We have a core staff of approximately 34 full time employees working in Gardiner and Bozeman, Montana.

In addition, we have approximately 40 seasonal employees working in Summer (May through October) and approximately 15 in Winter (December through March).

Nearly 75 people volunteer for Yellowstone Forever in a given year.  

The Park is in transition between seasons (April and November), with the roads and operations generally closed to the public.

They are knowledgeable about Yellowstone’s natural, geologic, and cultural history and are experienced outdoor leaders who create a comfortable learning environment while keeping their learners safe on programs. Field Educators are frontline staff responsible for positively representing Yellowstone Forever through program delivery and program support.

    Position: Field Educator

    Location: Gardiner, Montana

    Reports To: Education Program Manager

    Status: Seasonal / Non-exempt

    Compensation range: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour (DOE) + tips

    Dates: In-person training is required and will begin Monday, April 11, 2022. Training will run through Friday, April 29, 2022. Programs begin Monday, May 2, 2022, and go through Saturday, October 8, 2022.

    Yellowstone Forever (YF) is the official nonprofit partner of Yellowstone National Park. Our mission is to protect, preserve, and enhance Yellowstone National Park through education and philanthropy. YF connects people to Yellowstone through outstanding visitor experiences and educational programs and translates those experiences into lifelong support of the park and philanthropic investment in its future. Our educational programming and products help people enhance their understanding and appreciation of the wildlife, natural wonders, and cultural history of the park. YF’s operations include Park Stores in and around Yellowstone; the Yellowstone Forever Institute, which offers in-depth educational programing for people of all ages; and a supporter program which raises funds for priority park projects.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Prepare and deliver engaging and organized programs to a diverse range of learners with the goal of connecting them to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and building a constituency for preservation.
    • Demonstrate effective communication and teaching skills; adapt teaching methods to learners and situations and empower learners to form their own opinions about complex issues.
    • Articulate the Yellowstone Forever mission and represent it accurately and positively; encourage participation in the organization through education and philanthropy.
    • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of Yellowstone National Park and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, to include (but not limited to) the natural, cultural, and geologic history, wildlife, and management issues. 
    • Understand and follow YF policies and procedures and National Park Service regulations by emphasizing the protection of park resources, Leave No Trace practices, and adherence to YF’s Code of Ethics.
    • Operate and maintain YF vehicles, including 14-passenger minibuses and other vehicles, safely and defensively, to also include passing and maintaining successful YF driver training. Follow appropriate vehicle safety checklists pre and post trip throughout the season, and clean buses regularly (washing, fueling up, sweeping, etc.)
    • Perform field-based risk management duties during programs by anticipating and managing potential hazards or group issues that might arise due to wildlife, terrain, weather, or student attitude/ability.
    • Prepare students for the field through pre-course and daily orientations.
    • Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with Yellowstone Forever staff, contract employees, volunteers, board members, and partners.
    • Assist with teaching material and equipment management.
    • Travel into Yellowstone, throughout the Greater Yellowstone area, as required.
    • Other tasks as assigned by the Education Program Manager, or other designated leadership.
       

    Basic Qualifications: 

    • Strong commitment to education and the mission of Yellowstone Forever.
    • Professional experience in teaching, guiding, environmental education, or interpretation.
    • Demonstrated outdoor leadership skills.

    • Current CPR and Wilderness First Aid certifications, or willingness to attain and maintain these certifications.
    • This position involves driving YF vehicles, therefore, applicants must be 21 years of age or older, maintain a valid US driver’s license, and maintain a favorable driving record for insurance purposes. The ability to pass and maintain a Department of Transportation medical exam and YF driver training.
    • A satisfactory criminal background check and motor vehicle record is a condition of employment.
    • Willingness to work a flexible schedule away from home including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
    • Willingness to work away from home on a weekly basis, as some programs are based in the park interior days at a time in the park interior for days at a time (hotel lodging and food provided when in the interior).
    • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
    • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, hike up to 12 miles on uneven terrain, and work outdoors in all climate conditions common to the region while carrying a pack weighing up to 40 pounds.
    • Ability to represent YF in a courteous and professional manner.
    • A collaborative attitude with demonstrated ability to work effectively, and professionally as a part of a team.

