There have and always will be times when we feel united and when we feel separated as human beings. We will all know times of peace, and times of division, when we only seem capable of seeing each others’ skin, politics, faith, and any other attributes that differ from our own. When we find ourselves in the turbulence of disunity, we can find comfort and guidance in the words of those who have encountered and fought disparities.
And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream.
It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
We will always succeed at finding reasons to be divided, identifying and clinging to the limited factors that make us different from each other. We’re all guilty of it. Something inherent in our nature causes us to retreat to the security of what we understand when we encounter fear and uncertainty.
Embracing equality and casting aside our differences demands true courage, and it tests our deepest insecurities. But the reward is complete freedom from fear and doubt; the reward is harmony with all human beings; the reward is gaining a planet of sisters and brothers.
Today, and all days to come, let’s each of us find the courage to accept and embrace our neighbors. Let’s live up to the expectations and sacrifices of those who came before us who dared to celebrate our differences. Let’s aspire to continue creating a world where all of us treat each other and ourselves with kindness, compassion, and equality.
