Spend the season living aboard one of Maine's premiere "windjammers." You will be part of a small team working hard to engage and serve guests in this trip back in time to a simpler way of life. No pings, dings, and rings here. As we say the way to truly recharge is to unplug from the world. Mary Day is a stunning historic two-masted schooner, a tallship, that offers our guests 3,4, and 6-day cruises along the Maine coast departing from the storybook harbor of Camden, where the mountains meet the sea.
Life aboard is simple, rustic, but at the same time with enough creature comforts to qualify as "glamping" (glamorous camping). Meals are baked from scratch, prepared lovingly in our wood-fired cookstove, and served against the most beautiful backdrop imaginable. Much of the Maine coast where we sail appears largely untouched. Rugged spruce-covered islands, abundant wildlife, remote harbors, star-studded night skies, and fresh salt air combine to create a rejuvenating vacation experience. The crew works seamlessly in the background to engage guests in the relaxed pace shipboard life.
The messmate is in charge of some food prep, set up, and clean up before and after meals and providing a pleasant dining atmosphere. When not engaged in the galley at mealtimes the messmate has the opportunity to learn about sailing, standing watch, furling sails, learning to be an effective member of the deck crew. This is a great entry-level introduction to the world of tallship sailing.
