, and help obtain appropriate first aid personnel.

  • Assist All Guests: Provide passenger assistance, including help with adaptive equipment when assigned.

  • Keep Stations Clean and Safe: Maintain orderly loading and unloading areas. Clean cabins and windows, and sweep, vacuum, or mop areas to help prevent slips, trips, falls, and other injuries.

  • Deliver Great Guest Service: Communicate clearly and professionally with guests of all ages, answer questions, and promote other Icy Strait Point venues and experiences.

  • Stay Trained and Prepared: Participate in required training and safety programs, maintain knowledge of operating and emergency procedures, and follow daily guidance from the Gondola Operator.

  • Work as a Team: Take initiative, collaborate with coworkers, and perform other duties as assigned.

🎯 WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Minimum Age: Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Safety First: A strong commitment to passenger safety, operational procedures, and hazard awareness.

  • Cultural Awareness: Knowledge of Tlingit culture or a willingness to learn and share cultural information respectfully.

  • Local Knowledge: Familiarity with the area's marine life, plants, animals, and birds—or enthusiasm for learning about the local environment.

  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly, patiently, and professionally with guests and coworkers.

  • Sound Judgment: Ability to remain calm, follow procedures, and respond appropriately during unusual or emergency situations.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the Gondola Operator and other team members.

  • Comfort with Heights: Must be comfortable working at significant elevations and around extreme heights.

  • Outdoor Readiness: Willingness to work in changing Alaska weather, including rain, wind, and snow.

  • Guest-Focused Attitude: Enjoy interacting with the public and helping visitors have a positive experience.

  • Training and Flexibility: Willingness to complete required training and follow established safety procedures.

  • Remote Work Readiness: Willingness to live and work in a rural, remote community.

Please note: This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug testing. Icy Strait Point is a non-smoking facility, with designated outdoor smoking areas.


💪 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

This role requires physical activity, alertness, and comfort working around heights and aerial lift operations.

  • Frequent movement in and out of gondola cabins and throughout loading and unloading areas.

  • Work at elevations of up to approximately 1,600 feet, with regular exposure to significant heights.

  • Ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, and perform moderate physical activity throughout a shift.

  • Ability to lift and carry more than 25 pounds.

  • Ability to recognize potential safety hazards and respond appropriately.

  • Potential exposure to hazardous conditions during emergency evacuation procedures.

  • Frequent outdoor work in rain, wind, snow, and other inclement weather.

  • Ability to remain on your feet for extended periods while assisting and communicating with guests.

  • Willingness to travel to and from Hoonah by small plane or ferry.

  • Ability to walk and drive on gravel roads in changing weather conditions.
