On the Road – November 5, 2017

And just like that, it’s November, and winter is nearly upon us. Ski resorts are in full hiring mode right now, so if you’re thinking about a job in a winter wonderland, now is a great time to apply. And if snow and cold isn’t your thing, you’ll find some warmer weather employers on the winter jobs’ page as well.

October was a busy month for us here at CoolWorks. Kelcy and Matt traveled to Alaska at the beginning of the month to visit some Alaska employers and see their properties as well as to attend the Alaska Travel Industry Association’s annual convention, which hundreds of Alaska employers attend.

Later in the month, we hosted the 29th annual Seasonal Human Resource Association Conference. CoolWorks Patty has been the conference coordinator for many years, and she was joined by Kelcy, Matt and I on the Isle of Palms, South Carolina to run the three-day conference extravaganza. We had about 35 attendees this year, the folks that do the hiring, onboarding and general taking care of summer and winter seasonal staff. They came from all over the country and included National Park concessionaires and their non-profit partnersoutdoor adventure companies, guest ranches, an Alaska company that hires and places chefs, conference centers, transportation companies, and ski resorts. All told, employers who need to hire thousands of seasonal employees. Their attendance, in part, gives them the opportunity to reflect on and improve the experience they provide for seasonal employees.

This is a glimpse into what we do “behind the CoolWorks curtain” to make sure we have plenty of great job opportunities on the site for you!

After the conference concluded, our other team members – Eric and Ke’ren – joined us for a four-day CoolWorks retreat. Many of you may not know that we’re a virtual team and live spread out across the country. Although we video conference a few times a week, and we message back and forth with each other throughout the day on Slack, there’s just no replacement for getting together in person. So not unlike seasonal living, once a year we pick a place, rent a house, share meals, and really enjoy each other’s company. This year included a pretty awesome kayak tour, a campfire singalong (thanks to Matt and his guitar), lots of hot tub soaks, plenty of walks on the beach, and a couple nights out in Charleston. All that and we even managed to work some! We may not work seasonally anymore, but we still value and live the lifestyle that seasonal work afforded us.

We’re back in our respective locations again and missing each other – just like you may be missing your summer season buds – but we’re also energized!

Here at CoolWorks, our mission is to connect adventurous job seekers with the amazing employers we serve across the country, and this past week gave us the opportunity to interact with both – the employers at SHRA and plenty of seasonal workers on the South Carolina coast. We also had great team face time to brainstorm some cool new features to add to the site. So stay tuned y’all, more goodness to come!
