The Historic Winnedumah Hotel is now accepting applications from seasonal workers for the 2020 summer season (March 1st to early November). We are located in the heart of the Owens Valley in the Eastern Sierra Nevada,15 miles north of Lone Pine, 42 miles south of Bishop, only 27 miles from the Mt. Whitney Portal and 7 miles from the trailhead to Kearsarge Pass in the Onion Valley. Built in the 1920’s to house the cast of Hollywood westerns filmed in the nearby Alabama Hills, the Winnedumah Hotel offers a unique history and hospitality experience. If you enjoy the outdoors, you will love the Eastern Sierra Nevada, where the wildlife, fishing, hiking and scenery are spectacular!

The Winnedumah Hotel offers an outstanding opportunity to work in a bustling, close knit hospitality environment. We are a full-service destination and transient hotel comprised of 21 rooms with breakfast prepared and served on premises for guests, as well as, grab and go items. No hospitality experience is necessary; just an adventurer’s spirit and a desire to serve an array of guests from all over the world. You will be trained and work in multiple areas of the hotel with an emphasis on heart of house operations, such as; housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance. As part of your experience, you will acquire a full array of hospitality skills.

Compensation is $12.00 an hour, plus housing and breakfast. Housing is dorm style with access to kitchenette and laundry facilities. Additional benefits include working in one of the most beautiful areas in the country, free laundry and Wi-Fi.

Candidates must have their own reliable transportation. We are a completely smoke free premises (including vaping). The Winnedumah is a historical hotel undergoing restoration. Being physically fit is essential. We have no age restrictions (except being at least 18 years old) and encourage retirees and seniors to apply as well.

The Winnedumah Hotel has an opportunity for an experienced line cook who would like to grow in their role and truly be a part of a collaborative effort to bring the food and beverage department of our historic hotel to life. We are under new ownership and management, and we have a vision for this iconic hotel that centers on our F&B offerings.

Initially you will be doing very limited shifts from 5 to 7 days a week preparing our Brown Bag Continental Breakfast (to-go bags). As we move further into high season, you will be a one stop shop for preparing an extended continental breakfast to our in-house guests, including; preparation, presentation, interaction with guests and cleanup. The role, as we build out our kitchen, has the potential to evolve and expand as our offerings do. The shifts will expand, and you will need to be flexible and adaptable.

Our ideal candidate will have some line cook/prep cook experience with a desire to expand their culinary talents, a desire to cook from scratch and source locally. Some baking experience would also be of benefit. If the words, vintage, hyper local, and retro, resonate with you, then you will be very comfortable with our goals.

Initially you will be a one stop shop and will work closely with Ownership and the General Managers on assisting in procurement, inventory control, adhering to budgets, costing, preparation of all consumables, set-up, take down and all dishwashing and kitchen cleaning duties. Adaptability and flexibility are key attributes that we seek.

We are very collaborative and believe that what we do should be fun, creative, and provide the highest level of service. You need to be a creative, adaptable, high energy professional who can work in a kitchen that is undergoing renovations and doesn’t mind a “make do” environment.

If you do not have ServSafe certification, you will need to obtain it.

Due to our remote location you will need a reliable vehicle, as the public transportation has limited route options.

As part of your compensation package, we provide onsite, shared housing, free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and access to our laundry room when we are not using it for guests, as well as basic linens.


SEASONAL INTERN

The Winnedumah Hotel is nestled in the Owens Valley, within the Eastern Sierras mountain range. Situated 3 hours north of Los Angeles, 3 south of Reno-Tahoe, 3.5 hours northwest of Las Vegas, and 5 hours southeast of San Francisco. The hotel is near Mammoth Lake ski mountain, and in between Yosemite and Death Valley National Park.

The opportunity

We are seeking interns who aren’t afraid of hard work, while learning about hospitality and helping in the restoration of a historic hotel. The Winnedumah Hotel, in Independence, California, was built in 1927. Under new ownership and management, we are focused on bringing this hotel back to its former beauty during its heyday when old western film stars stayed here while filming classic western films in the nearby Alabama Hills.

The work will vary, and no two days will be the same. Emphasis will be placed on housekeeping, front desk, guest services, maintenance and limited assistance in food and beverage.

Our expectation is that interns can lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Standing, stooping, bending, manual dexterity, and ability to stand long hours is required.

