Roche Harbor Utilities is seeking a mechanically minded Utility Worker for our water, wastewater, and propane systems.  Once trained, the operator will be responsible for all aspects of the wastewater treatment plant, collection system operation and maintenance, and water distribution operation and maintenance and propane distribution system. Trainees will work under the supervision of the water, wastewater, and propane lead operator.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and carry out the work in the maintenance and operation of a wastewater treatment plant, water treatment plant, Propane Plant, and associated collection/distribution systems.
  • Obtain samples according to established procedures; perform standard laboratory tests; solve problems using standard chemical formulas and algebra.
  • Hose, wash, or clean all plant equipment pumps, motors, floors, and walls on a regular schedule to maintain established sanitary standards.
  • Maintain daily operating records, note equipment performance, chemicals and supplies used. Read and interpret meters, gauges, and graphs. take action as necessary in the event of malfunction or failure of equipment.
  • Operates all plant mechanical and electrical equipment; contract emergency repairs as necessary; inspect and maintain equipment in sewer pumping stations and manholes.
  • Inform plant operator and supervisor of any needed alterations, extensions and improvements to the plant, equipment, and processes.
  • Reports to plant operator and supervisor.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Work for other departments as directed.

Requirements of Work

  • Ability to work effectively alone or in a team.
  • Ability to meet training and testing requirements. 
    • Acquire Operator certification within 1 year.
    • Acquire Washington Flagger Card
  • Ability to determine from charts, graphs, and meters the cause of equipment or process failures and the necessary source of action to correct such cause.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective public and work relations.
  • Dedication to accurately maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Skill in the mechanical repair of a variety of plant equipment.
  • Basic understanding of Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Previous plumbing and electrical experience a plus.
  • Current Driver’s License a must.

The physical demands and characteristics of the work environment described here are representative of those occurring in the performance of the essential functions of this job.  While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, kneel, bend, or climb and to use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and communicate with co-workers.  The employee will lift 25-50 pounds on a frequent basis, and lift or move between 50-100 pounds with assistance and or equiptment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

This position regularly works outside in various weather conditions.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to vibration.  The employee may be exposed to physical hazards from mechanical and electrical equipment and will sometimes work in hazardous conditions.  The employee occasionally works in traffic, near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock and radiation.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

This position works a regular schedule; adjusted seasonally. Employees may be called in to work at irregular times in emergency situations, and employees must be available for call-out and standby duty as needed.  Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.

Wages:  

$24.00 Depending on experience.
