Great Camp Sagamore is one of the pioneering historic preservation efforts in the United States. Our National Historic Landmark property was built by William West Durant, one of the innovators of the Adirondack style of architecture. Set on the edge of a Sagamore Lake and surrounded by thousands of acres of designated wilderness, the 28 building complex was once the hunting lodge of the Vanderbilt family and is now a non-profit educational institution. We offer overnight and day educational programs, historic tours, workshops, and family events from Memorial Day through mid-October. Most of our guests are adults.
Working at Great Camp Sagamore
We're seeking a vibrant, customer-oriented person to assist the Operations and Event Director with day to day interactions with registered guests, staff, and visitors, and with the planning and execution of events. This person is integral to guest satisfaction, successful events, and the smooth operations of camp. This position provides ongoing contact with our guests and patrons, records reservation data, processes payments, and assists with financial reports. Event assistance involves the planning and execution of private events such as weddings and reunions, and our annual gala, which is Great Camp Sagamore’s annual benefit and largest fundraiser of the year.
This is a full-time, seasonal, non-exempt, hourly position that runs from mid-May through mid-October. The standard work schedule is eight hours per day, five days per week. Employees will have two days off per week to pursue their own interests and enjoy the Adirondacks. Compensation includes room and board in our historic rooms and full use of the recreational facilities. Our camp is a community where all residents assist with maintaining the neatness and cleanliness of facility grounds and buildings as well as assisting with the setup, serving, and cleanup of meals.
A hospitality college degree and/or previous experience in the hospitality industry is preferred but not required. Recent graduates, retirees, and everyone in-between are encouraged to apply.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Evaluate guest needs and provide appropriate services
- Greet guests, answer telephones, and provide directions and information
- Operate various equipment and computer systems as required
- Communicate rates, secure reservations, receive and record deposits and payments
- Assist with general office support
- May post payments and charges daily and balance cash drawer daily
- Create appropriate notes in individual reservations to ensure consistent communication within departments
- Assist with event planning and execution