     

    Preferred Qualifications: 

    • Working knowledge of ecology, geology, and natural and cultural history of Yellowstone National Park and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
    • Demonstrated outdoor leadership skills.
    • Certification in NAI training programs including Certified Interpretive Guide, Certified Interpretive Host, Leave No Trace, or willingness to obtain these certifications as needed.
    • Proven teamwork and communication skills.
    • Experience working in a non-profit environment.
    • Experience working with both youth and adult learners.
    • Wilderness medical training, Wilderness First Responder certification.

     

    Compensation: 

    This is a seasonal, non-exempt (hourly) position, which will be based in Gardiner, MT. Compensation is based upon experience, pay range is $15:00 - $17:00 per hour, and typically is 40 hours/week. This position is not eligible for health, dental, and vision benefits. Benefits of this position include knowing that your efforts directly benefit Yellowstone National Park and having the opportunity to work in one of the world’s premiere areas.

    Housing: 

    Shared employee housing is available to rent in Gardiner, MT on a limited basis. Our employee housing is limited as it is a 3-bedroom shared unit, with other employees and volunteers. Our policy does not allow for pets or couples in shared housing. Living in employee housing is not a requirement of this position.

    The Director of Human Resources plays a critical role in fostering Yellowstone Forever’s workplace culture and the recruitment, hiring, performance, and engagement of employees and volunteers. This position leads and proactively develops and manages initiatives, programs, and policies to measure and enhance staff performance, consistent with best practices. The Director of Human Resources closely partners with the President & CEO and senior staff to develop and implement programs, policies, trainings, and services to help enhance the staff experience, in order to attract, develop, engage, and retain the uniquely talented people required to achieve the mission of Yellowstone Forever. This position oversees recruiting, payroll/benefits administration, strategic plan, strategic work plan, staff performance oversight and management, staff engagement, workplace culture initiatives, staff relations, and legal/regulatory compliance around employment and benefits. Further, this position will lead recruitment and management of our volunteers, and related support. This position is a member of the senior leadership team of Yellowstone Forever and provides guidance on related matters to the President & CEO and other senior leaders.  The ability to direct multiple priorities with minimal supervision is essential. Success in this position requires outstanding organizational skills, initiative, deep knowledge of employment and volunteer practices, interpersonal relationship building, and proven leadership skills.     • Maintain an expert understanding of Yellowstone Forever’s desired workplace culture and work closely with the President & CEO and senior staff to create long-term strategies and drive key initiatives to promote and achieve a culture of excellence and employee engagement.
    • Monitor staff and volunteer feedback, relevant data, and metrics to share with leadership and identify areas for improvement.
    • Drive high levels of workforce performance and enrich staff engagement by developing, implementing, and overseeing employee and volunteer programs including recruitment, hiring, orientation/onboarding, organizational development and regular performance management.
    • Provide strategic and operational leadership in the design, development, implementation, administration, and communication of YF’s total rewards programs, including payroll/benefits management, in addition to management of employee and volunteer housing needs.

    • Develop and manage annual department budgets and timelines.

    • Lead initiatives to periodically review and update the Employee and Volunteer handbooks, tracking and incorporating applicable developments in employment law and industry best practices.
    • Work closely with finance on retirement plan administration, including coordinating delivery of required communications to plan participants and lead the annual plan audit.
    • Lead review of employee concerns and complaints, coordinating as needed with legal, to address and mitigate potential risks.
    • Build and maintain a network of nonprofit HR professionals.
    • Represent Yellowstone Forever and its mission accurately and positively.

    Basic Qualifications:

    • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and SPHR, SHRM-SCP, or other relevant certification.
    • Eight or more years of Human Resources Management experience.
    • Significant knowledge of local, state, and national employment laws, regulations, compliance standards, and best practices related to employment and volunteer management.
    • Experience with payroll and benefits administration, including ERISA retirement plan administration and annual audits.
    • Experience with managing employee relations matters, including internal investigations.

