We have a core staff of approximately 34 full time employees working in Gardiner and Bozeman, Montana.

In addition, we have approximately 40 seasonal employees working in Summer (May through October) and approximately 15 in Winter (December through March).

Nearly 75 people volunteer for Yellowstone Forever in a given year.  

The Park is in transition between seasons (April and November), with the roads and operations generally closed to the public.

  • Campus and Program Volunteer

    Fleet and Field Campus

    The Campus and Program Volunteer supports the educational programs and Yellowstone Overlook field campus. Each educational program is supported by one of our Campus and Program Volunteers. Field seminar programs are based at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch field campus, the Yellowstone Forever classrooms in Gardiner, or another location in the park. The Yellowstone Overlook field campus is based in Gardiner, and provides a location for adult students and youth groups to stay in comfortable lodging during their stay while participating in YF programs. Campus and Program Volunteers welcome and host students, orient them to Yellowstone Forever and the facility, assist instructors in logistical aspects of courses, drive the 14-passenger mini-bus for all field trips, assist in risk management in the field, and maintain and clean campus facilities. Campus and Program Volunteers also provide linen service and basic maintenance services at the Yellowstone Overlook field campus. Success in this position requires a welcoming demeanor, being a responsible and independent worker and being able to assist with the needs of various students. Depending upon the needs of Yellowstone Forever, Campus and Program Volunteers may spend more time or less on certain duties.

    Status: Volunteer; We're looking for a minimum 6-week commitment.

    Summary Description:

    Yellowstone Forever (YF) is the official nonprofit partner of Yellowstone National Park. Our mission is to protect, preserve, and enhance Yellowstone National Park through education and philanthropy. YF connects people to Yellowstone through outstanding visitor experiences and educational programs and translates those experiences into lifelong support of the park and philanthropic investment in its future. Our educational programming and products help people enhance their understanding and appreciation of the wildlife, natural wonders, and cultural history of the park. YF’s operations include Park Stores in and around Yellowstone; the Yellowstone Forever Institute, which offers in-depth educational programing for people of all ages; and a supporter program which raises funds for priority park projects.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Greet and check-in students and instructors
    • Transport course participants in 14-passenger mini-buses
    • Assist students and instructors in the classroom as well as in the field
    • Oversee student safety and risk management in the field
    • Clean and maintain assigned vehicles and facilities daily
    • Represent Yellowstone Forever and its mission accurately and positively
    • Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with YF employees, volunteers and partners
    • Travel into Yellowstone, throughout the Greater Yellowstone area and other, as required
    • Other tasks as assigned by the Director of Fleet and Field Campuses, or other designated leadership

    Basic Qualifications: 

    • Willingness to live in close quarters, with a roommate at a remote facility in potentially extreme environmental conditions
    • Proven interpersonal and customer service skills for greeting and orienting students, instructors and visitors
    • Ability to maintain friendly, cooperative working relationships with a diverse population
    • Willingness to keep facility and vehicles clean, safe and maintained
    • Ability to perform basic cabin cleaning and maintenance tasks proficiently
    • Physically able to perform basic maintenance skills, lift up to 40 pounds, and to accompany courses into the field on hikes of 2-10 miles at elevation on uneven terrain
    • Demonstrated ability to anticipate student and facility needs and work with minimal supervision
    • Attention to safety and risk management
    • CPR certification (earned prior to starting work) and Wilderness First Aid certification (generally provided in training)
    • Ability to pass a DOT Medical Exam, only Program Volunteer positions
    • Willingness to support the needs of Yellowstone Forever through multiple assigned tasks in a volunteer capacity
    • Ability to represent YF in a courteous and professional manner
    • This position involves driving YF vehicles, therefore applicants must hold and maintain a valid US driver’s license, and maintain a favorable driving record for insurance purposes
    • A satisfactory criminal background check are conditions of volunteerism

    Preferred Qualifications: 

    • Experience with campus management
    • Experience with risk management
    • The ability to pass and maintain a Department of Transportation medical exam

    Benefits:

    This is a volunteer position located at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch, inside Yellowstone National Park and at the Yellowstone Overlook Field Campus, just outside the northern gate of Yellowstone National Park. Campus and Program Volunteers will be provided with a comfortable cabin that may be shared with other volunteers. Volunteers may be provided a nominal fee of $15 per day to help offset out of pocket expenses. This may be taxable income; therefore, volunteers will receive a 1099 from Yellowstone Forever. Volunteers must provide their own health insurance for any health issues unrelated to the volunteer duties. Yellowstone Forever volunteers also receive a 30% discount on most Park Stores products. Discounts on other courses and products are also offered.  Benefits of this position include knowing that your efforts directly benefit Yellowstone National Park and having the opportunity to work in one of the world’s premiere wilderness areas.

