We have a core staff of approximately 85 full time employees working in Gardiner and Bozeman, Montana.

In addition, we have approximately 75 seasonal employees working in Summer (May through October) and approximately 20 in Winter (December through March).

Nearly 100 people volunteer for Yellowstone Forever in a given year.  

The Park is in transition between seasons (April and November), with the roads and operations generally closed to the public.

    Summary Description:

     

    Yellowstone Forever is the official nonprofit partner of Yellowstone National Park. We partner with Yellowstone National Park to create opportunities for all people to experience, enhance, and preserve Yellowstone forever. Our combined operations include 11 educational Park Stores with gross sales of over $5.1 million; the Yellowstone Forever Institute, which offers more than 600 in-depth programs each year; a supporter program of over 73,000 Yellowstone enthusiasts raising funds to support critical park priority projects; and an online community of over 300,000 worldwide. Yellowstone Forever has provided over $106 million of cash support and over $64 million of in-kind support since 1933. Our mission of engagement and support through education and fundraising for the park will ensure Yellowstone remains for generations to come. 


    The Park Store Associate is a critical role in the daily operation of Yellowstone Forever Park stores at visitor centers and contact stations throughout the Greater Yellowstone National Park Area. The associate represents “the face” of the organization by working on the front lines and often in partnership with naturalist rangers from the National Park Service. Associates assist and engage visitors with purchases of educational products, explain our supporter program and recruit new members, and help answer visitor questions about Yellowstone National Park. Success in this position requires outstanding visitor/customer service skills and a passion for Yellowstone National Park and its preservation, and sharing that passion with others.

     

    Primary Responsibilities:

     

    • Actively greet visitors and be familiar with all merchandise in order to assist customers in making purchases
    • Actively promote Yellowstone Forever’s supporter program and encourage visitors to participate by offering the opportunity to join to as many customers as possible
    • Become an advocate for Yellowstone Forever Institute and the classes and course offerings and promote them to our customers and supporters
    • Ring up sales using a Point of Sale (POS) computer system
    • Be comfortable with technology and problem solving to provide superior customer service
    • Complete daily cash reports
    • Respond to questions about the park by providing accurate information or, when necessary, referring the visitor to another source
    • Stock and clean the store and keep it held to the highest presentation standards
    • Work collaboratively with staff across the organization and cooperating partners
    • Represent Yellowstone Forever and its mission accurately and positively
    • Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with YF employees, volunteers and partners
    • Travel into Yellowstone, throughout the Greater Yellowstone area and other, as required
    • Other tasks as assigned by Park Store Lead and Retail Operations Territory Manager, or other designated leadership
    • Have a passion for creating and delivering a superior customer experience
    • Work collaboratively within the Yellowstone Forever organization to ensure that operations within the store are carried out in accordance with Yellowstone Forever’s procedures and standards

    • Actively greet customers and be familiar with all merchandise in order to assist customers in making purchases

       

    Basic Qualifications: 

     

    • High school graduation or G.E.D.

    • Demonstrated customer service skills

    • Proficiency in using computers and internet applications

    • Ability to proficiently use a cash register and adding machine

    • Ability to accurately handle cash and complete daily closing reports

    • Ability to work at elevations approaching 8,000 feet

    • Strong commitment to the mission of Yellowstone Forever

    • Ability to sometimes work a flexible schedule, which may include nights and weekends when needed

    • Ability to lift boxes/equipment weighing up to 40 pounds (with support of lift equipment)

    • Ability to represent YF in a courteous and professional manner

    • This position involves driving YF vehicles, therefore applicants must hold and maintain a valid US driver’s license, and maintain a favorable driving record for insurance purposes

    • A satisfactory criminal background check are conditions of employment

    The Retail Park Store Guide plays a critical role in the field overseeing the active engagement, greeting, and recommendations to our customers. The Guide is the “face” of Yellowstone Forever to our customers and visitors in our day-to-day Yellowstone Forever Park Store operations. As a brand evangelist, the Guide must be a knowledge expert about Yellowstone Forever and our retail product, institute courses and instruction offerings, and our philanthropy efforts and supporter programs. Ensure that there is a continual effort to provide the highest quality visitor experience possible. Closely coordinate with the Retail Operations Territory Manager in executing the retail merchandising, marketing, and communication plans in assigned Park Stores and proactively looking for ways to enhance the visitor experience. Success in this position requires an exceptional attitude and desire for proactive customer engagement, an unrelenting pursuit of excellence, and a drive for continual growth and improvement.

