About Silver Gate General Store & Lodging

Silver Gate Lodging is a unique and remote business operating one mile outside the Northeast gate to Yellowstone National Park. Consisting of rental cabins, a historic lodge, and a general store our mission is to help our guests make memories that will last a lifetime. We provide a jumping off point to explore the park and our cabins are a home base for various outdoor adventures; we provide unique and comfortable lodging at an affordable price.

The Employee Experience

Nestled next to Yellowstone's Northeastern Gate in a glacially carved valley, Soda Butte Creek winding through town, we're located in the town of Silver Gate, Montana. It’s a bit of humanity in a sea of wilderness. Animals from bison to bear to fox to moose pass through our tiny mountain town almost as if it didn't exist. The best thing about this job is that you get to work in the mountains, right outside of Yellowstone National Park. If you love the outdoors (hiking, fishing, camping, wildlife watching, rock climbing) then this is the place for you!

On your days off all of Yellowstone and the Beartooth Mountains are your playground. Unknown to most, the Beartooth and Absaroka Mountains surrounding us, which lie outside the park, are amazingly epic, wild, and beckoning to be explored.

There is no cell phone service or internet in Silver Gate. However, three miles up the road in Cooke City, free high-speed internet is available 12 hours a day at the Cooke City Chamber of Commerce.

We look forward to sharing our slice of mountain paradise with you!

Ideal Candidate

We work hard and play hard! The ideal candidate is flexible and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, personally invested in the success of the organization, and has a positive "can-do" attitude.

We're all here due to our passion for the great outdoors and Yellowstone National Park! One of the most important characteristics we look for in our employees is a passion for the natural world and the belief that facilitating an exceptional experience in nature will help make the world a better place.

We live in close quarters and there's very little separation between work and home. When you're done working for the day you go home and see your co-workers. For this reason, it's very important employees be flexible, communicative, emotionally mature, community-oriented, and able to solve interpersonal problems.

Room and Board

Room and board is provided free of charge for employees, having a private room in a large Lodge with communal bathrooms and a large kitchen.

We provide transportation to Silver Gate and your home at the beginning of your work experience and back home at the end of your time here.

Employee Perks

  • Our team members receive 20% off at the Silver Gate General Store.
  • A free snack and drink during their shift.  Free coffee.
  • Free bear spray.
  • Weekly community dinners and activities.  Field trips into Yellowstone.
  • There is also a communal hang-out area with couches and TV/DVD, access to a wood-fired sauna,  employee bicycles and use of laundry facilities.

Getting Here and Getting Around

We highly recommend community members have their own transportation. We are in an isolated corner of Yellowstone and there is absolutely NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. We are more than willing to pick you up in Billings or Bozeman and bring you up to Silver Gate free of charge, but as the closest grocery store is 1 1/2 hours away, (and meals are not provided) it's important our potential community members are aware of the lack of transportation available.

We do have many communal bikes, they're in good shape and quality bikes, that community members are allowed to use free of charge.