    The Fleet and Field Campus Coordinator plays a critical role in YF’s operations by working as an integral part of our Fleet and Facilities team assisting with the maintenance, appearance, and presentation of YF’s properties and vehicles.  This position is primarily responsible for the care and maintenance of the Yellowstone Overlook Field Campus and YF's fleet of vehicles but may also be needed to help with any other properties or logistics and risk management programs related to the fleet and facilities team. This position is also responsible for helping HR with the coordination of housing at properties owned or maintained by YF.  Success in this position requires rigorous attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, the ability to collaborate across the organization, as well as to effectively and creatively coordinate a diverse set of tasks to accomplish goals set by the organization.

    • Maintain and provide logistical support of the Yellowstone Overlook Field Campus.
    • Manage inventory of fleet and field campus supplies, while ensuring that all supplies meet YF’s sustainability standards, whenever possible.
    • Assist in vehicle maintenance and cleaning, and work with outside vendors.
    • Ensure all appropriate registrations, insurance and other documents, and equipment are up to date and maintained inside each vehicle.
    • Assist in vehicle shuttles to move vehicles between locations as needed, including any scheduled repairs or regular maintenance.
    • Act as a liaison to other departments to facilitate any troubleshooting needs or concerns raised by vehicle users.
    • Assist with of Electronic Data Logger management and DOT compliance fillable form organization.
    • Mitigate risk across the organization by maintaining first-aid kits for field campuses and vehicles.
    • Work with HR to ensure YF-owned employee housing facilities are healthy, safe, comfortable, and reflect YF's core values, standards of appearance and presentation and sustainability.
    • Assist and coordinate with HR with employee housing check-ins and move-out procedures.
    • Assist and coordinate check-ins and check-outs for artists- and scientists-in-residences when needed.
    • Coordinate with the Institute on the maintenance and management of program gear; including inventory records, repair needs, and sign-outs.
    • Provide support and work as a team with facilities staff and projects.
    • Facilitate and support driver and risk management trainings.
    • Act as an integral component of the operation’s management team as a forward thinking, proactive problem solver and planner.
    • Represent Yellowstone Forever and its mission accurately and positively.
    • Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with YF employees, volunteers, and partners.

    Basic Qualifications:

    • This position involves driving YF vehicles and passenger buses, therefore applicants must be 21 years of age, or older, hold and maintain a valid US driver’s license, and maintain a favorable driving record for insurance purposes.

    Preferred Qualifications: 

    • Current WFA and CPR certifications or higher, or the ability to acquire certifications.
    • Commitment to the sustainability initiative of YF and YNP.
    • 2 years’ experience in fleet management.

     

    Compensation:

    This is a full-time, non-exempt position, which will be based in Gardiner. Travel between the offices and throughout the park may be required. Salary is based upon experience; pay range $17.00 - $19.00 per hour.     Limited housing is available for this position. Housing is located in Gardiner, Montana. Housing is in shared units (individual bedrooms), no partners or pets are allowed in shared housing. Rent is paid via bi-weekly payroll deduction.

    • Embark merchandise in delivery trucks using appropriate tools;

  • Park Store Associate - Summer 2023

    The Park Store Associate is a critical role in the daily operation of Yellowstone Forever Park stores at visitor centers and contact stations throughout the Greater Yellowstone National Park Area. The associate represents “the face” of the organization by working on the front lines and often in partnership with naturalist rangers from the National Park Service. Associates assist and engage visitors with purchases of educational products, explain our supporter program and recruit new members, and help answer visitor questions about Yellowstone National Park. Success in this position requires outstanding visitor/customer service skills and a passion for Yellowstone National Park and its preservation, and sharing that passion with others.

    Housing: Options are available. Majority of housing available is RV sites, for these you bring your own RV. Limited other housing options are available to rent, single unit, two bedroom, and shared multi-bedroom units.

    The Retail Store Manager plays a critical role in overseeing day-to-day Yellowstone Forever Park Store operations in assigned stores at visitor centers and contact stations around the greater Yellowstone National Park area. The Retail Store Manager oversees staff assigned to specific stores as defined by the Retail Operations and Visual Merchandising Manager and is responsible for the daily execution of effective retail operations. To include training staff, inventory management, daily/weekly/monthly reporting, store cleanliness and presentation, tracking and relaying key performance indicators (KPIs), and overseeing related systems, working to provide the highest quality visitor experience possible. Closely coordinating with the Retail Operations and Visual Merchandising Manager, the Retail Store Manager is also responsible for executing the retail merchandising, marketing, and communication plans in their assigned Park Store and proactively looking for ways to enhance the visitor experience and developing recommendations to senior retail staff in the process. Additionally, the Retail Store Manager will assist in selecting, training, and developing Park Store Associates. Success in this position requires excellent supervisory skills and customer engagement, experience capturing and analyzing KPIs and managing core operational systems, unrelenting pursuit of excellence, and a drive for continual growth and improvement.

