Sweet Grass Ranch is a family-owned and operated cattle ranch and guest ranch in the spectacular Crazy Mountains of Montana. The ranch dates back to the late 1800s and we've been taking guests at this location since 1965.
We are looking for one wrangler to add to our summer crew for our 2019 guest season. Applicants needs to be available from July 1 to September 17, 2019. Applicants should have a strong background with horses, some knowledge of cattle work, be comfortable riding young horses, and have prior experience wrangling or giving riding lessons. The primary traits we look for are: a people-person, outgoing, quiet self confidence, energetic and good at getting along with people from all sorts of backgrounds, and someone with common sense and aware of other people and surroundings. This is a customer service business and our staff plays a vital role with guests. You need to be a great team player, but also be able to take the initiative and think on your feet.
Our riding program is incredibly varied, with 4-5 different ride options daily, including morning/afternoon rides, lessons, short all days, long all days, packtrips, cattle work, as well as occasional dinner rides or sunrise rides. We take special rides, such as fishing rides, swimming and bareback rides. A wrangler should be able to pack a horse, too and be comfortable camping out and cooking over a campfire.
Wranglers work 6 days a week and have one day off each week. In addition to leading rides and taking care of the horses and tack, wranglers should expect to help with cattle, drive a ranch vehicle, do fencing, salting cattle, doctoring horses, light construction, building fence, chopping wood, weed spraying, cook for guests on a camptrip, or accompany guests hiking or fishing.
We are fortunate that many of our guests are referred by word of mouth and we have a lot of repeat guests. The guests are the reason that we are in this business! Sweet Grass Ranch is 40 miles from town, and we look for crew members that are good-natured, love this way of life, and want guests to have a fantastic summer along with our crew. Wranglers are expected to have current first aid and CPR certifications.
Room and board, monthly salary and share of the tip pool. Salary depends on experience so the listed salary is a starting salary. If interested, please send a cover letter, resume and 3 references of people for whom you have worked recently.
