SECC empowering young adults to cultivate compassion, responsibility, and grit through community service, hard work, and environmental stewardship.

The Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC) is a non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization. The SECC selects young adults, ages 16-35, to complete conservation work projects on public lands throughout the Southeast. SECC programs encourage environmental stewardship, foster community partnerships, and emphasize experiential learning. The majority of SECC’s programs are camping model programs, with crews camping in either front-country or back-country settings for 4 day -10 day periods; schedules may vary by program and region. SECC serves a diverse population that is representative of the Southeast; including youth, graduates, veterans, and a cross-section of ethnicities and income levels. SECC has also taken on a role as a part of the larger AmeriCorps Disaster Response Team, and as such, some crews may get deployed on Disaster response projects for up to 30 days. 

Position Summary:

Southeast Conservation Corps’ Crew Leaders and Assistant Crew Leaders perform many roles and are the key to our program’s success. The position is multi-faceted and demanding, but with opportunity for enormous rewards. Successful candidates will demonstrate resourcefulness, effective communication skills, excellent judgment, maturity, initiative, professionalism, and the desire to devote themselves to a crew experience where the needs of others are placed above oneself. A leadership position with SECC requires mentorship, self-reliance, critical thinking, problem-solving, patience, technical aptitude, focus on efficiency, and a high level of comfort in the outdoors. Crew Leaders and Assistant Crew Leaders are ultimately responsible for successes and short-comings of the crew.

Applicants for this position may be considered for either Crew Leader or Assistant Crew Leader, depending on experience and qualifications.

The crews will complete conservation work projects on public lands throughout the Greater Chattanooga Area and the Southeast US. The schedule for this crew will include both local “day crew” weeks and camping hitches. The local “day crew” weeks will be either five eight-hour days with two days off or four ten-hour days with three days off, with members not camping at the project site but returning to their homes each night. The camping weeks are called hitches, hitches will typically be nine days long with members camping at the project location, and five days off post hitch.  We have crews that will be camping based on hitch schedules and local based on M-T schedules. 

Leaders are responsible for finding and attaining their own housing during off days throughout the season, this is a non-residential program.  Depending on project work and location other schedule variations may be implemented. Community/camp chores will be completed every evening, with some evenings including group discussions on conservation and/or corps related topics. While the staff at SECC works to provide consistency throughout the season personal flexibility is expected and should be prepared for when entering the term as schedules, times, and work locations are subject to change per project needs. The first week will be a five-day camping based, crew leader training week; followed by another five-day camping based crew member training week.

The backcountry Crew will receive cross-cut certifications and should be able to hike 3 miles per hours and up to 10 miles per day. The youth crews work M-F.

Required Skills:

 Leadership & Mentorship

  • Manage, supervise, and lead the day-to-day details of project work.
  • Implement skills training on work-site and facilitate intentional discussions via informal lessons to contribute to the crew’s personal growth and group dynamics
  • Promote individual corps member development and a healthy community
  • Mentor Assistant Crew Leader while delegating project responsibilities, overseeing crew life, and member development to them.
  • Must be willing to follow and enforce all SECC policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent Southeast Conservation Corps. This includes creating a substance-free work environment, refraining from the use of tobacco products, alcohol, and drugs while involved in the program.

Project Management & Implementation

  • Train and motivate a crew of six to eight young adults to efficiently complete conservation projects on public lands
  • Delegation of project work & investment among assistant crew leader and crew
  • Manage the on-the-ground quality and quantity of project work
  • Think critically to resolve issues and solve problems
  • Communicate effectively & coordinate logistics with project partners, assistant crew leader, & SECC staff

 Safety & Risk Management

  • Monitor, manage, and promote the crew’s physical and emotional safety on and off the work site
  • Exhibit strong situational awareness & promote a culture of safety
  • Transport crew and equipment safely in SECC’s vans or large vehicles with trailers


  • Complete professional documentation of time sheets, daily and weekly reports, corps member and peer evaluations, disciplinary action forms, incident reports, etc.
  • Responsible for all project related outcomes and deliverables.
  • Manage food budget and credit card for purchases

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Willingness to commit fully to the program and its mission.
  • Leadership experience with youth or young adults.
  • Excellent organizational & communication skills
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to work independently as well as with others
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently manage all aspects of crew life and production within a 40-50-hour work week.
  • Flexibility, adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment
  • Willingness to learn and be a part of a dynamic community of peer leaders.
  • Must be adaptive, patient and able to maintain a positive perspective throughout.
  • Technical trail construction and maintenance experience
  • Physically fit and able to work long days in adverse conditions
  • Experience with backpacking, wilderness living and travel, LNT principles
  • High School diploma or GED certificate
  • Must hold current/relevant medical certification (WFA, WFR, WEMT) with CPR/AED
  • Must be 21, have a clean driving record (insurable by SECC) and a current driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SECC or other conservation corps or youth corps
  • Experience with experiential and/or environmental education
  • Facilitation and team-building experience with diverse groups of people
  • Desire to work on a variety of conservation-based projects. 
  • Strong conflict resolution skills
  • Willingness and/or experience in Disaster Response 
  • Chainsaw experience
  • Crosscut Saw experience
  • Relevant Bachelor’s Degree
  • Sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and desire to make a positive difference and promote leadership in others