     

    Primary Responsibilities:

     

    • Actively greet and engage customers and be a Yellowstone Forever evangelist as it relates to our retail products, institute courses and offerings, and the purpose of our philanthropy efforts and the projects that we support annually
    • Lead by example with the highest level of customer engagement by being a knowledge expert about Yellowstone National Park and the offerings from Yellowstone Forever
    • Ensure that all assigned stores are held to the highest degree of customer engagement and positive representation of Yellowstone Forever
    • Provide training and mentoring to Park Store Associates and foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with a high level of accurate execution, and support full-time and seasonal Park Store Associates to ensure their ability to perform tasks as required
    • Work with the retail merchants to set product layouts per store and work with store leads to deliver on the product distribution and visual merchandising plans in each store
    • Work with the Yellowstone Forever facilities team to ensure displays, lighting, fixtures and the physical appearance of the store are maintained to the highest standards
    • Be a POS systems expert as it relates to the iPad register screens, software sales systems, and credit card processing equipment and how these systems interact and communicate with each other
    • Provide training and mentoring to park store associates to create a core knowledgeable staff that understand our product offerings including divisional programs from the Institute and philanthropy divisions

    The Retail Store Lead plays a critical role overseeing day-to-day Yellowstone Forever Park Store operations in his/her assigned store at visitor centers and contact stations in an around the greater Yellowstone National Park area. The Retail Store Lead oversees staff assigned to specific stores as defined by the Director of Retail Operations, and is responsible for daily execution of effective retail operations, including training staff, inventory management, daily/weekly/monthly reporting, store cleanliness and presentation, and tracking, and relaying key performance indicators (KPIs) and overseeing related systems, working to provide the highest quality visitor experience possible. Closely coordinating with the Retail Operations Territory Manager, the Retail Store Lead is also responsible for executing the retail merchandising, marketing, and communication plans in his/her Park Store and proactively looking for ways to enhance visitor experience and developing recommendations to senior retail staff in the process. The Retail Store Lead will assist in the selection, training, and development of Park Store Associates. Success in this position requires excellent supervisory skills and customer engagement, experience with capturing and analyzing KPIs and managing core operational systems, an unrelenting pursuit of excellence, and a drive for continual growth and improvement.

     

    Primary Responsibilities:

     

    • Effectively manage the customer experience throughout the store through execution of merchandising plans, making recommendations and testing product stories through creative displays and merchandising and monitoring and reporting on these tests
    • Actively greet and engage customers and be a Yellowstone Forever evangelist as it relates to our retail products, institute courses and offerings, and the purpose of our philanthropy efforts and the projects that we support annually
    • Provide training and mentoring to Park Store Associates and foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with a high level of accurate execution, and support full-time and seasonal Park Store Associates to ensure their ability to perform tasks as required
    • Capture, analyze, and relay retail industry KPIs and lead staff to achieve the goals set for the assigned store, informed by captured KPIs
    • Support the Retail Operations Territory Manager with budget planning and forecasting for the store and control and manage expenses as they directly relate to his/her assigned store operations, in view of established budget
    • Work with the Yellowstone Forever facilities team to ensure displays, lighting, fixtures and the physical appearance of the store are maintained to the highest standards
    • Work with the retail territory manager and merchants to set product layouts in his/her store and deliver on the product distribution and visual merchandising plans
    • Develop a firm understanding and ability to navigate the retail back-end software systems to handle and track accurate movement of inventory, stock levels, and inventory turns as they relate to his/her store
    • Be a POS systems expert as it relates to the iPad register screens, software sales systems, and credit card processing equipment and how these systems interact and communicate with each other
    • Work with organizational leadership and park partners to maximize store schedules and ensure appropriate staffing levels and maintain staffing schedules

    • Process all transactions using the POS and other systems, and become a problem solver as it relates to these systems to keep transactions flowing efficiently through the store

    • Ensure that the store is held to the highest cleanliness and presentation standards

    Compensation:

    This is a seasonal, non-exempt position based in Gardiner, Montana. The hourly rate is based upon experience, with overtime paid for hours in excess of 40 hours per week. Affordable housing is available for rent in Gardiner, Montana. Yellowstone Forever employees also receive a 30% discount on most Park Stores products and a free Yellowstone Forever Institute Field Seminar each year. Subsidized shared seasonal housing may be available rent. Discounts on other courses and products are also offered.  Benefits of this position include knowing that your efforts directly benefit Yellowstone National Park and having the opportunity to work in one of the world’s premiere wilderness areas.

