In addition, we have approximately 75 seasonal employees working in Summer (May through October) and approximately 20 in Winter (December through March).

Nearly 100 people volunteer for Yellowstone Forever in a given year.  

The Park is in transition between seasons (April and November), with the roads and operations generally closed to the public.

    Summary Description:

    Yellowstone Forever is the official nonprofit partner of Yellowstone National Park. We partner with Yellowstone National Park to create opportunities for all people to experience, enhance, and preserve Yellowstone forever. Our combined operations include 11 educational Park Stores with gross sales of over $5.1 million; the Yellowstone Forever Institute, which offers more than 600 in-depth programs each year; a supporter program of over 50,000 Yellowstone enthusiasts raising funds to support critical park priority projects; and an online community of over 300,000 worldwide. Yellowstone Forever has provided over $100 million of cash support and over $55 million of in-kind support since 1933. Our mission of engagement and support through education and fundraising for the park will ensure Yellowstone remains for generations to come. 


    The Senior Director/VP of Human Resources plays a critical role in fostering Yellowstone Forever’s workplace culture and the recruitment, hiring, and engagement of employees and volunteers. This position leads a Human Resources (HR) team which proactively develops and manages initiatives, programs, and policies to measure and enhance staff performance, consistent with best practices. The Director/VP of Human Resources closely partners with the President & CEO and senior staff to develop and implement programs, policies, trainings, and services to help enhance the staff experience, in order to attract, develop, engage, and retain the uniquely talented people required to achieve the mission of Yellowstone Forever. This position is lead for overseeing recruiting, payroll/benefits administration, staff performance management, staff engagement, workplace culture initiatives, staff relations, and legal/regulatory compliance around employment. Further, this position will lead recruitment and management of our volunteers, and related support. This position is a member of the senior leadership team of Yellowstone Forever, and provides guidance on related matters to the President and CEO and other senior leaders.  The ability to direct multiple priorities with minimal supervision is essential. Success in this position requires outstanding organizational skills, initiative, deep knowledge of employment and volunteer practices, interpersonal relationship building, and proven leadership skills. The position also will require visibility in the workplace to build rapport with staff at all levels of the organization.

     

    Primary Responsibilities:
     

    • Maintain an expert understanding in Yellowstone Forever’s desired workplace culture, and work closely with the President & CEO and senior staff to create long-term strategies and drive key initiatives to promote and achieve a culture of excellence and employee engagement.
    • Monitor staff and volunteer feedback, relevant data, and metrics to share with leadership and identify areas for improvement.
    • Drive high levels of workforce performance and enrich staff engagement by developing, implementing and overseeing employee and volunteer programs including recruitment, hiring, orientation/onboarding, organizational development and regular performance management.
    • Provide strategic and operational leadership in the design, development, implementation, administration, and communication of YF’s total rewards programs, including payroll/benefits management, in addition to management of employee and volunteer housing needs.
    • Partner with leadership to ensure appropriate staffing levels are achieved while managing the compensation program with consideration to internal and external equity.
    • Develop and manage annual budgets and timelines.
    • Work with leadership and hiring managers to recruit and select talented employees and volunteers.
    • Coach supervisors on the handling of performance and disciplinary issues, including developing templates, trainings, and guidelines for performance documentation.
    • Maximize efficiency and effectiveness of programs that effect volunteers and employees.
    • Develop and maintain updated orientation and development programs, including developing regular trainings, which enhance employee performance and volunteer services.
    • Develop and motivate HR team to achieve optimal performance.
    • Effectively and timely communicate relevant HR related information across the organization.
    • Oversee tracking and fulfilling federal and state filing requirements related to employment, coordinating as needed with legal/finance.
    • Lead initiatives to periodically review and update the Employee and Volunteer handbooks, tracking and incorporating applicable developments in employment law and industry best practices.
    • Work closely with finance on retirement plan administration, including coordinating delivery of required communications to plan participants and lead the annual plan audit.
    • Lead review of employee concerns and complaints, coordinating as needed with legal, to address and mitigate potential risks.
    • Represent Yellowstone Forever and its mission accurately and positively
    • Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with YF employees, volunteers and partners
    • Travel into Yellowstone, throughout the Greater Yellowstone area and other, as required
    • Other tasks as assigned by the President & CEO or other designated leadership
       

    Basic Qualifications: 

    • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and SPHR, SHRM-SCP, or other relevant certification
    • Eight or more years of Human Resources Management experience in a nonprofit setting with both employees and volunteers
    • Significant knowledge of laws, regulations, compliance standards, and best practices related to employment and volunteer management
    • Experience with payroll and benefits administration, including ERISA retirement plan administration and annual audits. 
    • Experience with managing employee relations matters, including internal investigations
    • Experience with coaching leadership
    • Team player with excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Excellent supervisory competence
    • Ability to direct multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, with initiative
    • Proven ability to quickly learn and apply new systems, processes, and applications
    • Demonstrated capability in process improvement
    • Self-motivated with a sound approach to problem solving and timely task completion

    The Research Librarian plays a critical role in the providing reference services at the Heritage Research Center. This position is responsible for cataloging, digitizing, book conservation, and program outreach. The ability to communicate with researchers at all levels is essential. Success in this position requires high-degrees of attention to detail, multitasking, and professionalism, all in a fun and fast paced environment.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    ·        Complete original cataloging, using RDA, of a wide range of materials, such as books, journal articles, dissertations, 16mm films, VHS tapes, DVDs, and ephemera.

    ·        Provide reference services to broad array of researchers (students, scientists, teachers, genealogists, film producers, park staff) on all topics related to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

    ·        Perform light conservation treatment (i.e. book repair) and preventive maintenance (i.e. custom storage enclosures) on library holdings.

    ·        Digitize non-copyrighted material and make accessible on-line through sites such as the Montana Memory Project.

    ·        Assist with program outreach by conducting tours of the library to various groups, giving presentations, planning exhibits, and managing the summer Bookmobile.

    ·        Represent Yellowstone Forever and its mission accurately and positively

    ·        Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with YF employees, volunteers, and partners

    ·        Travel into Yellowstone, throughout the Greater Yellowstone area and other, as required 

    ·        Other tasks as assigned by Supervisory Museum Curator, or other designated leadership

    Basic Qualifications: 

    ·        2+ years of graduate education or master’s in library science or equivalent graduate degree

    ·        3+ years of experience as a research librarian

    ·        Experience working with library software such as WorkFlows, Blue Cloud, Libris

    ·        Ability to communicate with and successfully assist a variety of researchers on a wide range of topics

    ·        Ability to work as a team player with excellent oral and written communication skills

    ·        Ability to be flexible in dealing with shifting priorities

    ·        Ability to lift boxes/equipment weighing up to 40 pounds (with support of lift equipment)

    ·        Ability to represent YF in a courteous and professional manner

    Compensation:

    This is a full-time, year-round, exempt position based in Gardiner, Montana.  Salary is based upon experience, with a range of $32,000 - $46,000.  This position qualifies for Yellowstone Forever’s generous benefit package, which includes paid time off, 14 paid holidays, retirement program, medical, dental, vision, short-term-disability, life and AD&D insurance, and other ancillary insurance plans. Yellowstone Forever employees also receive a 30% discount on most Park Stores products and a free Yellowstone Forever Institute Field Seminar each year.  Discounts on other courses and products are also offered.  Benefits of this position include knowing that your efforts directly benefit Yellowstone National Park and having the opportunity to work in one of the world’s premiere wilderness areas.

    Park Store Associates are responsible for the day to day aspect of running the Airport Store in the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport and report directly to the Park Store Associate Lead and Retail Operations North Territory Manager.  Park Store Associates assist visitors with purchases of educational products, recruit Yellowstone Forever supporters, and help answer visitor questions about Yellowstone National Park. Success in this position requires outstanding visitor/customer service skills and a passion for the wonderland that is Yellowstone. In addition, the Park Store Associate assists with the stocking of the Airport Brochure Desk, and works with the Airport Office staff to ensure the Airport Store has the most up to date information on the vendor layout of the Brochure Desk.

    • Actively greet visitors and be familiar with all merchandise in order to assist customers in making purchases
    • Actively promote Yellowstone Forever’s supporter program  and encourage visitors to participate by offering the opportunity to join to as many customers as possible
    • Ring up sales using a Point of Sale (POS) computer system
    • Complete daily cash reports
    • Respond to questions about the park by providing accurate information or, when necessary, referring the visitor to another source
    • Stock and clean the sales area as needed
    • Work collaboratively with staff across the organization and cooperating partners
    • Represent Yellowstone Forever and its mission accurately and positively

The associate represents “the face” of the organization by working on the front lines and often in partnership with naturalist rangers from the National Park Service. Associates assist and engage visitors with purchases of educational products, explain our supporter program and recruit new members, and help answer visitor questions about Yellowstone National Park. Success in this position requires outstanding visitor/customer service skills and a passion for Yellowstone National Park and its preservation, and sharing that passion with others.

