Outback Therapeutic Expeditions is a wilderness therapy program that helps struggling teens overcome life's difficulties. We empower our students through activities including hiking, primitive skills, paddle boarding, sand boards, repelling, caving, equine work. We focus on an agentive model that helps our Field Staff invite our students to create healthy relationships with family and friends.

Our office is located in Lehi, Utah. Our field is located in the rustic and beautiful West Desert.

Outback is looking for passionate and dynamic people from all walks of life to inspire their students. Wilderness Guides empower adolescents by focusing on their self-esteem, team building, and positive decision-making skills. You will act as mentors in building relationships of trust in Adventure activities like paddle boarding, sand boards, rock climbing, repelling, caving and equine work as well as be teachers of primitive and survival skills.

It is emotionally, physically, and mentally challenging—and will probably become the most memorable and most fulfilling job you'll ever have. Outback staff receives training in primitive skills such as making wood-framed primitive backpacks, primitive musical instruments, leather working, friction bow drill fires, shelter building and Leave No Trace outdoor ethics. As well as Adventure activities like paddle boarding, sand boards, repelling, caving and equine work.

Room and Board

Wilderness Field staff are responsible for their own housing during their 6 days off. While in the field during the 8-day rotation, you will be in the field night and day while Outback provides food and transportation. 

Employee Perks

We offer a weeklong paid training that includes an experiential camping experience in the field to see what your day to day will look like. We will train you how to camp, hike, and do primitive skills, as well as prepare you with safety training and communication skills to work with the students.  

We offer medical, vision, and dental benefits after 30 days and 401k after 60 days.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Wilderness Field staff are responsible for making it to the Field House in Lehi, Utah. Once there, we use company vehicles to drive to and from the field. 

Utah has public transportation available and for those flying into Salt Lake City, there is a shuttle from the airport to the Field House. 

For Fun

Utah is an amazing place to experience many different elements of nature from the mountains to the desert lands. Only a half-hour drive takes you to the mountains for hiking, fishing, rock climbing, river rafting, and exploring what nature has to offer in the summertime with some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the winter. Salt Lake City is full of unexpected surprises and brims with history, art, culture, entertainment, and recreation - all in a beautiful location at the foot of Utah's Wasatch Mountains. Salt Lake combines the amenities of a large metro area with the opportunity to take advantage of year-round outdoor recreation within minutes in every direction.