    The Warehouse Associate plays a critical role in Yellowstone Forever’s operations, working with staff and vendors to receive, store, move, pack and ship materials from the warehouse. Success in this position requires a high degree of efficiency while ensuring accuracy and timeliness of incoming and outgoing inventory shipments.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Conduct incoming and outgoing inventory processing
    • Ensure accurate and timely delivery of product using a warehouse cargo truck, including wholesale orders to gateway communities
    • Participate in the shared duty of mail run, leaflet run, and other deliveries as needed
    • Work closely with Park Store and Contact Center staff to meet store needs and inventory accuracy
    • Effectively communicate warehouse-related information across the organization, National Park Service, and all Park partners
    • Represent YF and its mission accurately and positively
    • Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with YF employees, volunteers and partners

    Primary Responsibilities:

     

    • Participate in managing Yellowstone Forever’s Retail inventory supply chain and e-commerce fulfillment operations
    • Develop and motivate staff to achieve optimal performance

    The Campus and Program Volunteer supports the YF Institute field seminars and Yellowstone Overlook field campus. Each YF Institute field seminar is supported by one of our Campus and Program Volunteers. Field seminars are based at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch field campus, the Yellowstone Forever classrooms in Gardiner, or another location in the park. The Yellowstone Overlook field campus is based in Gardiner, and provides a location for adult students and youth groups to stay in comfortable lodging during their stay while participating in YF programs. Campus and Program Volunteers welcome and host students, orient them to Yellowstone Forever and the facility, assist instructors in logistical aspects of courses, drive the 14-passenger mini-bus for all field trips, assist in risk management in the field, and maintain and clean campus facilities. Campus and Program Volunteers also provide linen service and basic maintenance services at the Yellowstone Overlook field campus. Success in this position requires a welcoming demeanor, being a responsible and independent worker and being able to assist with the needs of various students. Depending upon the needs of Yellowstone Forever, Campus and Program Volunteers may spend more time or less on certain duties.

    Bob and Connie Landis have carried on that legacy of artistic and scientific excellence in the Yellowstone region through the creation of award winning art and teaching that art to future generations. The Landis Artist and Scientist Residency Program will provide artists and scientists an unparalleled opportunity to live and work in Yellowstone country.

    The Yellowstone Forever Resident Artists are active artist who produce original art inspired by Yellowstone National Park. Artists of all disciplines and experience levels are welcome to apply for the Landis Artist-in-Residence program, from painters to ceramists to musicians and poets. Cross-disciplinary artists are encouraged to apply, particularly those who integrate science into their process.

    The focus of the art must fall within at least one area of Yellowstone National Park’s Primary Interpretive Themes (Geology, Geothermal Features, Natural Resource Preservation, Wildlife, Ecosystem, Human Culture and History, First National Park, Wildness, Climate Change & Sustainability, Management). 

    Through the Landis Artist-in-Residency Program, Yellowstone Forever will provide a living space for visiting artist who are actively creating work focused on Yellowstone National Park.

    The art residency runs year-round for periods from 2 weeks to 6 months. A committee of working artists and Yellowstone Forever staff will review and make the final decisions.

    Artist-in-Residence will:

    • Produce original art inspired by Yellowstone National Park
    • If scheduling allows, provide one public engagement event during each approximately two-week stay: This may be a workshop, demonstration, art program to the local school, reading, or lecture. Please feel free to propose ideas to the Yellowstone Forever Institute staff.
    • Provide a non-exclusive perpetual license to use digital images of art produced during the residency for the purpose of promoting this residency program and Yellowstone National Park.

    Eligibility: 

    • Must be an active working artist with art inspired by nature, public lands, or people’s relationship to nature

    • Must be a Principle Investigator or affiliated with a Principle Investigator conducting approved research either in Yellowstone National Park or at the Heritage and Research Center
    • Research topics must fall within at least one area of Yellowstone National Park’s Primary Interpretive Themes (outlined above)

    The Equipment and Vehicle Volunteer provides logistical support for programs that originate out of Yellowstone Forever’s Gardiner, MT office. The Equipment and Vehicle Volunteer will work with the Fleet and Logistics Manager to ensure equipment needed for programs is maintained and cleaned. The Equipment and Vehicle Volunteer also provides support to field instructors by staging needed equipment for programs, and putting equipment away when it returns from a program. Success in this position requires attention to detail, flexibility and a willingness to work a split shift. This is a seasonal volunteer position from May through September.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Maintain equipment that is used for programs based in Gardiner, and equipment that is sent in from other locations
    • Inventory equipment used in programs originating from Gardiner
    • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and organization of equipment storage area