Field seminars are based at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch field campus, the Yellowstone Forever classrooms in Gardiner, or another location in the park. The Yellowstone Overlook field campus is based in Gardiner, and provides a location for adult students and youth groups to stay in comfortable lodging during their stay while participating in YF programs. Campus and Program Volunteers welcome and host students, orient them to Yellowstone Forever and the facility, assist instructors in logistical aspects of courses, drive the 14-passenger mini-bus for all field trips, assist in risk management in the field, and maintain and clean campus facilities. Campus and Program Volunteers also provide linen service and basic maintenance services at the Yellowstone Overlook field campus. Success in this position requires a welcoming demeanor, being a responsible and independent worker and being able to assist with the needs of various students. Depending upon the needs of Yellowstone Forever, Campus and Program Volunteers may spend more time or less on certain duties.

    Bob and Connie Landis have carried on that legacy of artistic and scientific excellence in the Yellowstone region through the creation of award winning art and teaching that art to future generations. The Landis Artist and Scientist Residency Program will provide artists and scientists an unparalleled opportunity to live and work in Yellowstone country.

    The Yellowstone Forever Resident Artists are active artist who produce original art inspired by Yellowstone National Park. Artists of all disciplines and experience levels are welcome to apply for the Landis Artist-in-Residence program, from painters to ceramists to musicians and poets. Cross-disciplinary artists are encouraged to apply, particularly those who integrate science into their process.

    The focus of the art must fall within at least one area of Yellowstone National Park’s Primary Interpretive Themes (Geology, Geothermal Features, Natural Resource Preservation, Wildlife, Ecosystem, Human Culture and History, First National Park, Wildness, Climate Change & Sustainability, Management). 

    Through the Landis Artist-in-Residency Program, Yellowstone Forever will provide a living space for visiting artist who are actively creating work focused on Yellowstone National Park.

    The art residency runs year-round for periods from 2 weeks to 6 months. A committee of working artists and Yellowstone Forever staff will review and make the final decisions.

    Artist-in-Residence will:

    • Produce original art inspired by Yellowstone National Park
    • If scheduling allows, provide one public engagement event during each approximately two-week stay: This may be a workshop, demonstration, art program to the local school, reading, or lecture. Please feel free to propose ideas to the Yellowstone Forever Institute staff.
    • Provide a non-exclusive perpetual license to use digital images of art produced during the residency for the purpose of promoting this residency program and Yellowstone National Park.

    Eligibility: 

    • Must be an active working artist with art inspired by nature, public lands, or people’s relationship to nature
    • The focus of the art created during the residency must fall within at least one area of Yellowstone National Park’s Primary Interpretive Themes (outlined above)
    • Must be at least 21 years of age

    Benefits:

    This is a volunteer position located in Gardiner, Montana at the Bob & Connie Landis Residency, just outside the northern gate of Yellowstone National Park. Residents will be provided with housing in a fully-furnished home overlooking the Yellowstone River for a modest lease rate of $75/week. Volunteers must provide their own health insurance for any health issues unrelated to the volunteer duties. Yellowstone Forever volunteers also receive a 30% discount on most Park Stores products. Discounts on other courses and products are also offered. Benefits of this position also include knowing that your efforts directly benefit Yellowstone National Park and having the opportunity to work in one of the world’s premiere wilderness areas.

    The Yellowstone Forever Resident Scientists are research scientists who are conducting research in Yellowstone either independently (with appropriate YNP research permits) or in conjunction with Yellowstone National Park researchers. Research topics must fall within at least one area of Yellowstone National Park’s Primary Interpretive Themes (Geology, Geothermal Features, Natural Resource Preservation, Wildlife, Ecosystem, Human Culture and History, First National Park, Wildness, Climate Change & Sustainability, Management). 

    Through the Landis Scientist Residency Program, Yellowstone Forever will provide a living space for visiting scientists who are actively working on scientific projects focused on Yellowstone National Park. This can include scientists working on independent research projects that are permitted through the Yellowstone Center for Resources or scientists who are participating in research projects being led by Yellowstone National Park staff or Yellowstone Forever staff including the Citizen Science program.

    The science residency program runs year round. Scientist are selected for periods ranging from two weeks to six months. A committee of will review all applications and make the final decisions.

    Scientist-in-Residency will:

    • Conduct scientific research in Yellowstone National Park
    • If scheduling allows, provide at least one public engagement event, such as a lecture, presentation, or field trip as  (if scheduling allows) during the residency period.

