Outdoor Program Leader

Touch of Nature Environmental Center, Southern Illinois University Carbondale – 3,100 acres of beautiful Southern Illinois landscape amongst lakes and sandstone bluffs

Description:

The Outdoor Program Leader (OPL) will act as a program leader in the facilitation of outdoor adventure activities and experiential education under the direct supervision of a Program Coordinator. The OPL will be responsible for assisting in the leadership, instruction and supervision of participants in specialized outdoor activities.  The OPL will also assist in program planning, promotion, and evaluation of outdoor educational/recreational activities.  A key component of the OPL's duties will be to provide for the physical needs and safety of participants.  A final component will be the maintenance, care, and knowledge of program equipment, gear, and facilities.

This position is security-sensitive. Before any offer of employment can be made, the University will conduct a pre-employment background investigation, which includes a criminal background check.

Organizational Relationships:

This position reports to the Program Coordinator, who in turn reports to the Director of Touch of Nature Environmental Center, who in turn reports to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Qualifications:

  • Outgoing, hardworking, customer service oriented attitude
  • Enthusiastic and capable of working with people of various ages and abilities while maintaining a positive, professional demeanor
  • A desire to understand the theories, philosophies, and techniques relevant to wilderness environmental adventure programming
  • Applicants must have a Wilderness First Aid background (be able to make a case for your experience if lacking a certification), Wilderness First Responder preferred
  • Experience and training in one or more of the following fields is desirable:
    • Outdoor Leadership
    • Education
    • Sustainability
    • Recreation
    • Human Services
    • Forestry
  • Required to have prior experience with one or more outdoor skills such as: rock climbing, high/low ropes course facilitation, team building, canoeing, rappelling, interpretive nature
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates Outdoor Adventure Programming in specialized outdoor activities such as: rock climbing, high/low ropes course facilitation, team building, canoeing, kayaking, rappelling, interpretive nature hikes, residential youth camps, and other adventure environmental based activities
  • Assists in planning outdoor educational/recreational activity programs
  • Directly implements instruction and supervision for all participants to ensure safety protocols
  • Directly responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of program equipment, gear and facilities used in programming
  • Assist in logistical needs
  • Develop program evaluation
  • Other duties assigned

Knowledge Required for the Job:

  • Facilitates Outdoor Adventure Programming in specialized outdoor activities such as: rock climbing, high/low ropes course facilitation, team building, canoeing, rappelling, interpretive nature hikes, residential youth camps, and other adventure/education based activities
  • Assists in planning outdoor educational/recreational activity programs

Responsibility:

  • Supervisory Controls - this position will require at least weekly meetings with the Program Coordinator or Assistant Program Coordinator to review work, determine priorities, receive assignments, and set deadlines
  • Guidelines - this position must follow the policies and standard operating procedures of Touch of Nature Environmental Center, Southern Illinois University, and the State Universities Civil Service System 

Difficulty:

  • Complexity - due to the complex nature of the diverse programs, activities, curricula, populations, and environments, the employee must use a variety of approaches and techniques to effectively fulfill the duties and responsibilities of this position
  • Scope and Effect - the purpose of the assignment is to implement program activities that will provide a satisfying and valuable educational and recreational experience in an outdoor setting. The decisions of the employee directly affect the participants, sponsors, other staff members and the program

Personal Relationships:

The primary contact will be face-to-face with individuals and groups who are participating in program activities.  Occasionally, this employee will present the program to sponsoring agencies and community groups. The purpose of these forms of contact is to instruct/supervise participants and to provide information to community groups.

Working Conditions:

Physical Requirements - the employee must be able to endure physical exertions related to such activities as hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, and camping.  There are often potentially discomforting or hazardous situations such as insect bites, poison ivy, inclement weather, and others associated with year-round, outdoor activities.  Work hours are often long, and work schedules are often irregular.

Work Environment - the employee works outdoors, and only occasionally in an office setting.

Rank: Extra-Help staff; Residency may be required.

Salary Range:  Dependent on previous experience and certifications.