    The Delivery Driver plays a critical role in Yellowstone Forever’s operations, working with other warehouse staff and park store associates to ship product from the warehouse to Yellowstone Forever Park Stores.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Ensure accurate and timely delivery of product using a warehouse cargo truck, including wholesale orders to gateway communities;
    • Participate in the shared duty of mail run and other deliveries as needed;
    • Prepare all transfer orders utilizing the warehouse management system to include picking, packing the merchandise, and preparing the packing slip for the store;
    • Embark merchandise in delivery trucks using appropriate tools;
    • Perform basic truck maintenance;
    • Ability to complete work duties with minimal supervision;
    • Load, transport, and deliver items to YF Park Stores and others, as needed, in a safe, timely manner;

    The Park Store Associate is a critical role in the daily operation of Yellowstone Forever Park stores at visitor centers and contact stations throughout the Greater Yellowstone National Park Area. The associate represents “the face” of the organization by working on the front lines and often in partnership with naturalist rangers from the National Park Service. Associates assist and engage visitors with purchases of educational products, explain our supporter program and recruit new members, and help answer visitor questions about Yellowstone National Park. Success in this position requires outstanding visitor/customer service skills and a passion for Yellowstone National Park and its preservation, and sharing that passion with others.

    Housing: Options are available. Majority of housing available is RV sites, for these you bring your own RV. Limited other housing options are available to rent, single unit, two bedroom, and shared multi-bedroom units.

    The Retail Store Lead plays a critical role in overseeing day-to-day Yellowstone Forever Park Store operations in assigned stores at visitor centers and contact stations around the greater Yellowstone National Park area. The Retail Store Lead oversees staff assigned to specific stores as defined by the Retail Operations and Visual Merchandising Manager and is responsible for the daily execution of effective retail operations. To include training staff, inventory management, daily/weekly/monthly reporting, store cleanliness and presentation, tracking and relaying key performance indicators (KPIs), and overseeing related systems, working to provide the highest quality visitor experience possible. Closely coordinating with the Retail Operations and Visual Merchandising Manager, the Retail Store Lead is also responsible for executing the retail merchandising, marketing, and communication plans in their assigned Park Store and proactively looking for ways to enhance the visitor experience and developing recommendations to senior retail staff in the process. Additionally, the Retail Store Lead will assist in selecting, training, and developing Park Store Associates. Success in this position requires excellent supervisory skills and customer engagement, experience capturing and analyzing KPIs and managing core operational systems, unrelenting pursuit of excellence, and a drive for continual growth and improvement.

    Primary Responsibilities: 

    • Effectively manage the customer experience throughout the store by executing merchandising plans, making recommendations, and testing product stories through creative displays and merchandising and monitoring and reporting on these tests;
    • Actively greet and engage customers and be a Yellowstone Forever enthusiast related to our retail products, institute courses and offerings, the purpose of our philanthropy efforts, and the projects that we support annuall;y
    • Provide training and mentoring to Park Store Associates and foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with a high level of accurate execution, and support Park Store Associates to ensure their ability to perform tasks as required;
    • Capture, analyze, and relay retail industry KPIs and lead staff to achieve the goals set for the assigned store, informed by captured KPIs;
    • Support the Retail Operations and Visual Merchandising Manager with budget planning and forecasting for the store and control and manage expenses as they directly relate to their assigned store operations, given established budget;
    • Work with the Yellowstone Forever facilities team to ensure displays, lighting, fixtures, and the store's physical appearance are maintained to the highest standards;
    • Work with the Retail Operations and Visual Merchandising Manager and merchants to set product layouts in stores and deliver on the product distribution and visual merchandising plans;
    • Develop a firm understanding and ability to navigate the retail back-end software systems to handle and track the accurate movement of inventory, stock levels, and inventory turns related to their store;
    • Be a POS systems expert related to the iPad register screens, software sales systems, and credit card processing equipment and how these systems interact and communicate with each other;
    • Work with organizational leadership and park partners to maximize store schedules, ensure appropriate staffing levels, and maintain staffing schedules;
    • Process all transactions using the POS and other systems, and become a problem solver as it relates to these systems to keep transactions flowing efficiently through the store;
    • Have a passion for creating and delivering a superior customer experience;
    • Ensure that the store is held to the highest cleanliness and presentation standards;
    • Work collaboratively within the Yellowstone Forever organization to ensure that Yellowstone Forever's procedures and standards carry out operations within the store;
    • Collaborate with Finance staff to submit accurate and complete daily, weekly, and monthly reports and ensure proper levels of cash are maintained;
    • Ensure staff responds to questions about the park by providing accurate information or referring visitors to another source when necessary;
    • Ensure the active promotion of the Yellowstone Forever Supporter and Institute programs;
    • Develop and motivate staff to achieve optimal performance;