A heart of hospitality will go a long way in enhancing your internship process. You will be working under the guidance of experienced and award-winning hospitality professionals and have the opportunity to understand the workings of a boutique hotel from the ground up.

Workdays will typically be no more than 3 to 4 hours in length with the rest of the time available to go and explore and enjoy your environment. Shifts will vary depending upon the assignments given on any given day and occupancy at the hotel.

Two days a week will be given for free time. When possible, the days will be back to back but may be split days.


Please note internships will last a minimum of 6 weeks and we will consider renewing the internship. Interns will be considered as first candidates for paid roles during our high season.

Preference will be given to those interns seeking to broaden their experience within the rooms and housekeeping divisions, food and beverage and front desk. Retirees will also be considered on a case by case basis.

 

Room, breakfast and small stipend

We provide a shared bedroom with a communal bath. Valuable and excessive possessions should not be brought with you as there is limited storage space. Interns will have access to a refrigerator, microwave and the hotel’s kitchen. Cookware and dishes are not provided. Only breakfast will be provided. The closest small grocery store is 15 miles south in Lone Pine and the larger grocer is 40 miles north in Bishop. It is essential that team members respect that they are staying in a historic hotel and that our guests come first.

We do not have televisions on property, but there is free wireless internet. Cell phone service is good depending upon your provider. We are strictly a smoke free facility (including no vaping). Overnight visitors are not permitted due to limited room space.

A small stipend is part of the internship, but the experience gained for your resume in hospitality and the opportunity to have time to explore the Eastern Sierra Nevada region is why you will want to be chosen for this opportunity.

GETTING HERE AND GETTING AROUND

If selected, the intern(s) is responsible for transportation to the Winnedumah Hotel in Independence, California. Individuals driving their own vehicles will experience a great deal more mobility during their time with us and will have an opportunity to explore the Eastern Sierra Nevada region in a more fulfilling manner; however, there is a public bus with limited route options. We strongly encourage applicants to have a form of transportation given the distance between various locations.

FOR FUN

Independence, California sits at the very base of the Eastern Sierra Nevada Range between Lone Pine and Bishop. Mammoth Lakes is not very far away either. There is a wealth of outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, camping, fishing, exploring and so much more. Sitting at an elevation of about 3,900 feet, we experience a high desert environment with hot days during the summer months but cooling off in the evenings and temperate fall days. During the slower winter season, skiing is a short drive away and the hotel makes a perfect base camp for skiing during your days off and giving you a break from the snow when you are scheduled to work. There is an amazing opportunity to grow your network by meeting other folks from nearby areas that are also on seasonal internships and work.


CULINARY INTERN

The historic Winnedumah Hotel located in the heart of Owens Valley in the Eastern Sierra Nevada is offering an opportunity for a culinary intern.

If words like, vintage, retro, hyper local, from scratch, creative, collaborative, extreme adaptability and flexibility ignite your imagination then we may be a good fit for you.

Our internship will begin March 1st and can go until mid-October, a shorter duration may be available.

This position is responsible for all aspects of food preparation up to and including final presentation for delivery to guests. Responsibilities will include food preparation tasks as assigned by the General Manager or their designee. The hotel offers an extended continental breakfast and the intern will be charged with preparing, presenting, guest interaction and take down and cleanup, often as a one stop shop. An opportunity exists to be a part of the restoration and preliminary groundwork of creating a new restaurant as part of this internship.

Hours will be limited and rarely exceed 3 to 4 hours in any given day and at least two days a week will be given as free time so the intern may enjoy the beauty of the Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra Nevada.

An emphasis on fresh baked goods and in-house made breakfast foods will be a part of the training and internship.

The intern will be responsible for the kitchen, storage and dining room, including; maintaining a clean and organized work environment at the start, during and at the end of shift, in addition to assisting with receiving deliveries to the kitchen. The candidate must be self-motivated, able to take direction, follow recipes and work in a semi-supervised environment.

The intern is required to have completed at least one year of culinary school and or be enrolled in a culinary program.

This internship provides for housing in shared accommodation with other staff members within the hotel. Breakfast is included, as well as a stipend and free Wi-Fi and use of hotel laundry facilities.

The hotel is in a remote location, so it is extremely important that the intern have reliable private transportation.
