Premier summer camp on a world class sailing lake at 7,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada
Camp Oljato (Ol-JAY–toe), founded in 1941, is located in the High Sierra on the shores of Huntington Lake. From the moment of arrival to the last day of camp, participants are immersed in outdoor adventure including aquatics, nature, crafts, shooting sports, rock climbing, and more!
Huntington Lake sits at 10,000 feet about an hour and half's drive east of Fresno, CA. One of California's premier sailing lakes, sailors from all over the world gather for various regattas throughout the summer. Hiking trails through the Kaiser Wilderness are also a popular draw to the area.
About Camp Oljato
Camp Oljato offers programming in swimming, boating, sailing, nature, crafts, shooting sports, rock climbing, and more! The camp boasts many program buildings built in the last 10-years, full-dining service, great views, and an unbeatable program. We are looking for enthusiastic people committed to providing mountaintop experiences to youth ages 11-18
The Employee Experience
Serving on the staff of Camp Oljato means joining a team committed to delivering outdoor adventures that last a lifetime to hundreds of youth. It offers opportunities for challenging and rewarding work, personal development experiences, unique friendships, and lifelong memories.
Everything at Camp Oljato begins with a quality staff. We believe that staff members' attitude, example, and performance set the pace for our campers and have lifelong impact on them.
We seek staff that have a great attitude, take initiative, and are excited to help us provide every camper with the maximum opportunity for physical, mental, and spiritual highs.
Our most successful staff are those that are willing to work hard and in a cheerful manner; those that contribute their constructive ideas to providing a great program and take ownership of their tasks and/or area. We believe that a camp staff is a large team and all players are integral to the success of our program, so we seek staff that enjoy working with others and have excellent communication skills.
Room and Board
Room and board is provided for all seasonal camp positions.
Most staff are housed in 10'x12' canvas platform tents with cots. We typically house two people in each tent. All toilets in camp are flush toilets and the staff have a latrine/shower house that is separate from the campers. It is shared among all staff and so is the responsibility for keeping it clean. The shower rooms and bathrooms are all single occupancy with locking doors. Laundry facilities are also provided.
All employees receive two t-shirts, a hat, and a jacket all camp branded. Additionally, employees will enjoy access to camp equipment during down time with proper approval. Discounts on some merchandise are available in the camp store (Trading Post).
We believe that the camp staff is the most important part of providing a great experience for our campers and as such are very interested in our staff having a positive experience. Throughout the summer there may be additional staff recognition items, treats, and etc. Typically, there will be a staff gathering of some sort each week.
All staff receive a 24-hour off period from late Saturday morning to early Sunday morning. During this time staff will often go hiking in the Kaiser Wilderness, play on Huntington Lake, go across the lake for ice cream or dinner, go to Fresno to see a movie, and various other activities.
Getting Here and Getting Around
Staff are encouraged to drive themselves to camp, carpool, or have a friend or family member drop them off. Staff are responsible for getting themselves to camp, but we are happy to help coordinate carpools and etc. Fresno, CA is served by Greyhound buses, Amtrak train, and an airport.
You will be asked to coordinate your arrival to camp with the camp director. Though campers come into camp via boat, we have a staff parking area located off of Hwy 168 with a fire road and hiking trail into camp itself. Other than a few company vehicles, we do not allow vehicles past the parking area though so we will provide vehicles for shuttling your gear into camp on move-in day and shuttling it back out at the end of the summer.
The camp itself is a fairly compact area. All parts of camp are easily walked to from all other parts. The only caveat to that is that the shooting sports area and staff parking area are up the hill from the main camp. It is a fairly steep climb of around 500 feet.
During your downtime, and perhaps as part of your job function, you will have the opportunity to truly enjoy the Huntington Lake basin.
The lake itself is beautiful and perfect for sailing, canoeing, water skiing, and just plain swimming around. Miles of hiking trails exist as well as great natural rock climbing. We are far from city lights and rarely have clouds over the summer, so the stargazing is amazing. One of our most popular camper programs is in fact the star float.
Near bike China Peak ski resort has mountain bikes available for rent on your off-time. Just down the hill on Shaver Lake you can rent jet skis.
