Looking for a job where you can serve a higher purpose while utilizing your culinary skills in a beautiful mountain oasis? Menla is the place for you. We are a 115-bed retreat center in the heart of the Catskill mountains. Surrounded by nature, the Menla kitchen serves three meals a day to our retreat guests. We aim to use as much organic, health-focused food to feed all of our participants and staff. The kitchen is a fast-paced, fun environment open to creative types who really care about food, healthy living and customer service.
The Line Cook should be a mature person with experience in the preparation of meals for large groups. S/he should have versatile cooking skills ideally with experience in both culinary and pastry. Experience with vegetarian and vegan cooking is a plus but not required. The ability to accurately follow recipes is essential. The Lead Line Cook should have organizational, time-management and supervisory skills in order to assume responsibility for timely and proper meal preparation in the absence of the Executive Chef or Sous Chef. This includes managing the additional kitchen staff during these times.
During your downtime, enjoy hiking, yoga, meditation, lounging by the pool, or just relax with your fellow coworkers in employee housing. This position includes housing in our modest but comfortable staff housing. Employees will be housed in single rooms with shared common spaces (bathroom, living room, kitchen) All rooms come fully furnished and Menla is happy to provide any furnishing that may make you more comfortable (within reason). Our staff is truly supportive of one another both on an off the clock. Whether it be dining together during our complimentary shift meal or getting together for staff classes to further discuss different works about buddhism, we try to cultivate a culture of care, understanding, compassion and love.