    This is a volunteer position located at the North Entrance Education Center, just outside the northern gate of Yellowstone National Park. Volunteers in Gardiner will be provided with shared housing that may include roommates. These units include comfortable furniture, pots, pans, and dishes.  Volunteers will be provided a nominal fee of $15 per day to help offset out of pocket expenses. This may be taxable income; therefore, volunteers will receive a 1099 from Yellowstone Forever.     Naturalist I are part of a progressive and dedicated Institute team responsible for the largely independent development and delivery of in-depth world-class educational programs in Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding ecosystem, important to executing the mission, drawing on expertise in the field(s).

     

    As a naturalist, they must be knowledgeable about many aspects of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem including the natural history, ecology, geology, and cultural history of the region; the identification, biology, behavior, and habitat of the wildlife; and ongoing resource management issues and preservation efforts in the ecosystem.

     

    As an educator, they independently teach a wide array of programs for children and adults, ranging in length from one hour to over a week, and incorporating many disciplines including both art and science. Program types include youth and college, private tours, teacher workshops, adult programs, and philanthropic programs.

     

    They are experienced outdoor leaders who create a comfortable learning environment while keeping their participants safe in inclement weather, wildlife habitat, and while driving them in Institute vehicles.

     

    Primary Responsibilities

    Instruction and Engagement

    • Prepare, support, and teach with minimal supervision a wide variety of exceptional, field-based, educational programs, reflecting YF’s educational philosophy, to various ages, demographics, fitness levels, and learning styles with the goal of connecting visitors to Yellowstone and building a constituency for preservation
    • Assist with the coordination of teaching material and equipment management
    • Represent and promote Yellowstone Forever at conferences, on press trips, supporter events, outreach events, and in the field
    • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of Yellowstone National Park and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem including the natural, cultural, and geologic history, wildlife and management issues, and conservation challenges
    • Articulate the Yellowstone Forever mission and encourage participation in the organization through philanthropic support, volunteerism, and Institute programs
    • Promote Yellowstone Forever philanthropy-supported park projects and retail operations within educational programs
    • Emphasize the protection of park resources, Leave No Trace practices, and adherence to YF’s Code of Ethics and regulations

     

    Risk Management and Safety

    • Operate vehicles, including 14-passenger minibuses and other vehicles, safely and defensively and follow appropriate vehicle safety checklists
    • Anticipate and manage potential hazards or group issues that might arise due to wildlife, terrain, weather, or student attitude/ability
    • Prepare students for the field through pre-course and daily orientations
    • Exercise sound judgment and manage groups effectively under changing, stressful, or emergency conditions
    • Follow YF emergency procedures and facilitate emergency response

     

    Professionalism

    • Understand and follow YF policies and procedures and National Park Service regulations
    • Take initiative in communications with organizational management

    Basic Qualifications

    • 1-2 years of professional experience in teaching, environmental education, or interpretation
    • A bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution or equivalent experience
    • Experience teaching inquiry-based, student-centered programs
    • Strong commitment to the educational mission of Yellowstone Forever
    • Current CPR and Wilderness First Aid certifications, or willingness to attain and maintain these certifications
    • This position involves driving YF vehicles, therefore applicants must be 21 years of age or older, maintain a valid US driver’s license for a minimum of two years, and maintain a favorable driving record for insurance purposes
    • The ability to pass and maintain a Department of Transportation medical exam and YF driver training
    • A satisfactory criminal background check is a condition of employment
    • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
    • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, hike up to twelve miles on uneven terrain, cross-country ski, snowshoe, and work outdoors in all weather conditions common to the region while carrying a pack weighing up to 40 pounds
    • Ability to represent YF in a courteous and professional manner
    • Team player with excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to represent YF in a courteous and professional manner
    • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and park partners
    • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in relevant field of study

    • Demonstrated experience with distance learning, digital education, educational videos, webinars, webcasts, script writing, and digital program assessment
    • Direct experience creating and teaching curriculum for K-12 students

    As a Citizen Science Program Specialist, this position is further responsible for the independent development and support of the citizen science program. With that specialty, the individual will be expected to serve as one of the primary resources supporting that focus area within the Institute. As an educational leader, this position provides mentorship and support of fellow instructors.

     

    They are experienced outdoor leaders who create a comfortable learning environment while keeping their participants safe in inclement weather, wildlife habitat, and while driving them in Institute vehicles.