    Primary Responsibilities: 

    • Effectively manage the customer experience throughout the store by executing merchandising plans, making recommendations, and testing product stories through creative displays and merchandising and monitoring and reporting on these tests;
    • Actively greet and engage customers and be a Yellowstone Forever enthusiast related to our retail products, institute courses and offerings, the purpose of our philanthropy efforts, and the projects that we support annually
    • Provide training and mentoring to Park Store Associates and foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with a high level of accurate execution, and support Park Store Associates to ensure their ability to perform tasks as required;
    • Capture, analyze, and relay retail industry KPIs and lead staff to achieve the goals set for the assigned store, informed by captured KPIs;
    • Support the Retail Operations and Visual Merchandising Manager with budget planning and forecasting for the store and control and manage expenses as they directly relate to their assigned store operations, given established budget;
    • Work with the Yellowstone Forever facilities team to ensure displays, lighting, fixtures, and the store's physical appearance are maintained to the highest standards;
    • Work with the Retail Operations and Visual Merchandising Manager and merchants to set product layouts in stores and deliver on the product distribution and visual merchandising plans;
    • Develop a firm understanding and ability to navigate the retail back-end software systems to handle and track the accurate movement of inventory, stock levels, and inventory turns related to their store;
    • Be a POS systems expert related to the iPad register screens, software sales systems, and credit card processing equipment and how these systems interact and communicate with each other;
    • Work with organizational leadership and park partners to maximize store schedules, ensure appropriate staffing levels, and maintain staffing schedules;
    • Process all transactions using the POS and other systems, and become a problem solver as it relates to these systems to keep transactions flowing efficiently through the store;
    • Have a passion for creating and delivering a superior customer experience;
    • Ensure that the store is held to the highest cleanliness and presentation standards;
    • Work collaboratively within the Yellowstone Forever organization to ensure that Yellowstone Forever's procedures and standards carry out operations within the store;

    Basic Qualifications:  

    • 1-2 years of retail store experience, including use and performance related to retail industry KPIs;
    • 1-2 years of supervisory experience;
    • Experience in high volume (rush period) retail environment;
    • Team player with excellent oral and written communication skills;
    • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment;
    • Proven ability to quickly learn and apply new systems, processes, and applications;

Ensure that there is a continual effort to provide the highest quality visitor experience possible. Closely coordinate with the Retail Park Store Manager in executing the retail merchandising, marketing, and communication plans in assigned Park Stores and proactively looking for ways to enhance the visitor experience. Success in this position requires an exceptional attitude and desire for proactive customer engagement, an unrelenting pursuit of excellence, and a drive for continual growth and improvement.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Actively greet and engage customers and be a Yellowstone Forever ambassador as it relates to our retail products, institute courses and offerings, and the purpose of our philanthropy efforts and the projects that we support annually
    • Lead by example with the highest level of customer engagement by being a knowledge expert about Yellowstone National Park and the offerings from Yellowstone Forever
    • Ensure that all assigned stores are held to the highest degree of customer engagement and positive representation of Yellowstone Forever
    • Provide training and mentoring to Park Store Associates and foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with a high level of accurate execution, and support full-time and seasonal Park Store Associates to ensure their ability to perform tasks as required
    • Work with the Yellowstone Forever facilities team to ensure displays, lighting, fixtures and the physical appearance of the store are maintained to the highest standards
    • Be a POS systems expert as it relates to the iPad register screens, software sales systems, and credit card processing equipment and how these systems interact and communicate with each other
    • Have a passion for creating and delivering a superior customer experience
    • Work collaboratively within the Yellowstone Forever organization to ensure that operations within the store are carried out in accordance with Yellowstone Forever’s procedures and standards
    • Effectively communicate relevant program, product, and park changes to all staff and associates within the store team
    • Ensure the active promotion of the Yellowstone Forever Supporter and Institute programs
    • Represent Yellowstone Forever and its mission accurately and positively
    • Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with Yellowstone Forever employees, volunteers and partners

    Basic Qualifications: 

    • 2-3 years of active diverse customer engagement within a retail or service environment
    • 1-2 years of product, service, or other in person presentations
    • Experience in customer interaction with educational products or course offerings
    • Team player with excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
    • Proven ability to quickly learn and apply new systems, processes, and applications
    • Experience providing excellent customer service.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Enter data in inventory and logistics software programs
    • Receive shipments and track them by utilizing the warehouse management system. To include receipt of the purchase order, posting the item receipt and bin put away
    • Embark merchandise in delivery trucks using appropriate tools
    • Accommodate and carefully handle fragile merchandise
    • Use the warehouse management system to tag and label merchandise with its appropriate barcodes
    • Utilize the warehouse management system to complete online sales order to include picking the order, packaging it appropriately, and shipping it using prescribed mailing procedures
    • Box, wrap, and pack the merchandise following relevant procedures and standards
    • Prepare all transfer orders utilizing the warehouse management system to include picking, packing the merchandise, and preparing the packing slip for the store
    • Record in the warehouse management system all impaired or damaged merchandise items
    • Operate adequate merchandise management tools (for example, walkie stacker)
    • Conduct daily cycle counts on the warehouse management system
    • Welcome delivery trucks and assist with placing the product on the dock in an organized manner
    • Effectively communicate warehouse-related information across the organization, National Park Service, and all Park partners
    • Represent YF and its mission accurately and positively
    • Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with YF employees, volunteers, and partners
    • Other tasks as assigned by Warehouse Manager, or other designated leadership
