Store Attendant and Ferry Driver
The Florence Lake Store is part of Muir Trail Ranch and provides ferry rides across the lake for ranch guests as well as people hiking the John Muir Trail. Flexibility is very important with all of the positions offered. A valid Drivers License and clean driving record is required. The Florence Lake Store sells a variety of goods to campers and hikers.
Duties Include:
Retail -
- Customer service skills
- Opening and closing the store daily
- Retail sales of store items, stocking and ordering
- Maintaining a clean and well organized store
- Cash and credit card handling
- Signing in people for the Ferry
- Driving the Ferry across the lake and back for three runs a day and sometimes extra runs.
- Picking up supplies in town, which may require overnight stays in Fresno
- Maintaining a clean and eye appealing store front and grounds
- Receiving hiker food cache buckets and stocking them by date for ease of distribution
- Loading and unloading the ranch boat
Driver/Maintenance
The driver is responsible for transporting goods to and from MTR to Florence Lake. The truck is used for hauling supplies into and out of the ranch. It is also used for transporting guest luggage. We do not transport guests, just their luggage for their stay.
A good general mechanic knowledge is very important in this position. Being able to assess mechanical issues with the Unimog trucks, one gas and one diesel is key. The road into the ranch is 4WD and the trip takes approximately three hours either way. You will be responsible for loading and unloading the truck and transporting the items safely.
All jobs at MTR require a certain amount of physical fitness to accomplish and this is no exception.
Maintenance/Mechanic
Experienced required, this person will require a good sense of handling everyday fixes in regard to the Ranch infrastructure. When things break which they do in an old place, we need to get them fixed!
A good all around general knowledge of building, plumbing and electrical as well as general vehicle maintenance is a big plus.
Cook Helper
Cook Helper is to assist the AM and PM cooks with any preparation needs, set up, and dishes. This person will also assist with closing cleaning duties, stocking, and rotation. Knife-handling skills are a plus but not required.
Wage will depend on experience and abilities.
Ranch Cook AM/PM
* Experience Required in a professional kitchen either as a line cook or commercial/camp cook.
MTR has a fixed rotating menu for Breakfast and Dinner. Lunch is a sack lunch that is prepared by the guest with the items we put out for the guest. Breakfast is prepared daily and served at 7am. Dinner is prepared nightly and served at 6:30pm. The menu is one item service. You will receive a guest count daily from the bucket house however, preparing for a full camp during the season is the safest bet. A full camp is 40 people - this includes the staff, sometimes this varies slightly.
Both shifts should be trained in both menus in case a rotation is necessary and all kitchen personnel are responsible for receiving items and rotating stock daily. All kitchen personnel are responsible for keeping the kitchen and dining room clean. This includes the outside areas be free of boxes and trash bags.
Prepare meals daily:
AM: Breakfast is responsible for executing breakfast starting at 5am. This shift will run from 5am - 1pm allowing time for helping with dinner prep as well as the next days breakfast prep that must occur to keep the kitchen running smoothly and timely.
PM: Dinner is responsible for executing dinner starting at 2pm and is responsible for preparing the menu items fresh and ready by 6:30pm.
Execute your duties in a timely and calm manner. Professionalism and ability to handle the job in a productive and efficient manner is very important.
Keep the kitchen clean for your shift this means: cleaning dishes and silverware, cleaning surfaces according to proper food handling practices, sweeping, mopping and general organization in the kitchen.
Proper food storage and rotation daily. Make note of items needed for the Kitchen Manager.
This is an open kitchen where guests and other employees can hear you converse so candidate must be professional and aware of their surroundings. Cooks will cook and serve the meal.
Hiker Resupply Attendant/Housekeeper
Receive hiker buckets off the transportation truck.
Log the buckets in the system and hand them to the guest upon their arrival.
Answer emails from hikers who have questions about their bucket availability.
Stock the hiker store with supplies.
Keep the bucket house inside and out clean, organized, and well stocked.
Interact with the hikers; selling products, handing out buckets, checking in guests to cabins.
Cleaning: Cabin cleaning, communal bathrooms, hot baths, laundry for cabins, making beds and general housekeeping responsibilities.
Help with any outdoor beautification such as watering plants, raking pine needles and picking up any trash.
Maintaining a high standard of cleaning and guest services. Communication is key in any working environment. Please be willing and able to work with coworkers on what needs to be done for the best possible guest experience.