    Basic Qualifications:  

    • 1-2 years of retail store experience, including use and performance related to retail industry KPIs;
    • 1-2 years of supervisory experience;
    • Experience in high volume (rush period) retail environment;
    • Team player with excellent oral and written communication skills;
    • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment;
    • Proven ability to quickly learn and apply new systems, processes, and applications;
    • Experience providing excellent customer service;
    • Self-motivated with a sound approach to problem-solving and timely task completion;

    Volunteers

    The Campus and Program Volunteer supports the educational programs and Yellowstone Overlook field campus. Each educational program is supported by one of our Campus and Program Volunteers. Field seminar programs are based at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch field campus, the Yellowstone Forever classrooms in Gardiner, or another location in the park. The Yellowstone Overlook field campus is based in Gardiner, and provides a location for adult students and youth groups to stay in comfortable lodging during their stay while participating in YF programs. Campus and Program Volunteers welcome and host students, orient them to Yellowstone Forever and the facility, assist instructors in logistical aspects of courses, drive the 14-passenger mini-bus for all field trips, assist in risk management in the field, and maintain and clean campus facilities. Campus and Program Volunteers also provide linen service and basic maintenance services at the Yellowstone Overlook field campus. Success in this position requires a welcoming demeanor, being a responsible and independent worker and being able to assist with the needs of various students. Depending upon the needs of Yellowstone Forever, Campus and Program Volunteers may spend more time or less on certain duties.

    • Ability to maintain friendly, cooperative working relationships with a diverse population
    • Willingness to keep facility and vehicles clean, safe and maintained
    • Ability to perform basic cabin cleaning and maintenance tasks proficiently
    • Physically able to perform basic maintenance skills, lift up to 40 pounds, and to accompany courses into the field on hikes of 2-10 miles at elevation on uneven terrain
    • Demonstrated ability to anticipate student and facility needs and work with minimal supervision
    • Attention to safety and risk management
    • CPR certification (earned prior to starting work) and Wilderness First Aid certification (generally provided in training)
    • Ability to pass a DOT Medical Exam, only Program Volunteer positions
    • Willingness to support the needs of Yellowstone Forever through multiple assigned tasks in a volunteer capacity

    Benefits:

    This is a volunteer position located at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch, inside Yellowstone National Park and at the Yellowstone Overlook Field Campus, just outside the northern gate of Yellowstone National Park. Campus and Program Volunteers will be provided with a comfortable cabin that may be shared with other volunteers. Volunteers may be provided a nominal fee of $15 per day to help offset out of pocket expenses. This may be taxable income; therefore, volunteers will receive a 1099 from Yellowstone Forever. Volunteers must provide their own health insurance for any health issues unrelated to the volunteer duties. Yellowstone Forever volunteers also receive a 30% discount on most Park Stores products. Discounts on other courses and products are also offered.  Benefits of this position include knowing that your efforts directly benefit Yellowstone National Park and having the opportunity to work in one of the world’s premiere wilderness areas.
