Sierra Nevada Journeys (SNJ) is an educational non-profit dedicated to building critical thinking skills through outdoor science education and leadership development challenges. Youth outdoor science trips, summer camps, and other renter-user groups enjoy our state of the art facility at the Grizzly Creek Ranch (GCR) Campus in Portola, CA. The campus is situated on 1,500 acres of pristine Yellow Pine forest. Built in 2003, Grizzly Creek Ranch offers excellent program resources, including a challenge course, hiking trails, archery range, and pond. During the summer season, SNJ delivers both residential summer camp programs and community programs for special needs and leadership development. SNJ’s traditional, week-long summer camp programs are designed with an educational and experiential focus for our resident campers, ages 8-17.

Instructors could be working two different types of programs throughout the summer at Sierra Nevada Journeys. First, they will work Summer Camp which includes supervising campers, sometimes overnight, as well as facilitating camp activities such as swimming, archery, challenge course, arts and crafts, large group games, and campfire skits. Second, instructors may work for our leadership development community groups. This typically involves utilizing our challenge course to facilitate leadership growth and develop collaborative problem-solving skills. Instructors are directly responsible for ensuring that attending campers’ educational outcomes are met and that all campers have a positive experience.

Counselors are mainly responsible for two duties during summer camp at Sierra Nevada Journeys. First, counselors will be directly responsible for providing a safe, educational experience to all our resident campers. This includes during all activity times, while supervising cabin groups, and assisting in general camp preparation. Secondly, counselors will facilitate (or assist Instructors as they facilitate) traditional camp activities, such as archery, swimming, kayaking, campfires, large camp games, or skits. Counselors will be responsible for supervising campers during all cabin times (both day and night) and at meal times.