    Eligibility: 

    • Must be a Principle Investigator or affiliated with a Principle Investigator conducting approved research either in Yellowstone National Park or at the Heritage and Research Center
    • Research topics must fall within at least one area of Yellowstone National Park’s Primary Interpretive Themes (outlined above)

    The Equipment and Vehicle Volunteer provides logistical support for programs that originate out of Yellowstone Forever’s Gardiner, MT office. The Equipment and Vehicle Volunteer will work with the Fleet and Logistics Manager to ensure equipment needed for programs is maintained and cleaned. The Equipment and Vehicle Volunteer also provides support to field instructors by staging needed equipment for programs, and putting equipment away when it returns from a program. Success in this position requires attention to detail, flexibility and a willingness to work a split shift. This is a seasonal volunteer position from May through September.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Maintain equipment that is used for programs based in Gardiner, and equipment that is sent in from other locations
    • Inventory equipment used in programs originating from Gardiner
    • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and organization of equipment storage area
    • Collaborate with the Fleet and Logistics Manager to ensure the cleanliness and preparedness of YF’s vehicle fleet and program equipment, providing logistical support to Yellowstone Forever Institute
      • Wash and clean interior and exterior of YF vehicles
      • Drive 14 passenger mini bus on scheduled shuttle runs to Bozeman Airport and throughout Yellowstone National Park
      • Travel to Bozeman, and other locations, to acquire needed supplies
      • Apply Yellowstone Forever Institute policies and safety procedures

    • Ability to work independently in a busy work environment

    Benefits:

    This is a volunteer position located at the North Entrance Education Center, just outside the northern gate of Yellowstone National Park. Volunteers in Gardiner will be provided with shared housing that may include roommates. These units include comfortable furniture, pots, pans, and dishes.  Volunteers will be provided a nominal fee of $15 per day to help offset out of pocket expenses. This may be taxable income; therefore, volunteers will receive a 1099 from Yellowstone Forever. Volunteers must provide their own health insurance for any health issues unrelated to the volunteer duties.     Seasonal Naturalists are part of a progressive and dedicated Institute team responsible for the delivery of in-depth world-class educational programs in Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding ecosystem.

     

    As a naturalist, they must be knowledgeable about many aspects of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem including the natural history, ecology, geology, and cultural history of the region; the identification, biology, behavior, and habitat of the wildlife; and ongoing resource management issues and preservation efforts in the ecosystem.

     

    As an educator, they teach a wide array of programs for children and adults, ranging in length from one hour to over a week, and incorporating many disciplines including both art and science. Program types include youth and college, private tours, teacher workshops, adult programs, and philanthropic programs.

     

    They are experienced outdoor leaders who create a comfortable learning environment while keeping their participants safe in inclement weather, wildlife habitat, and while driving them in Institute vehicles.

     

     

    Primary Responsibilities

    Instruction and Engagement

    • Teach a wide variety of exceptional, field-based, educational programs, reflecting YF’s educational philosophy, to various ages, demographics, fitness levels, and learning styles with the goal of connecting visitors to Yellowstone and building a constituency for preservation
    • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of Yellowstone National Park and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem including the natural, cultural, and geologic history, wildlife and management issues, and conservation challenges
    • Articulate the Yellowstone Forever mission and represent the organization accurately and positively; encourage participation in the organization through philanthropic support, volunteerism, and Institute programs
    • Promote Yellowstone Forever philanthropy-supported park projects and retail operations within educational programs
    • Emphasize the protection of park resources, Leave No Trace practices, and adherence to YF’s Code of Ethics and regulations

     

    Risk Management and Safety

    • Operate vehicles, including 14-passenger minibuses and other vehicles, safely and defensively and follow appropriate vehicle safety checklists
    • Anticipate and manage potential hazards or group issues that might arise due to wildlife, terrain, weather, or student attitude/ability
    • Prepare students for the field through pre-course and daily orientations
    • Exercise sound judgment and manage groups effectively under changing, stressful, or emergency conditions
    • Follow YF emergency procedures and facilitate emergency response

     

     

    Professionalism

    • Understand and follow YF policies and procedures and National Park Service regulations
    • Take initiative in communications with organizational management

    Basic Qualifications

    • Professional experience in teaching, environmental education, or interpretation
    • A four-year college degree in a related field from an accredited institution or equivalent experience

    • Strong commitment to the educational mission of the Yellowstone Forever Institute
    • Current CPR and Wilderness First Aid certifications, or willingness to attain and maintain these certifications
    • This position involves driving YF vehicles, therefore applicants must be 21 years of age or older, maintain a valid US driver’s license for a minimum of two years, and maintain a favorable driving record for insurance purposes
    • The ability to pass and maintain a Department of Transportation medical exam and YF driver training

    • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, hike up to twelve miles on uneven terrain, cross-country ski, snowshoe, and work outdoors in all weather conditions common to the region while carrying a pack weighing up to 40 pounds
